Anaesthetists throughout Canada may be well assu~ed that Dr. Vandam s v~slt will have done much to demonstrate how widely the interests and responsibilities of the physician anaesthetist now reach. Dr. Robert R. Boright has joined Drs. Robert Ferguson, J. J. Kelly and Associates in their practice at the Montreal General Hospital. Dr. Boright is a 1944 graduate in Medicine from McGill, and was formerly in general practice. He is certified in Anaesthesia by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Quebec and The Royal College of Physicians and gurgeons of Canada. The Standing Committee on Economics of the Quebec Division has been active in seeking the establishment of an independent i~rocedural tariff for the p oro - fessional fees of anaesthetists in the Province. A~ the'time of writing active negotiations are being conducted with a yiew to early amendment of the bjasis of the original tariff. The Committee's submission has been that the modern anaesthetic procedure basically includes not only the administration of (and continuous supervi~_ion during) an anaesthetic, by any tecl~nique, but also a pre-anaesthetic consultation, supportive therapy during the operation, and professional care in the immediate post-operative (recovery room) phase. With this in mind the Committee has cofne to the realization that the.t~aditional hourly basis for the fees of anaesthetists is no longer suitable, nor l~any tariff which seeks to fix the value of the anaesthe!tist's services in an unchanging ratio to a schedule of allowances for surgical operations. t is suggested that only a tariff of an indeper~dent procedural type rejects sufficiently accurately the value of the 'anaesthetist's professional services, having in mind the nature of the anaesthetic procedure as ano ~independent medical] act.
