1 S.C. Schools, Colleges, Local Governments and Agencies to Share $67 Million in Recovery Act Funding for Energy Efficiency Improvements To obtain funding, school districts, colleges and agencies must apply to the S.C. Energy Office. Applications and guidelines will be available by April 30. Eligible projects include retrofits for energy efficient lighting, heating and air conditioning systems, and energy management systems. Other types of energy cost-saving projects will be eligible as well. Under the terms of the federal stimulus legislation, South Carolina s ten largest cities and ten largest counties will receive a total of $22 million in direct grants from the U.S. Department of Energy. These governments must apply directly to the federal government for these funds by June 25. All smaller cities and counties in South Carolina will be eligible to compete for $5.7 million in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funds administered by the Board s Energy Office, which will partner with the state s ten Councils of Governments in administering the grants. Applications and guidelines will be available by May 29. The funds will support energy efficiency improvements in government buildings. An additional $13 million in energy stimulus funds flowing through the S.C. Energy Office will be used for energy job training, residential energy efficiency evaluation and assessment, and renewable energy. Further details will be announced later. Separate federal funding for weatherization programs is being managed by the Governor s Office of Executive Policy and Programs. About the South Carolina Energy Office The Budget and Control Board s South Carolina Energy Office (SCEO) provides a broad range of resources designed to help citizens, businesses and public entities save energy and money. In recent years, the SCEO has helped save South Carolina over $250 million through public and private energy-saving measures and new energy technologies. This program will have a very positive impact for both public budgets and the environment. The economic impact will also be significant because most funds will be used to buy goods and services in the private sector.
