3 Project Objectives Project Objectives Benchmark Employee Health & Safety metrics within the North American natural gas pipeline industry to facilitate the efficient construction and safe operation of the system through: Assessing pipeline employee construction safety statistics at the INGAA Foundation member companies for 2008, 2009 and 2010, and collecting a wide & complete database through an online survey Comparing the safety statistics across segments of facilities (as indicated by the primary six digit NAICS code) Comparing safety statistics of individual (anonymous) contractors with the safety statistics of owner s Contractor Safety Programs. 3
4 Survey Methodology Web-based surveys developed by the INGAA Foundation & UH research team - Total of 149 surveys sent out - Survey open from 15 November -15 December 2011 Total of 8 items about safety statistics Survey content: - Exposure hours - OSHA recordables - Lost time cases - Total Recordable Incident Rate - Lost Time Incident Rate - Experience Modification Rate * Online survey shown above Among the 149 member companies invited to participate in the survey, a total of 35 responded (some incomplete/missing data though)

6 Safety Metrics Definitions Exposure Hours Total number of man-hours worked for that year TRIR Total Recordable Incident Rate Formula: # incidents x 200,000/hours worked=trir LTIR Lost Time Incident Rate Formula: # lost time cases x 200,000/hours worked=ltir EMR Experience Modification Rate Experience Modification Rating compares a company s workers compensation claims experience to other companies similar in size who operate in the same industry. Most employers who have annual premiums in excess of $3,000 receive an Experience Modification Rate 6

14 Summary of Findings Overall, safety practices at the INGAA Foundation member companies participating in the survey have improved slightly from 2008 to 2010 Member companies in the Construction Contractors and Owners segments generally had higher TRIR relative to Service Provider companies Construction Contractors also had higher LTIR relative to Owners and Service Providers EMRs for Construction Contractors varied between 0.5 to 1 Statistics were based on limited sample size and therefore should be interpreted with caution 14
