Chapter 1 Introduction This chapter introduces the key features provided by the 3310 Series SHDSL modem and describes several kinds of network examples configurable with the 3310 Series. Introduction 1-1
Introduction The Series are Single-pair High-speed Digital Subscriber Line (SHDSL) modems used for connection to the Internet or corporate intranets over ordinary telephone lines. Key Features of the 3311/3312 The 3311 and 3312 SHDSL modem provides the following key features: Provides a 10Base-T or interface: : provides 10Base-T interface : provides auto-negotiating interface Provides SHDSL interface supporting the following data transmission rate: : up to 2.3 Mbps for both upstream and downstream (2-wire mode) : up to 4.6 Mbps for both upstream and downstream (4-wire mode) Supports both symmetric and asymmetric services. Supports both adaptive and fixed data rate modes. Supports both server (CO) and client (CPE) operation modes. Supports PPPoE, PPPoA, RFC 1483 bridged/routed protocols. Supports static routing and dynamic routing (RIP v1 and RIP v2) Supports DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server and client for dynamic IP address allocation. Supports DNS (Domain Name Server) client and relay for easy mapping the domain name and IP address. Supports NAT (Network Address Translation) for conservation of registered IP addresses. Supports HTML browser interface for configuring the SHDSL modem. Can upgrade the latest modem software locally using TFTP. Supports Back-to-Back Connections for high-speed LAN extensions over a private network Series User s Manual
Key Features of the 3311N/3312N The 3311N and 3312N SHDSL modem provides the following key features: Provides auto-negotiating interface. Provides SHDSL interface supporting the following data transmission rate: N : up to 2.3 Mbps for both upstream and downstream (2-wire mode) N : up to 4.6 Mbps for both upstream and downstream (4-wire mode) Supports both symmetric and asymmetric services. Supports both adaptive and fixed data rate modes. Supports both server (CO) and client (CPE) operation modes. Supports PPPoE, PPPoA, IPoA, RFC 1483 bridged/routed protocols. Supports static routing and dynamic routing (RIP v1 and RIP v2) Supports DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server and client for dynamic IP address allocation. Supports DNS (Domain Name Server) client and relay for easy mapping the domain name and IP address. Supports NAT (Network Address Translation) for conservation of registered IP addresses. Supports Telnet and HTML browser interface for configuring the SHDSL modem. Can upgrade the latest modem software remotely using TFTP, FTP or HTTP. Supports Back-to-Back Connections for high-speed LAN extensions over a private network. Introduction 1-3
Network Configurations The 3310 Series SHDSL modem can be used for Internet Access Back-to-Back Connection (LAN-to-LAN Connection) Internet Access You can use the 3310 Series SHDSL modem for Internet access. The following figure shows a sample network using the SHDSL modem for Internet access: The SHDSL modem provides routing functions such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Network Address Translation (NAT). A built-in DHCP server automatically assigns IP addresses to s on the LAN, and with NAT these s can share a single IP address Series User s Manual
Back-to-Back Connection (LAN-to-LAN Connection) You can connect two 3311Ns or 3312Ns in a "back-to-back" configuration. This allows one CPE to terminate the traffic of a second CPE without central office (CO) equipment. This configuration can be used as a low-cost solution for communicating between two locations at a distance greater than 's 100 m range. The following figure shows a sample network using two 3311Ns to connect a branch office and the headquarter over the existing copper line (2-wire).
