6 CTEP Teacher Leader Online Lesson Descriptions Lesson 1a- Competency Shifts for Teacher Leadership For student performance to improve in a school that has been low-performing for a long time, all of the adults in the building will have to do things differently. This lesson is designed to help you identify some of the behavior changes that you will need to make and the underlying competencies that you will need to make these changes to become a more highly effective teacher leader in your school. The overall message of this online lesson is simple: the change that needs to happen should begin with you. Lesson 1b- Establishing Turnaround Competency Development Goals As a teacher leader, you need to take responsibility for your own personal development. This lesson focuses on how to develop and reach personal competency goals. You will learn the steps to determine which competencies you need to improve on, how to set goals for improvement, and how to create a plan to reach these goals. Lesson 2a- Collaborative Leadership As a teacher-leader, you will be most effective if you can lead your colleagues collaboratively. This lesson focuses on the definition of collaborative leadership and reviews how to set norms of collaboration early on to create a cohesive, well-functioning team. It also addresses how to respond when your team is not collaborating effectively. Lesson 2b- Building a High Functioning Team Teams typically go through a series of stages in the course of working together that can be difficult to negotiate if you don t anticipate them. In this lesson, the focus is on how you as a teacher leader can lead your team through Tuckman s Stages of Team Development effectively with concrete actions at each stage to enhance collaboration and productivity. Lesson 3a- Data Analysis and Action Planning In a turnaround school, there is an urgent need to analyze classroom level data on a short timeline and decide how you are going to adjust instruction. In this lesson, you will learn how to lead a focused and productive data analysis meeting with your team that results in concrete action steps for all team members to take in their classrooms. Lesson 3b- Data Driven Lesson Planning One of the key steps that teachers need to take during and after a data team meeting is adjusting their instructional plans to meet individual student and classroom level learning goals. This lesson will focus on how you, as a teacher leader, coach team members through a data driven lesson planning process, provide feedback, and monitor the implementation of lesson plans. Lesson 4a- Effective Observations and Feedback One of the most powerful ways that teacher leaders drive instructional change in turnaround schools is by conducting frequent classroom observations and providing actionable feedback. This lesson focuses on how you as a teacher leader can conduct more effective observations and deliver feedback that leads to improved instructional practice.
7 Lesson 4b- Effective Modeling and Co-Teaching Many teacher leaders drive instructional change by modeling instructional practices and by co-teaching with the teachers on their teams. This lesson provides a framework for effective modeling and coteaching that is designed to improve team teacher s practice. Lesson 5a- Time Management Time management is a perennial problem for most professionals, but it can be especially challenging for teachers who take on leadership roles in turnaround schools. This lesson provides tools that you as a teacher leader can use to manage your time more effectively, including assessing how you currently use your time during the school day. Lesson 5b- Finding Balance Being a teacher is hard. Being a teacher leader is even more challenging, so this lesson is designed to make sure you are up to the challenge! Ensuring you stay balanced throughout the school year is crucial to staying productive, energized, healthy, and focused. There will be setbacks, but maintaining your balance will help you be more resilient and bounce back stronger.
