Downtown Street Trees Grant Workshop 23 June 2008
Why Street Trees? The usual justification - positive environmental impact; - Reduction of heat island effect - Carbon sequestration - Extended service life for pavement - Reduced costs for interior heating and cooling New York City New understanding Trees are a major competitive advantage; - Dr. Kathleen Wolf, UW College of Forest Resources, 2007: - The Environmental Psychology of Shopping ICSC Research Review, Vol. 14, No. 3, 2007 pp39-43
Canopy loss in major metropolitan areas: Washington DC 1973 and 1997 Seattle 1972 and 1996 Atlanta 1974 and 1996 Source: American Forests Council
Monetary value of street trees: Homes value increased by 10 23% Value assessed and captured in property tax. Place making and life-style centers. Research by Dr. Kathleen Wolf, UW CFR*: 1. Customer approval of wide range of shopping experiences improves with presence of trees. 2. Perceptions of shoppers shaped by trees even before entering a store. Riverwalk, San Antonio 3. Highest preference for trees with largest canopy. 4. Care and maintenance of street trees and customer service. 5. Increased trade radius for well-treed retail districts. 6. Shoppers stay longer; increased store revenue. 7. Issue of pay-parking mitigated by street trees. University Village, Seattle *Wolf, K. The Environmental Psychology of Shopping ICSC Research Review, Vol. 14, No. 3, 2007 pp39-43
How the grant works: Grant application filled out. BOTTOM LINE Urban forester surveys tree site. Property owner is granted obstruction permit or hires certified arborist. Dead tree and root system removed. - City irrigation system capped Watering system installed. Parks dept. places soil mix in tree well. SCCD installs new tree and topsoil. Final inspection by urban forester. PW Dept notified of project completion and check mailed. The Expo 74 irrigation system is non-functional. The tree grant program insures that downtown s trees are reliably irrigated.
Tree Grates Are tree grates needed? NO Tree grates are an unnecessary expense. Tree grates often cause tree girdling. An open tree well allows for the tree to be mulched. IF YOU HAVE AN UNUSED METAL GRATE Replace a concrete grate -OR- Allow DSP to replace a concrete grate elsewhere.
Tree Maintenance Ensure your investment pays off! Trees are a long-term investment that pay dividends years after planting. Downtown is a difficult environment for trees. The City is only responsible for removing hazard trees. Seriously consider hiring a certified arborist to maintain your trees. The following tree service companies are ISA certified: Aardvark Tree Service Affordable Arborist Tree Care ArborCare arborcarespokane.com Baker Tree Service bakertree@gmail.com Frontier Tree Service Grace Tree Service tmk@jrcda.com Greenleaf Landscaping admin@greenleafwa.com Inland Tree Service inlandtree@aol.com McElfish Tree Specialists treespecialists@msn.com NW Plant Health Care nphc@icehouse.net Selkirk Landscape Services Inc selkirk@icehouse.net Senske Lawn & Tree Care bheywood@senske.com Tall Tree Service Treecraft Arboreal Arts
Tree irrigation The general rule of thumb for small (1-3 ) and medium size (4-8 ) trees is:* 10 gal/water per inch of trunk Frequency of watering: Small trees Weekly Medium Trees Three times/month Large trees (10 +) Twice monthly at 15 gal/in. The following companies provide tree irrigation services: Clear Water Summit - (509) Dewdrop - (509) Auto Rain Spokane (509) Riverwalk, San Antonio *Arrange appropriate watering frequency and volume with your irrigation contractor.
Subsurface Electrical and tree lighting
Conclusion Trees are a dynamic design element Increased visual interest Customer service levels and tree maintenance Sense of place The urban forest is an important part of the vibrant, satisfying places that shoppers enjoy. THANK YOU!!!! for your interest in downtown trees. Downtown Boise
