together Report to the Community

Greg Ness, chairman, president and CEO, and Dr. Brian Druker, director of the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, at an employee event. Employees, retirees and The Standard raised $540,000 for the 2014 Knight Cancer Challenge. We re all in this together The Standard a financial services company was founded in Portland, Ore., in From that very first day, our company has attracted the kind of people who want The Standard to be known for our industry expertise and our compassion. I m proud to say that tradition is still alive and well more than 100 years later. At The Standard, we share a common belief that when it comes to the success of communities, we re all in this together. In 2014, employees and retirees of The Standard joined together with the company to donate time, expertise and money to groups that help children learn and grow, feed and house people and families facing barriers to success, improve our environment, broaden access to the arts and more. The Standard and The Standard Charitable Foundation directed additional funding and support to similar community partners. We had a great year together a record-breaking year in fact. Through our signature annual Employee Giving Campaign, we raised almost $2 million for nonprofits! You ll read more about that in this report. Another annual tradition is our Jeans Days program. Employees purchase a pass to wear jeans on Fridays and the company matches their donations; funds are distributed to a single nonprofit. In 2014, we partnered with the Knight Cancer Challenge in support of OHSU s historic effort to raise a billion dollars thanks to a $500 million challenge grant from Phil and Penny Knight to help end cancer as we know it. The Standard sweetened the deal for employees, offering two jeans days for the price of one AND a double match. By the time it was all said and done, we raised $540,000! I m always moved by the generosity of my colleagues, but 2014 was special, and not just because we broke so many records. I don t know a single person who hasn t been touched by cancer, and the thought that we can be part of ending that terrible disease right here in Portland, Ore., is nothing short of remarkable. Keep reading to learn more about this effort and the many other ways employees and retirees of The Standard made a difference, together, in J. Greg Ness Chairman, president and CEO

Stronger together In 2014, The Standard, employees, retirees and The Standard Charitable Foundation supported more than 1,000 nonprofits with time, expertise and money, investing in the well-being of others and helping strengthen our communities. Employees support a wide range of organizations and causes, but our company and our foundation place special emphasis on helping individuals and families who have experienced a loss or setback, such as a disability or the loss of a loved one. Learn more about our funding priorities by visiting our website: standard.com/community. Together employees of The Standard and the company took caring about others to the next level At The Standard, caring about people is our job and our passion. That shows up in the work we do, the customer service we provide and our community involvement. In 2014, here are a few of the ways we cared: By volunteering. The Standard provides employees with paid time off annually to volunteer. Many employees use those hours in company-sponsored Days of Caring to support community partners Employees repaired and refurbished bikes during an annual company-sponsored Day of Caring at the Community Cycling Center, which broadens access to bicycling and its benefits. By embracing sustainable business practices. One of The Standard s goals is to ensure a sustainable future for our company, our communities and our planet; we want to leave all three better than when we found them. In 2014, we continued our commitment by reducing The Standard s environmental footprint. That work is overseen by an all-volunteer Green Team and a Sustainability Steering Committee more than 100 company-supported employees working to reduce our environmental impact. Together employees of The Standard and the company connected like never before Here are a few of the ways we helped connect employees, and the support and resources of our company and foundation, with those in need: Placed employees on nonprofit boards. The Standard connects employees with nonprofits that seek their expertise, guidance and leadership support on their boards of directors. Our 65 officers are expected to serve on at least one civic or nonprofit board and we offer annual nonprofit board training for interested employees. In 2014, the effort helped us connect with dozens of charitable, civic and business organizations making a real difference in our communities. Hosted two volunteer expos. Each September, The Standard hosts Oregon s largest Volunteer Expo in Portland (now in its seventh year), and last year our Cincinnati, Ohio, office held its third annual expo. These expos help connect employees and the public with the local volunteer opportunities that match their interests and expertise. In 2014, more than 150 nonprofit organizations participated in our expos. such as schools, Meals-on-Wheels and literacy programs. In 2014, employees logged an impressive 20,000-plus volunteer hours. By wearing blue jeans: Our Jeans Days Program, now in its seventh year, allows employees to wear jeans on Thursdays and Fridays in exchange for a $100 donation to a nonprofit partner. In 2014, employee donations were double-matched by The Standard, and this partnership raised more than $540,000 for the Knight Cancer Challenge the largest gift we ve ever made to a single nonprofit. The Standard s annual Volunteer Expos in Cincinnati and Portland connect employees and the public with volunteer opportunities inside more than 150 nonprofit partners.

Funded doers. Our Dollars for Doers program, established in 1985, encourages employees to request philanthropic support from The Standard for the organizations at which they volunteer. In 2014, 15 nonprofit organizations each received $500 through this program. Together employees and the company made record-breaking contributions Employees volunteer monthly at Blanchet House, a nonprofit that provides free hot meals to those in need and operates a transitional shelter program for men struggling with addiction, unemployment or home and family issues. Recognized outstanding employee volunteers. The Standard maintains a Leo Award program in honor of Leo Samuel, the man who in 1906 founded the company that would become The Standard. Each year through this award program, the company recognizes four employee volunteers who exemplify the community spirit of Leo Samuel and makes a donation of $1,000 to their nonprofit. In addition to contributing time, expertise and enthusiasm, we also contribute financially to nonprofits, schools and other community organizations. In 2014, we contributed through: Giving by employees and retirees. The annual Employee Giving Campaign, one of our signature events, offers employees and retirees the chance to donate to nonprofit organizations or educational institutions of their choice and have their donations matched dollar-for-dollar by the company. In 2014, employees and retirees contributed nearly $1 million to 1,150 organizations. After The Standard s match, $1.75 million was distributed to nonprofit partners across the nation. Impact at a Glance TOTAL 2014 GIVING $2.8m EMPLOYEE GIVING CAMPAIGN $1.75m donated by employees/retirees and matched by the company 1,907 employees participated 1,150 nonprofit organizations benefitted EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERISM 30 Day of Caring events 20,000 volunteer hours 65 all senior leaders serve on boards

Employing people with disabilities. A grant of $25,000 supported CAREERS for People with Disabilities, an organization with a mission of finding productive employment for individuals with learning, developmental, psychiatric and/or physical disabilities. The Standard supported the Workforce Readiness, Placement and Training Program for this Valhalla, N.Y.-based nonprofit. Providing recovery from addiction and mental health challenges. LifeWorks NW of Portland, Ore., received a $25,000 grant from The Standard for Project Network: Building Community One Family at a Time, a project to build a new home for their wellestablished, culturally focused residential drug and alcohol treatment program. The program provides quality and culturally responsive mental health and addiction services for 100 families each year. We accomplished so much in 2014, and we re just getting started. More than 75 employees and family members participate every year in the SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup on the Oregon coast. An Oregon tradition for 30 years, 5,100 volunteers removed 62,500 pounds of litter and marine debris and hauled away 47 tires. Corporate and foundation giving. The Standard and The Standard Charitable Foundation target contributions in the areas of health and disabilities, education and cultural development. In 2014, giving by The Standard, its employees, retirees and The Standard Charitable Foundation totaled $2.8 million. The Standard: Ready to make a difference, together, in 2015! For more information To learn more about community involvement at The Standard or to apply for a corporate contribution or a foundation grant, visit standard.com/community. Accepting the Challenge! The Standard launched a special partnership with Oregon Health & Science University and its historic Knight Cancer Challenge. In 2014, The Standard pledged at least $250,000 toward OHSU s $500 million matching grant challenge from Nike, Inc., co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny Knight. If OHSU can raise an additional $500 million and it is well on the way to achieving that goal OHSU will have $1 billion to focus on ending cancer as we know it. Employees, retirees and The Standard raised $540,000 for the Knight Cancer Challenge during the 2014 Employee Giving Campaign. More highlights from 2014 Activating potential. A grant of $25,000 was awarded to Freestore Foodbank. This Cincinnati nonprofit provides food and services and creates stability and self-reliance for people in crisis. The Standard funded the Cincinnati COOKS! initiative, a program that trains unemployed and under-employed adults in the culinary arts, preparing them for careers in the food-service industry. Employees from The Standard s Los Angeles Employee Benefit Sales and Service office joined forces with more than 100 employees from Mercer, one of our largest national strategic partners, to help nonprofit partner KaBOOM! build a playground from the ground up in just eight hours.
