Overfill Prevention - 3 Types Operating and Maintaining UST Booklet 1. Audible and Visual Alarm Typically connected to ATG Alarm Must be Where Operator and Delivery Driver can See and Hear Alarm 2. Ball Float Valve Restrict Flow to Tank 3. Automatic Shut Off Device A Device in the Fill Pipe Which Shuts Off Flow

Ball Float Valve

Positive Shut-off Overfill Valve

Overfill Prevention Requirements Must meet one of the following: Alert Delivery Driver When the Tank is 90% Full by Restricting Flow or Triggering Alarm OR Restricts Delivery Flow 30 Minutes Before Overfill, Must Occur at No More Than 95% Full Must Activate Audio/Visual Alarm at Least 5 Minutes Before Overfill OR Provide Positive Shut Off of Flow to the Tank When at 95% Capacity OR OR Positive Shut Off of Delivery Flow so That None of the Fittings at the Top of the Tank are Exposed to Product

Overfill Prevention There are 4 Acceptable combinations to meet this requirement: Ball Float with Sump & Sensor Max 90% Overfill Alarm (ATG) sump & sensor Max 90% Ball Float with Overfill Alarm (ATG) Max 95% Mechanical Flapper Drop Tube Max 95%

Overfill Protection What the Operator Must Do: Make Sure You Order the Right Amount Make Sure the Delivery Driver Monitors the Unloading Process Make Sure the Overfill Equipment is Working Properly

Piping Systems 3 Types of Piping Systems Pressurized Pushes Fuel to Dispenser Suction Pulls Fuel to Dispenser Gravity Dispenser is Gravity Fed

Turbine

Fiberglass Piping

Flexible Piping

Safe Suction vs. Conventional Suction Safe Suction Check Valve is Above Ground Safe because fuel drops back into the tank. No line test required if: Only one check valve per line (directly under dispenser) Piping slopes back to tank System operates under atmospheric pressure Conventional Suction Check Valve is Below Ground Line Tightness Test Every 3 Years Daily Monitor for Presence of Air in Pipeline (Cost/Quantity Wheel Jumps)

Under Dispenser Containment Acts as a Secondary Containment for Transition Piping in Dispenser Contains Releases From Dispenser and Fuel Filter

Under-Dispenser Containment

Sump Sensor Section 2630(d), 2641 (j) Located at the Lowest Point in the Sump Must Be Tested Annually
