Inhalation studies in experimental animals at doses in excess of the PEL for crystalline silica have resulted in lung tumors. Other routes of administration(intrapleural, intrathoracic) have also resulted in the formation of tumors (lymphoid tumors, adenocarcinomas). Crystalline silica is listed on the NTP and listed as carcinogenic to humans by IARC (Group 1) Silicon carbide dust may cause mild irritation of upper respiratory tract on acute overexposure. Chronic

2 overexposure to particulates of respirable size may cause lung inflammation, difficult breathing, chest pain coughing, and pneumoconiosis or possible fibrotic changes in the lungs. Dust containing carbon can cause eye, mucous membrane, and upper respiratory tract irritation. Overexposure to dust containing carbon can cause scarring of the lungs. Chronic exposure to inert dusts of silicon can cause increased airways resistance and contribute to chronic bronchitis. Intratracheal administration of silicon in rabbits produced significant pulmonary lesions. High exposures to iron oxide dust or fume can cause x-ray changes (siderosis or iron pigmentation) in the lungs as a result of long-term exposure. Siderosis is a benign condition and is not associated with pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lung). Ingestion of high levels of iron oxide can cause gastrointestinal irritation, bleeding and systematic toxicity. Aluminium dust/fines and fumes are a low risk by inhalation and should be treated as a nuisance dust as specified by the ACGIH.
