10 PS7220 Psychology & the Courts 14 Seminars 4 10 Guided Independent Study 122 Period: Spring Term Emma Palmer 001 Oral presentation (pass/fail formative) Psychological report (final) 100 On completion of this module students should be able to: 1. rticulate verbally and in writing key issues in the domain of psychology and the courts: impact of suggestibility, compliance and acquiescence; stress in jurors; victims of sexual offending in the court system; models of memory for everyday events and eyewitness reliabilty; theory and research in juror decisionmaking; the status of psychological evidence in the criminal justice system; 'Courtcraft' the art of giving high utility evidence in court. 2. Demonstrate learning of (i) reallife court room evaluations of all the roles of people therein and (ii) the provision of a psychological report for advising the court or parole board. Interactive lectures, seminars, practical work in the courts and private study. Oral presentations of feedback of courtroom evaulations and a written psychological court report of 3,000 words. The students will prepare a report on an offender. They will be provided with a fictional case overview. They will then via Blackboard be able to ask the offender questions in open forum, with the offender being played by the module coordinator. On the basis of the overview and the information gained in the group interviewing, students will be required to individually and independently produce their court report. PreRequisites CoRequisites
