WILLIAM S. SPEARS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Overall, the William S. Spears School of Business is successfully achieving their initiatives. In some instances, the action step exceeded the initiative the college set for themselves, while in others the actions were partially achieved. However, the College continues to move forward. The College has continued to sponsor students to conferences. The College has continued to sponsor and support diverse activities such as the study abroad programs, hosting students from Mexico and sponsoring diverse speakers for such programs as the Executive Management Briefings and the Women s Business Leadership Program. While the College has not had much success in the faculty serving as mentors for the students, several faculty members have taken a lead in working with student organizations. Nevertheless, even though this is initiative is difficult to assess, the College continues to support faculty participation. The specific goals and assessment for each goal is below. Recruitment Continued active participation in the PhD project and minority career fairs to recruit a diverse graduate student body. The Spears School of Business has been a dues-paying and participating member of the Ph.D. Project since its inception. In the past, we have recruited several outstanding doctoral candidates through recruitment at the Ph.D. Project. Due to scheduling conflicts, no faculty were able to attend the In Fall 2007, the Spears School recruited for our graduate programs at Langston University. The OSU MBA program has an agreement with Hobsons (a provider of marketing for graduate programs) to set up a web page that links to the Hispanic MBA and Black MBA websites. Hobsons tracks data on the number of times the sites are viewed and is currently preparing those data for the OSU MBA program. Continue with above. : Depending on availability of possible participants. 1
Recruitment Increase marketing of Spears School programs in other countries. In January, 2008, two MIS faculty traveled to India to promote the Spears School undergraduate and graduate programs. In fall 2007, faculty visited Viet Nam to recruit students for undergraduate and graduate programs. The Spears School has a number of exchange agreements and other relationships with foreign schools which support our marketing and recruiting efforts in other countries. The Spears School website and Intelliworks software at the graduate level make it easier for foreign to students to apply to Spears School graduate programs. Opportunities for the Spears School in other countries are being evaluated. Recruitment Also went to China in May Signed on for program 4 Year plan with various departments with Chinese province. Continue to emphasize the importance of recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty. All department heads have been advised of the critical importance of recruiting and hiring a diverse faculty. Applicants from under-represented groups receive the highest consideration. An offer has been extended to a black candidate for a position as assistant professor of economics. A verbal acceptance has been received and we expect the written acceptance shortly. 2
As turnover and new positions occur, the Spears School will continue its strong emphasis on diversity. Campus Climate Department heads always actively recruiting Offered positions to several individuals but offers not accepted due to salaries. Financial support for undergraduate and graduate minority students to attend academic and/or career enhancement activities, such as the Big XII Black Student Government Association Conference and the Black and Hispanic MBA Association Conferences. We normally defray travel expenses for 2-4 students to go to the Big XII Black Student Government Association Conference, which we have been doing for years. This year, the conference was in Stillwater and conference expenses were minimal. The Spears School provided $700 for seven business students to participate. Whenever the MBA program has a student who has an interest in attending the National Black or Hispanic MBA Association and/or related careers fairs, support is provided. Two MBA women were supported recently to attend the Women s MBA Conference in Maryland. The Spears School will also be supporting a number of MBA women to attend the 17 th Annual Women Business Leadership Program in Tulsa in March, Continue to defray expenses to support women and minority students as needed. Additional support for other conferences, etc. beyond this list. 3
Retention Increase and improve short-term international study programs through the Center of Executive and Professional Development. Summer 2007, four study abroad programs were offered with 73 students enrolled. These programs were: Summer in London, Summer in France, Toronto, and Mexico. Other travel programs included a finance course in New York City (over Spring Break) which attracted 32 students, a course including travel to New York City (in May 2007) involving 23 students, and a course including travel to Chicago (in May 2007) including 20 students. In June, 2007, the Spears School hosted a group of students from Mexico for the month. A speaker in the spring 2007 Women s Business Leadership Program was the Vice President of Diversity for Wal-Mart. February, 1008, the Spears School invited Vicente Fox, former President of Mexico, as the featured speaker at the Tulsa Business Forum and the Executive Management Briefings (in Oklahoma City). The Scholar Leader Program in the Spears School requires students to plan and complete a travel abroad experience with their faculty leader during their program. Currently (Spring 2008), similar programs are being marketed to students. Next meeting to discuss proposals has not met yet. Will meet next week. 2 students were sent to World Women s Leadership Conference. Increased scholarship funding for study abroad. 4
Retention Encourage Spears School faculty to serve as mentors or have other active participation with international and minority student groups. Bud Lacy, faculty member in the School of Accounting, is the advisor for the Japanese Student Association. Sterling Wetzel, faculty in the School of Accounting, is the advisor for the African- American Business Student Association Continued support from Spears School faculty Partnership Students have a responsibility to contact faculty/staff. Possibly delete, because it is too difficult to assess. Increase collaborative efforts in curriculum and courseware with Langston University. Faculty from the MIS department applied for and received a grant from the NSA to work with Langston faculty to create courses. Funding has been authorized; however, the work has been delayed to Summer or Fall of 2008 in accordance with Langston s needs/wishes. Continue to work with Langston to bring the grant to fruition. OSU secured monies but program has not moved forward. Lack of faculty resources from Langston. 5
