MEMBER HANDBOOK / STATE EMPLOYEES / PAGE 3
5 AFT- is also an active participant in the organized labor movement through its affiliation with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). Affiliation with the AFL-CIO gives your local union voting power on regional labor councils through local union-designated delegates. Sending a delegate to these labor councils provides your local union the chance to be represented in the labor community and the ability to collaborate on key universal issues such as healthcare and privatization. ABOUT Unions come together under the AFL-CIO to pool resources and fight the battles collectively that we cannot win alone. Delegates from each of the unions come together annually at the AFL-CIO convention to set broad policies and goals for the union movement, and officers are elected every four years. At the state level, the AFL-CIO coordinates with local unions through political and legislative activity. The state federations are led by officers and boards elected by delegates from local unions. At the local level, the AFL-CIO has chartered central labor councils which focus on more local issues for workers. Dues Dues are deducted from members paychecks and routed through their local union to pay local, AFT-, American Federation of Teachers, local labor council and AFL-CIO dues. Each local union determines its own dues structure. The AFT- delegate assembly and the AFT conventions set AFT- and AFT dues respectively by a vote of all delegates. AFT- dues money is NOT spent on political candidates see pages 8, 17 and 19 for a more, in-depth explanation of dues. Legal Team AFT- professional staff representatives work exclusively with the law firm of Hawks Quindel Ehlke & Perry, S.C., a legal team of 21 attorneys with 40 years of commitment almost exclusively to the labor movement, and proven experience up to and including the Court of Appeals and the State Supreme Court. Members of AFT- receive discounted rates on personal legal services. Staff AFT- employs staff throughout to carry out the union s programs and to assist local unions and members. Each local union is assigned a full-time staff person known as a staff representative. Some locals may also work with a staff organizer, who helps your local develop structure and recruit members. AFT- also employs staff with expertise in the area of government relations, public relations and political organizing who work with all local unions to facilitate communication between members and policymakers, legislators and the media.
