2 California Chafee Grant Program For youth aging out of foster care or emancipated from foster for care College Education Training Voucher (ETV) of up to $5,000 per academic year Federal funds awarded to the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) administrates the program 2
3 Basic Eligibility Requirements Eligible for California Independent Living Program Services (ILP): Anytime between their 16 th and 18 th birthday New applicants on July 1 of the award year must be: At least 16 Not over 22 Continuing students can renew their awards: Through 23 rd birthday 3
4 Basic Eligibility (continued) College or vocational (Title IV) school Participates in Federal Pell Grant Program Program length of at least one academic year Minimum half-time enrollment Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress Must demonstrate financial need 4
5 Basic Eligibility (continued) Students are not required to: Have a Social Security Number (SSN) Meet Selective Service requirements Be clear of loan default or grant over-award Meet Ability to Benefit (ATB) requirements Be a CA resident or go to CA school 5
6 1-2-3 Application Components 1. Student completes the Chafee Grant Program Application 2. Student files a FAFSA 3. CDSS confirms Chafee Educational Training Voucher (ETV) eligibility 6
7 Chafee Grant Program Application Student completes the Chafee Grant Program Application Complete and submit on-line: or Submit paper application Rolling Application Students should submit during their senior year in High School. 7
8 California Student Aid Commission Specialized Programs Operations Branch California Chafee Grant Program P.O. Box Rancho Cordova, CA Telephone To apply, you must submit the following two forms either via online or paper application: Chafee Grant application online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) If you prefer, you may print and submit the paper version of the Chafee Grant Application (paper version) and complete the paper FAFSA. You can download the FAFSA at or call toll free to have one mailed to you. (If you don t have a Social Security number or are an undocumented student, contact the Commission for assistance.) To learn more, read the Chafee Grant Fact Sheet or contact your high school counselor, college s financial aid office, county or college Independent Living Coordinator, One-Stop Career Center, social worker or probation officer. If you ve applied for a Chafee Grant, go to WebGrants for Students to check on the status of your application. Already have a Chafee Grant? Your Chafee Grant may be renewed through your 23rd birthday. To renew your grant, you ll need to complete the FAFSA but you don t need to submit another Chafee Grant application. If you have moved, changed your name or transferred to another school, please call the Commission toll free at or complete the Chafee Grant Update and Change Form and mail it to the Commission: 8
