Master in Forensic Psychology General information research internship Students in all specializations of the Masters program are required to devote half of the second year to a research internship. Under the supervision of either two faculty members or one faculty member and one external internship supervisor, students are required to plan, conduct and analyze the results of their own research project, resulting in an individually see Appendix 1 written Master s thesis 1. Getting started In your research internship you will be required to plan, conduct, analyze and report on your own research project, and therefore it is essential that you carefully consider your topic and choose one that really interests you. Finding a topic. There are a number of sources of information that you can use to start thinking about possible themes and topics for your research internship. You may have encountered some interesting topics during your academic coursework, or particular professors may have inspired you with their research focus. Researchers in the faculties FPN and FHML and associated research institutes that participate in the Research Master are an invaluable resource, whether you want to conduct your internship at the UM, at another Dutch university or research institute, or abroad. You are encouraged to contact UM faculty members directly to find out more about their work and to discuss possible options for research internships. You may also locate potential external internships on your own, but keep in mind that you will also need an internal UM supervisor for your internship, so it is important to discuss your plans at any early stage with a local faculty member whose research has a similar theme. Another source of information is the list of internship positions that are periodically offered or advertised for master s students in Psychology or Mental Health Sciences. The FPN posts a list on EleUm in the Research Internship Domain (Internships Faculty of Psychology). Both FPN and FHML list new internship positions in the Observant. It is possible to conduct a duo internship, together with a fellow student. In this case, you should both ask permission from the board of exams before you can start. In the case of a duo internship, both students should formulate and investigate their own, individual research question. Both students also write their own, individual Master s thesis. Please note: Once you have agreed to do your research internship with a particular supervisor, you stick to this project and inform potential other supervisors with whom you have been in touch with, about your final choice: do not shop around, giving several supervisors the impression that your are going to conduct your research with all of them! The role of the internship coordinators. After the initial brainstorming and exploratory phase, even if you have already located an internship, it is possible to make an appointment with the internship coordinator for your Last update January
track. The internship coordinator can help you complete all the necessary formalities. If, for example, you have been invited to work in the lab of a researcher you contacted on your own initiative, the coordinator can assist you if needed in finding a suitable faculty member from FPN to serve as the local (faculty) supervisor for your internship. For internal as well as external research internships, the coordinator monitors administrative procedures that are necessary before your internship can actually begin. The FPN Education Office is responsible for setting up these contracts, based on the information provided in your application form (that can be downloaded from eleum). The Education Office will then ask the Exam Administration office to confirm that you have met all course requirements. The student and the institutional supervisor and the faculty supervisor must sign the internship contract and return it to the FPN Education Office at least 4 weeks before the starting date of the internship. The contract is not valid until signed by the general internship coordinator. If, afterwards, there appears to be no contract set up at all, it means that your internship was illegal. This implies that you were not insured, and also cannot be assessed afterwards. Procedures and regulations concerning the internship position. There are two basic types of internships. An internal internship is a research internship at Maastricht University, FPN. An external internship is any research internship outside the UM, FPN. Slightly different rules and regulations apply to the two different types. Check the Education and Exam Regulations (OER) on eleum for up-to-date information. 2. The internal research internship To get a better idea of what kinds of research are being done, you can look at the websites of FPN research staff and check the internship options on eleum. Two faculty members from FPN will supervise you during your internal research internship. These faculty supervisors must have an appointment at the FPN faculty and at least one of them holds a PhD degree or equivalent. The second supervisor can be a PhD student. The first supervisor can also be an advanced PhD student (from the 3 rd year on), who has already supervised a research internship as the second assessor. The first supervisor is the person whom you can turn to for advice and help on most aspects of your internship. Usually, the first supervisor will help you with the selection of the second (faculty) supervisor, but in exceptional cases you may have to turn to the Internship coordinator for assistance. Last update January
3. The external research internship The external internship is any research internship outside the FPN. For example, internships in other universities in the Netherlands or abroad, hospitals, and assessment centres are all classified as external research internships. A member of staff from the institution where the internship takes place will supervise you (external supervisor, with PhD or equivalent). This external supervisor will familiarize you with the organization, and will be the person whom you can turn to for advice and help. For the external internship, you will also need an additional UM faculty supervisor, who is a qualified member (i.e., lecturer or researcher with PhD or equivalent) of the faculty of FPN. It is the role of the faculty supervisor to maintain contact with the student while he/she is at the external institution. The faculty supervisor will also communicate with the external supervisor on a regular basis to ensure that the external internship runs smoothly. If the external supervisor is qualified (completed PhD or equivalent), he/she may be the first assessor of your research proposal and your Master s thesis. In the case that the external supervisor is not qualified at that level, the faculty supervisor will act as the first assessor and an additional second assessor will be needed. You will be responsible for finding the second assessor yourself. However, the faculty supervisor and the internship coordinator can assist you in this. The external supervisor remains responsible for the assessment of the practical execution of the internship. 4. Internships abroad As a result of numerous international collaborative programs with universities and other research institutions, as well as the large number of individual foreign research contacts that have been established by our faculty members, a substantial number of students will conduct their research internship abroad. The rules and regulations of these international internships are identical to those applying for external internships in the Netherlands. The International Relations Office can provide information on existing exchange programs that may sometimes also be used for internships, as well as practical information on specific topics such as visa applications, funding, etc. Please note that there are strict deadlines for applying for funding! After this deadline, it is not possible to apply for funding anymore. For information regarding internships abroad (e.g. grant options, grant application deadlines, experience reports from FPN students who did an internship abroad, etc), please refer to EleUM ( > My Organisations > FPN Students general > International Relations Office > Research project (internship) Abroad (Master's students), contact the International Relations Office through (iro-outgoing-fpn@maastrichtuniversity.nl) or sign up for an appointment through the Service Desk of the Education Office. For matters concerning research aspects of the international internship, contact your UM faculty supervisor. 5. The research proposal A complete research proposal consists of the following parts: a brief theoretical background of the research the question(s) addressed by the research a description of the research plan a description of the research methods to be applied a description of the techniques to be used for the processing and analyzing of data; a reference list a timetable Last update January
As a rough guideline, the length of the research proposal should be between 1600 and 2800 words. You can of course use large parts of this research proposal for the introduction and method section of your master s thesis. The final proposal must be submitted to both supervisors within 4 weeks of commencing the research internship. Your proposal must be evaluated and formally approved by both the first and the second assessor before you can start the actual research (i.e., participant recruitment and/or data collection). Therefore, the earlier you can submit your proposal, the better! Early planning is crucial to ensure completion of the project within a reasonable time frame. The proposal is evaluated (sufficient/insufficient) on the Individual Assessment Form Master (see below). Also discuss with your supervisor at an early stage whether additional clearances are needed (e.g., from an institutional review board) before your research can get started. If this is the case, your proposal may need to be worked out in even greater detail. This all takes time! 6. Ethical approval of your research Ethical approval must be obtained for all research conducted by FPN students. In the case of an internal internship (at UM), the student and the first (faculty) supervisor a request for ethical approval to the Ethical Committee of Psychology (ECP). In case the study is part of a research line that was already approved, new approval is not needed but a notification of this earlier approval should be sent to the faculty supervisor. Ethical approval may also be obtained from the (external) institute where the internship is done. A copy of this approval is then sent to the faculty supervisor of the student. In case ethical approval cannot be obtained from the external internship organization, the second supervisor needs to submit a request for ethical approval to the ECP (Ethical Committee of Psychology). Please note that, in some cases, ethical approval needs to be obtained from a Medical Ethical Committee (MEC). If this is the case, this means that procedures will take longer and perhaps your research internship will last longer. Discuss this issue in time with your supervisor(s), to prevent (too) long internship durations. 7. Internship assessment Three aspects of your internship will be assessed: (1) the research proposal (see also 5.), (2) the practical execution of the internship, and (3) the Master s thesis (please refer to the Education and Exam Regulations for further details). In order to obtain credit, students must have satisfactorily completed the research proposal, the research internship practical part, and the Master s thesis. The research proposal (see also 5.) is evaluated as sufficient/insufficient by both supervisors; the practical execution of the internship and the Master s thesis are graded on a 10-point scale (half-point increments). Assessment of the practical execution of the internship To make a clear distinction between the practical part of the internship and the master thesis, the practical part (Dutch: uitvoering) of the research internship will be graded as well. This aspect will be graded on a 10-point scale by the first supervisor. This grade will not be included in the overall GPA (grade point average). This is done to avoid that this part will largely influence the GPA, because of the large number of credits awarded to the practical part (25 in the master). As for the grading of the practical part, the following aspects are taken into account: Practical skills Accuracy/precision Planning (realisation time schedule) Last update January
Organisational skills Data collection / analysis Independence Taking initiative Communication Attitude Commitment Dedication Collaboration Collegiality * Assessment of the master s thesis Both the first and second supervisor assess the Master s thesis. The Master s thesis will be assessed on aspects of content as well as format and must comply fully with the norms set for content, structure, form (layout) and language usage, as described in the handbook of writing skills. Criteria related to content (1) formulation of the research question(s) and hypotheses, 2) scientific content/specialized aspects, 3) argumentation/ line of reasoning/ motivation) and 4) format will be assessed separately and contribute to the final mark for the thesis. The final grade for the thesis, based on the abovementioned four aspects, needs to be at least 6.0 for the student to pass. The Master s thesis is graded by averaging the scores given by the first and the second assessor. Both grades must be at least 6.0 and the difference between the grades may not be more than 2 points. You can apply for an Individual Assessment Form Master by sending an to: fdpmasterthese@maastrichtuniversity.nl Copies of the assessment form will then be sent directly to the assessor(s). Students will graduate automatically after all the necessary products were handed in. The final version of the master thesis must be submitted at: fdp-masterthese@maastrichtuniversity.nl 8. Insurance during your internship The host institution in which you conduct your internship is responsible for concluding a liability insurance for you. As you will work under supervision and are not yet a registered professional yourself, there is no professional liability insurance needed. In the event your host institution failed to conclude the necessary insurance and something unforeseen does happen, the UM provides for a back-up liability insurance. The department of Treasury of the UM (contactperson: mr. W. Hoenjet) will have a mediating role. Please note that it is your own responsibility to conclude a liability insurance for the time outside your work (private / off work). If you remain in the Netherlands, then you will likely already have such an insurance policy. When you go abroad, check your policy, whether you are covered abroad as well. Needless to say, you need to take care of your own health care insurance as well. Last update January
Appendix 1 Guidelines for research internships Students of the master programs of the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, Maastricht University, are required to conduct a research internship that involves 1) planning, 2) conducting, and 3) analyzing the results of the student s own research project. This work will result in an individually written 4) master s thesis. 1) Planning In this research project, the full empiric cycle must be followed. The student comes up with his/ her own research question; in case of a duo internship, both students should formulate and investigate their own research question. In case of participation in ongoing research, the student also formulates his/ her own research question. The research question must be a scientific question that can be answered with the research project. Research projects can be both qualitative and quantitative in nature. The research topic is preferably matching with the content of the student s master track. Although this is not a requirement, it seems more logical for the student s curriculum vitae to investigate a topic within the realm of the chosen master track. 2) Conducting The extent of the internship should be in proportion to the amount of credits (EC) (which varies somewhat between different master programs/ research master etcetera). 1 EC = 28 hours Students preferably test (real) participants; this is also to the student s advantage, as he/ she will be able to get in touch with the future work field. In case this is not possible, the data must be at least originating from participants (such as in research with databases, questionnaire research, existing image and sound material). In case this is not possible (e.g., in case of a meta analysis), more emphasis must be put on one or more other parts of the empirical cycle (e.g., more advanced statistics, and/ or more background/ introduction to the topic, leading to the research question). The number of participants is preferably related to the power calculation in the research, but should not be a leading criterion for a good research internship. The number of participants should be scientifically valuable yet also practically doable within the time frame of Last update January
the internship. This accounts for a minimum amount of participants, but also for a maximum amount of participants. The number of participants can be adjusted downward if requested by circumstances - but not upward. The research proposal plays an important part here: in this proposal (which must be assessed by both supervisors prior to the data collection) the estimated number of participants will be specified and can be discussed. 3) Analyzing Statistics should be in concordance with the research design: students must be able to answer the research question/ hypotheses with corresponding, adequate statistical methods. Accordingly, different methods are used in qualitative and quantitative research, respectively. 4) Master s thesis The master s thesis should be individually written, in the English language. The master s thesis needs to meet both the formal guidelines and the content guidelines. Concerning the length, guidelines are provided which relate to the amount of credits (EC). A master s thesis that is rewarded 10 EC may contain about 8000 words, whereas a master s thesis that is rewarded 7 EC may contain around 5500 words. These are, however, guidelines. Eventually, content and completeness are significant in this respect. Last update January
