1 Department of Nursing Registered Nursing Diann Williams, MSN, RN, CNE Chairperson Instructors Terica Woods, MSN, RN Carolyn Hood, MSN, RN Shawna Hughey, DNP, MSN, RN UAPB offers two (2) program tracks leading to the B.S. in Nursing (Non- Teaching) *Pre-licensure Program Track (Generic) The Generic program is open to students who have completed the prescribed core of basic science and liberal arts courses required to establish the foundational knowledge for upper division nursing courses. *See the 8 semester (Curriculum) plan. Students applying for admission to upper division must meet basic functional ability and skill requirements for professional nurses. Functional abilities are those physical and mental activities and attributes needed by a nurses to practice essential functions safely, with or without accommodations. Students must also meet the following admission requirements: Gain admission to the University. Declare nursing as an intended major. File an application with the Department of Nursing no later than March 15 for the fall semester of the year in which the student plans to seek admission. Students admitted to the program must have completed program prerequisite courses and maintained a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and a grade of C or better in all prerequisite courses. Admission GPA is calculated using only general education prerequisite courses and previous nursing courses. Elective course hours are excluded. Successfully complete the required Departmental Admission Exam (s) (The Department reserves the right to determine the vendor for the Admission Exam.) Submit official copies of transcripts from all schools attended. Obtain an ACT of 19 or above or comparable Compass test scores. Evidence of successful completion of required 1
2 remedial courses may be accepted. A. If applicant was not born in the U.S. or in a country where English is the official language, an official TOEFL score of 550 or above on the paper-based exam, or 213 or above on the computer-based exam, or a minimum score of 20 in each section of the ibt, is required. The test must have been taken within the last two (2) calendar years of admission. Official TOEFL exam score report reflecting successful completion must be received no later than one (1) month after the application deadline date. Only TOEFL test scores received directly from ETS will be accepted. Testing information is available at: B. If applicant was not born in the U.S. or in a country where English is the official language, but the applicant s entire educational experience has been in the United States, the TOEFL is not needed. The applicant must submit records/transcripts from the time he or she was in the seventh grade through high school and college. If the applicant cannot provide this documentation, he or she may appeal to the Department of Nursing Admission Committee, then to the Chairperson of the Department of Nursing, and finally to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. If applicant is an International student and is basing admission eligibility on credits from an international accredited college or university, he/she must follow the admission procedures for the University which are found in the UAPB Catalog and on the UAPB home page. Upon Admission to the program students must present evidence of clinical requirements: TB Skin Test Hepatitis Series Current CPR Certification Criminal Background checks (CBC) Urine Drug Screens The cost of these screenings is at the expense of the individual student. CBC s will be completed by which is a part of Castle Branch, 2
3 Inc. The results are posted on the CertifiedBackground.com web site in a secure tamper-proof location. This allows the student and the UAPB Department of Nursing administrators to view the results. The urine drug screen is coordinated by this company, but is conducted at Lab Corp. Each student will receive instructions from CertifiedBackground.com regarding the closest Lab Corp facility to them. Students who have been convicted of **certain crimes may not be allowed to do clinical in certain clinical agencies and declared ineligible by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing to test for licensure (NCLEX-RN), despite successful completion of the program. Students who have a conviction must make this fact known at time of application. All applicants accepted into the nursing program will be required to have a background check and will be required to pay all associated fees. The Pre-Licensure (Generic) BSN program is approved by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. Grading Scale for all Nursing Courses A B C D F 59 or below Nursing Course Descriptions NURS 3201 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT I (2) This introductory course provides a foundation for other nursing courses. Concepts basic to the nursing profession, concepts necessary for successful completion of a baccalaureate in nursing program will be discussed. Lecture: 2 hours per week. Prerequisite: admission to the nursing program. Credits: 2 semester hours. Concurrent: NURS 3301, NURS 3309, NURS 3203, NURS 3304, and NURS NURS 3301 HEALTH ASSESSMENT (3) This course is designed to prepare students to complete a physical and health assessment of infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patient. Students will acquire knowledge to elect a health history of physical and health assessment, and history taking to promote the critical analysis of normal and abnormal data. Emphasis is placed on utilization of accurate medical terminology and nursing documentation in the process of history taking and the nursing process. The student will learn to apply the basic skills of observation, inspection, palpation, and auscultation in the head to toe assessment. Variation of culture in the health assessment procedure is also emphasized. Discussion, application, and documentation of health assessment skills need to be 6
7 guided toward providing caring competent nursing interventions. This 3 hours course is made up of 2 credits of didactics and 1 credit hour of laboratory skills = 3 hours of laboratory time. Thus, for a 15 week semester, this course will be 2 hours theory = 30 clock hours and 1 hour credit lab = 45 clock hours. Credit: 3 semester hours. Prerequisite: Admission to the nursing program. Concurrent: NURS 3201, NURS 3309, NURS 3203, NURS 3304, and NURS NURS 3309 FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING THEORY This course introduces beginning nursing students to the concepts and psychomotor skills needed to provide nursing care to individuals with compromised health problems across the life span. The nursing process, drug math calculations, and selected psychomotor skills are core content for the course. This course meets the mission and philosophy of the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff and the Department of Nursing by establishing a foundation on which additional knowledge can be developed. This course must be taken concurrently with NURS 3203 Fundamentals of Nursing Practicum. If either component of Fundamentals of Nursing results in a failure, a failing grade will be reported for both theory and practicum components. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Credit: 3 semester hours. Prerequisite: Admission to the Nursing Program. This course requires the completion of 90 clinical hours and is a pass/fail course. The nursing process, drug math calculations, and psychomotor skills are integrated within the course content. This course meets the mission and philosophy of the University of Arkansas and the Department of Nursing by establishing a foundation on which future knowledge can be developed. Concurrent Courses: NURS 3309, NURS 3201, NURS 3301, and NURS 3304, and NURS NURS 3304 PHARMACOLOGY This course focuses on building a foundation on the basic pharmacologic principles with emphasis on the pharmacotherapeutics of drugs. The course material is structured to prepare the student to critically think and make appropriate clinical judgment on the drug therapy of patients with varied health care needs. The course integrates knowledge of therapeutic nursing interventions and application of into drug therapy. While focusing on the rights of drug administration, the student will gain knowledge on the legal, cultural and ethical implications of drug therapy. By understanding the rationale of a drug being prescribed and the intended therapeutic effect of the medication the student will be able to ensure safe medication administration. Knowledge gained in this course will serve as a foundation for drug therapy that will be used consistently throughout the students matriculation in the nursing program and in the nursing practice setting. Issues related to privacy protection, confidentiality, security of information in health care environments, and the potential use of social networking tools in communication health care information are discussed. Concurrent: NURS 3201, NURS 3301, NURS 3309, NURS 3203, and NURS NURS 3204 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT II: ROLES AND ETHICS (2) This course is designed to emphasize the foundational relevance of ethics to the practice of professional nursing. This course helps the students determine when they and others are experiencing moral and ethical angst, and helps them develop pathways of reflective thinking and communicating related to ethical challenges in nursing practice. Thoroughly reading the ANA Code of Ethics 8
9 and making its provisions determinants for ethical practice is a course expectation. Upon exit from the course, the student will employ the ANA Code as a compass in the challenging conundrums emerging across the spectrum of the work of nursing from health promotion to death with the assured preservation of dignity of clients/patients from conception to death. The nursing process of patient assessment, needs identification, intervention, implementation and evaluation, and pharmacology are reinforced through assigned client experiences focused on these populations. Concurrent Courses: NURS 3308, NURS 3204, 3307, NURS 3207 and NURS NURS 4314 PSYCHIATRIC- MENTAL HEALTH NURSING CARE THEORY The focus of this course is on the therapeutic and empathetic use of the nurse s interpersonal skills, and the nurse s therapeutic and effective use of self, with clients who have psycho-social and mental health needs. Emphasis is on the therapeutic relationship and its potential to assist individuals and families in in-patient and outpatient settings, establish greater cognitive and emotional equilibrium, and greater measures of mental health. The focus is on treatment modalities, such as milieu therapy, crisis intervention, and psychopharmacology, designed for health promotion, maintenance, and restoration throughout the lifespan. The course content helps students plan and engage in therapeutic dialogue in intrapersonal dyads or group interventions. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Semester Credit hours: 3. Prerequisites: NURS 3204, NURS 3307, NURS 3207, NURS 3308, and NURS Concurrent Courses: NURS NURS 4210 PSYCHIATRIC- MENTAL HEALTH NURSING CARE PRACTICUM This course is the practicum component of NURS 4314 Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Care Theory. These courses are taught concurrently to insure that the student can integrate the theoretical bases for compassion and competent delivery of clinical care for clients/patients who face mental health challenges. This course requires the completion of 90 clinical hours and is a pass/fail course. Both the theory component and the practicum component must be completed 10

Prerequisite: NURS 3204, NURS 3307, NURS 3207, NURS 3308, NURS Concurrent Courses: NURS NURS 4310 EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE AND NURSING RESEARCH (3) Evidenced-based Practice and Nursing Research advances the mission and philosophy of the UAPB Department of Nursing by preparing students for scholarly excellence in future nursing roles. Students acquire skills in reading and critiquing qualitative and quantitative research which includes quality improvement, communication techniques, clinical judgment, and nursing interventions with diverse populations. Students learn to apply ethical principles when critiquing research involving human subjects. Student develop evidence-based research utilization posters, through which they derive nursing implications based on best practices. Leadership, clinical judgment and communication skills are enhanced through dissemination of their posters in class and if possible during the university s Annual Research Forum. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Credit: 3 semester hours. Prerequisite: NURS 4304 and NURS Concurrent: NURS 4304, NURS 4203, NURS 4309, NURS 4205 and NURS NURS 4304 NURSING CARE OF CHILDREN THEORY This course focuses on the holistic care of the pediatric patients and their family. Aiming toward health restoration and health promotion the student will gain knowledge to employ evidence based practice to provide high quality care to pediatric patients facing a vast variety of health issues. The student will develop therapeutic communication skills when caring for the pediatric patients during childhood and through adolescence. Knowledge gained in this course will provide the student with a foundation that will allow for competent care of the pediatric patient. This course will be taken concurrently with NURS 4203 Nursing Care of Children Practicum. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Semester credit hours: 3. Senior nursing students are prepared to care for adults with chronic medical surgical health problems in the acute setting. Medical Surgical Nursing Care II advances the mission and philosophy of the UAPB Department of Nursing by preparing senior nursing students to practice professional nursing as a generalist based on the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice and the American Nurses Association (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice (2010). Nursing Care of Older Adults is designed in congruence with the mission 12
13 and philosophy of the UAPB Department of Nursing, informed by American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics (2001), Nursing s Social Policy (2012), ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2010). Senior nursing students are introduced to foundation of critical care and emergency nursing concepts. This course prepares students to care for individuals and families throughout the life span experiencing acute and complex medical surgical health problems. Medical Surgical Nursing Care III Theory advances the mission and philosophy of the UAPB Department of Nursing by preparing senior nursing students to practice professional nursing as a generalist based on the AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice, the American Nurses Association, (ANA) Scope and Standards of Practice (2010, and the Standard and Scope of Practice by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Lecture: 3 hours per week. Concurrent Courses: NURS 4306, NURS 4209, NURS 4111, NURS 4206, NURS 4207, and NURS 4207 MEDICAL- SURGICAL NURSING CARE III (PRACTICUM) This course is the practicum component of NURS 4313 Medical Surgical Nursing Care III Theory and requires completion of 90 clinical hours. This is a pass/fail course. Students are assigned clinical experience in acute and critical care areas. Students also spend time in the Emergency department. Both the theory component and the practicum component must be successfully completed. If either the theory or practicum results in a failing grade, a failing grade will be recorded for both theory and practicum and both courses will have to be repeated concurrently. 14 NURS 4306 NURSING CARE OF COMMUNITIES AND POPULATIONS THEORY (3) This course focuses on public health promotion by applying prevention, detection, and rehabilitation concepts to individuals, families, and communities. Since the development of public policy there is more of a focus on health promotion, lifestyle factors, and disease prevention. The course emphasizes on the continued changes within the public health system that are needed for future decline in death, illness and disability. The course will focus on the goals and objectives of Healthy People 2020 targeting social, economic, and environmental factors that impact healthy communities, individuals, families, communities, and populations across the life span. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Credit: 3 semester hours. This course requires the completion of 90 clinical hours and is a pass/fail course. Both the theory or practicum results in failing grade, a failing grade will be recorded for both theory and practicum and both courses will have to be repeated concurrently. Credit: 2 semester hours. Practicum: 6 hours per week (90 clinical hours). During the course students are required to demonstrate readiness for success on the NCLEX-RN through obtaining the required readiness predictor score on a nationally normed exam to be determined by the department. The student read landmark documents that are summaries of research and evidence based recommendations for best quality care, consider best approaches, and develop core competencies to insure the implementation of best practices for better health care. Lecture: 2 hours per week. Credit: 2 semester hours. (a) Each first-time applicant for a license issued by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing shall apply to the Identification Bureau of the Department of Arkansas State Police for a state and national criminal background check, to be 15
16 conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. (b) The check shall conform to the applicable federal standards and shall include the taking of fingerprints. (c) The applicant shall sign a release of information to the board and shall be responsible to the Department of Arkansas State Police for the payment of any fee associated with the criminal background check. (d) Upon completion of the criminal background check, the Identification Bureau of the Department of Arkansas State Police shall forward to the board all information obtained concerning the applicant in the commission of any offense listed in subsection (e) of this section. (e) Except as provided in subdivision (l)(1) of this section, no person shall be eligible to receive or hold a license issued by the board if that person has pleaded guilty or nolo contendere to, or been found guilty of any of the following offenses by any court in the State of Arkansas or of any similar offense by a court in another state or of any similar offense by a federal court: (1) Capital murder as prohibited in ; (2) Murder in the first degree as prohibited in and murder in the second degree as prohibited in ; (3) Manslaughter as prohibited in ; (4) Negligent homicide as prohibited in ; (5) Kidnapping as prohibited in ; (6) False imprisonment in the first degree as prohibited in ; (7) Permanent detention or restraint as prohibited in ; (8) Robbery as prohibited in ; (9) Aggravated robbery as prohibited in ; (10)Battery in the first degree as prohibited in ; (11) Aggravated assault as prohibited in ; (12) Introduction of controlled substance into 16
17 the body of another person as prohibited in ; (13) Terroristic threatening in the first degree as prohibited in ; (14) Rape as prohibited in ; (15) Sexual indecency with a child as prohibited in ; (16) Sexual assault in the first degree, second degree, third degree, and fourth degree as prohibited in ; (17) Incest as prohibited in ; (18) Offenses against the family as prohibited in ; (19) Endangering the welfare of an incompetent person in the first degree as prohibited in ; (20) Endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree as prohibited in ; (21) Permitting abuse of a child as prohibited in (a)(1) and (3); (22) Engaging children in sexually explicit conduct for use in visual or print media, transportation of minors for prohibited sexual conduct, pandering or possessing visual or print medium depicting sexually explicit conduct involving a child, or use of a child or consent to use of a child in a sexual performance by producing, directing, or promoting a sexual performance by a child as prohibited in , , and ; (23) Felony adult abuse as prohibited in ; (24) Theft of property as prohibited in ; (25) Theft by receiving as prohibited in ; (26) Arson as prohibited in ; (27) Burglary as prohibited in ; (28) Felony violation of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act as prohibited in ; (29) Promotion of prostitution in the first degree as prohibited in ; (30) Stalking as prohibited in ; 17
18 (31) Criminal attempt, criminal complicity, criminal solicitation, or criminal conspiracy as prohibited in , , , and , to commit any of the offenses listed in this subsection; (32) Computer child pornography as prohibited in ; and (33) Computer exploitation of a child in the first degree as prohibited in (f)(1)(a) The board may issue a nonrenewable temporary permit for licensure to a first-time applicant pending the results of the criminal background check. (B) The permit shall be valid for no more than six (6) months. (2) Except as provided in subdivision (l)(1) of this section, upon receipt of information from the Identification Bureau of the Department of Arkansas State Police that the person holding the letter of provisional licensure has pleaded guilty or nolo contendere to, or has been found guilty of, any offense listed in subsection (e) of this section, the board shall immediately revoke the provisional license. (g)(1) The provisions of subsections (e) and subdivision (f)(2) of this section may be waived by the board upon the request of: (A) An affected applicant for licensure; or (B) The person holding a license subject to revocation. (2) Circumstances for which a waiver may be granted shall include, but not be limited to, the following: (A) The age at which the crime was committed; (B) The circumstances surrounding the crime; (C) The length of time since the crime; (D) Subsequent work history; (E) Employment references; (F) Character references; and (G) Other evidence demonstrating that the applicant does not pose a threat to the health or safety of the public. 18
19 (h)(1) Any information received by the board from the Identification Bureau of the Department of Arkansas State Police pursuant to this section shall not be available for examination except by: (A) The affected applicant for licensure, or his authorized representative; or (B) The person whose license is subject to revocation or his or her authorized representative. (2) No record, file, or document shall be removed from the custody of the Department of Arkansas State Police. (i) Any information made available to the affected applicant for licensure or the person whose license is subject to revocation shall be information pertaining to that person only. (j) Rights of privilege and confidentiality established in this section shall not extend to any document created for purposes other than this background check. (k) The board shall adopt the necessary rules and regulations to fully implement the provisions of this section. (l)(1) For purposes of this section, an expunged record of a conviction or a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to an offense listed in subsection (e) of this section shall not be considered a conviction, guilty plea, or nolo contendere plea to the offense unless the offense is also listed in subdivision (l)(2) of this section. (2) Because of the serious nature of the offenses and the close relationship to the type of work that is to be performed, the following shall result in permanent disqualification: (A) Capital murder as prohibited in ; (B) Murder in the first degree as prohibited in and murder in the second degree as prohibited in ; (C) Kidnapping as prohibited in ; (D) Rape as prohibited in ; (E) Sexual assault in the first degree as prohibited in 19
