1 EARLY ENTRANCE TO KINDERGARTEN PROCESS PROCEDURES 1. Parents may obtain the Early Entrance application by scheduling an informational meeting with the building principal and a kindergarten teacher. The meeting may be scheduled during the school year, but no later than June Applications may be made any time after May 1 of the year the parent or guardian wishes the child to enter school and must be submitted no later than July The parent will schedule an evaluation for the child with a licensed psychologist of their choice at no cost to the school district. 4. The parent selected psychologist will conduct an assessment as outlined in the criteria section of this document. 5. The parent selected psychologist will provide a written report of findings and recommendations to the Director of Special Services. 6. Children who meet the assessment and other criteria may enroll for a six-week trial period to determine the appropriateness of the placement. During this trial period, the student s cognitive abilities, motor development, as well as social and emotional maturity will be observed and compared with previous assessment findings. A staffing with the parent will be held to review the appropriateness of the placement. The principal, school psychologist, and teacher will determine the appropriateness of the placement and may either continue the placement or change the placement to a more appropriate setting. REQUIRED CRITERIA 1. Birth date after September 1 but no later than October Mental age assessed to be within the very superior range (I.Q. 130+), using standardized instrument, e.g., Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Differential Abilities Scales or Wechsler Preschool Primary Scales of Intelligence (latest norms). 3. Superior fine and gross motor coordination as determined by an adaptive measure, e.g., Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales. 4. Superior social maturity to be in the superior range/99 th percentile on an adaptive behavior measure, e.g., Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, Scales of Independent Behavior, ABAS (latest norms). 5. Completion of health forms, physical and required immunizations. 6. Completion of Early Childhood Screening. 7. Recommendation by psychologist who completed the evaluation. RECOMMENDED reading enclosed material schedule a visit to an ISD 833 kindergarten classroom 7. Parents who disagree with the findings of the school staff may appeal the decision in writing to the Director of Special Services. The final decision shall rest with the Superintendent of Schools.

4 The Minnesota Legislature has provided funds to make it possible for families to pay tuition using a sliding fee scale. TO APPLY: 1.
