2 Kellogg (5.4 ppg, 3.3 apg), junior Hilton Armstrong (3.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and junior forward Ed Nelson (3.1, 3.0) round out the regulars. A SEASON (AND GAME) FOR GIVING-- Sophomore Marcus Williams recorded 16 assists in the win over Central Connecticut, setting a UConn single game record in the process. The previous record of 14 had been achieved three times, by Kevin Ollie (twice, in 1995 and 1993) and by Earl Kelley (in 1985). Williams, who leads the BIG EAST in assists per game at 7.7, had ten assists by halftime and set the mark when he assisted Rudy Gay on a dunk with 11:35 left to play in the game. Marcus had a previous best of 13 assists, achieved November 22, 2003 in a win over Sacred Heart. BOONE DOUBLES UP-- Sophomore Josh Boone is averaging 16.4 points and 11.1 rebounds for the year, adding 3.6 blocks per game as well. He comes off back-to-back 20 point games in the wins over Rice and Central Connecticut, throwing in 14 and 11 boards, respectively. Boone s five double-doubles in already surpass his season total of three as a freshman in Boone averaged 5.9 points and 5.8 rebounds a year ago. RASHAD NEARS Junior Rashad Anderson has 826 career points and is nearing the 900-point plateau for his Husky career. Anderson, who is averaging 16.6 points per game, is on pace to become the 38th UConn player to crack the 1,000-point barrier, sometime near the end of January or beginning of February. 55 STRAIGHT VS. IN-STATE FOES-- UConn enters the game with Sacred Heart having won 55 consecutive games against opponents from the Nutmeg State. The last loss to an in-state foe for the Huskies came in Jim Calhoun s first season, a loss to Hartford on December 29, 1986 at the Hartford Civic Center. Coach Calhoun is 71-5 all-time against teams from the state of Connecticut (57-2 at UConn, 14-3 at Northeastern). THE HUSKIES IN HARTFORD-- UConn will play in the Hartford Civic Center for the 250th time in the game vs. Sacred Heart, including exhibition games. The Huskies have rolled up a mark vs. collegiate opposition, including exhibitions. UConn has gone unbeaten at the HCC five times and has had five seasons with only one HCC loss. The Huskies topped the three million mark in attendance in Hartford during the season. The total attendance for HCC games is 3,584,601, an average of 14,396 per date, including 111 sellouts. UConn is in the Hartford Civic Center under Jim Calhoun... The Huskies are at the HCC in BIG EAST play, against nonconference opponents... This is the fourth of ten regular season contests at the HCC this season for UConn, with the Huskies defeating Indiana on December 4, Rice on December 19 and Central Connecticut on December 22 in its three regular season contests in the HCC so far. VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES-- UConn is against non-conference opponents under Jim Calhoun. NOVEMBER & DECEMBER ARE MONTHS REMEMBER-- The Jim Calhoun era has been the winningest in the history of UConn basketball and a closer look at the early season successes in nonconference play make that tradition of excellence easier to see. Under Coach Calhoun, UConn has compiled a record in November and December against non-conference foes. Broken down even further, the Huskies are at home in November and December against non-league opponents (including 69-3 at the HCC and 32-0 at Gampel Pavilion). Connecticut has won 102 of its last 103 home games before the New Year against non-league competition, 68-1 in games at the Civic Center. The only home non-league loss in the past 17 months of November and December came on December 28, 2001 to St. Bonaventure at the HCC, EMEKA WHO?-- With the graduation of all-time shot block leader Emeka Okafor, the expectation could have been for the Huskies, who have led the nation in blocked shots as a team for three straight seasons, to fall off the pace a bit. After seven games in , that thought might prove to be a bit misguided. UConn has blocked 78 shots (11.1 per game), including a school-record 19 shots in the win over Florida International on November 30. UConn is the first school in NCAA history to lead the country in blocked shots for three straight seasons and could be on its way to a repeat. The wealth is spread out too, with ten different players recording at least one block so far. Sophomores Josh Boone (24) and Charlie Villanueva (14), freshman Rudy Gay (13) and junior Hilton Armstrong (12) have led the block party to this point. PLENTY OF WINS-- Since the start of the season, the Connecticut basketball program has averaged 27.6 victories per season. In that span, UConn has won 200 games and lost only 53, a superb winning percentage of 79.1%. REBOUNDING RECORDS-- Husky rebounding marks are taking a beating so far this season, as UConn is out-rebounding opponents by 19.1 boards/game through seven contests. UConn grabbed 31 offensive rebounds in the win over Rice, surpassing the previous Jim Calhoun Era-best of 30 it had in the win over Northeastern. In the win over Northeastern. UConn had 74 total boards on the night, also a UConn best under coach Calhoun. The previous high for total rebounds by a Calhoun team was 72, vs. Central Connecticut on December 27, UConn had twice before grabbed 29 rebounds on offensive end, vs. Seton Hall on March 2, 1996 and vs. Southern Connecticut on December 23, UConn Basketball Roster # Name Yr. He will really benefit from a fifth year at nationally-renowned Brewster Academy under coach Jason Smith. ANDREW BYNUM 7-0, 295, Center Metuchen, NJ St. Joseph s HS A consensus Top 25 national recruit and the nation s top high school center... Averaged 14 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocks as a junior at St. Joseph s. The move toward national prominence for the University of Connecticut basketball program began in May of 1986 when Jim Calhoun was named head coach. Eighteen years later, UConn Basketball sits atop the college basketball landscape with a pair of NCAA National Championships, an NIT Championship, 14 BIG EAST Conference titles, and annual recognition as one of America's truly outstanding college programs. In February of 2004, Jim Calhoun was named one of 16 finalists for election in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Despite narrowly missing a rare first ballot election to the Basketball Hall of Fame, Coach Calhoun cemented his place among the all-time collegiate coaching greats and as a future member of the Hall of Fame by leading the Huskies to the 2004 national title. In directing the Huskies to their second NCAA National Championship in the past six seasons, Jim Calhoun became only the second coach to win multiple NCAA titles since the tournament field expanded to 64 teams in In his 33rd season as a head coach on the NCAA Division I collegiate level, Jim Calhoun's overall collegiate head coaching record is (69.4% winning effort). That includes a (64.4%) record in 14 seasons as head coach at Northeastern (MA) University and a (72.5%) mark in his 19th season at Connecticut. In , UConn began the season as the consensus No. 1 team in the nation and was one of only two teams to spend the entire season in the top ten en route to the program's second national title. UConn finished the season with a 33-6 overall record, beating Duke in the national semifinals and rolling past Georgia Tech before 44,468 fans in the national championship game in the Alamodome in San Antonio. Coach Calhoun reached several milestones during the season in addition to being a Hall of Fame finalist.
