Component Modeling Approach CMA & The 2008 Title-24 Update Webinar Presentation Jan. 28, 2010 Agenda Overview of Component Modeling Approach Using CMA for Title-24 Compliance CMAST Overview The CMA Program Status Q/A and Discussion 2
CMA & The 2008 Title-24 Update Host National Fenestration Rating Council Heschong Mahone Group Presenter Mudit Saxena, Sr. Project Manager, Heschong Mahone Group Discussion Panel Nelson Pena, California Energy Commission Charlie Curcija, CARLI, Inc. Mudit Saxena Heschong Mahone Group 3 Overview Overview of Component Modeling Approach Using CMA for Title-24 Compliance CMAST Overview The CMA Program Status 4
Overview Overview of Component Modeling Approach 5 What is CMA? Why was CMA developed? Why use CMA? Benefits of choosing CMA CMA Software Tool (CMAST) Using CMA for Title-24 Compliance CMAST Overview The CMA Program Status Component Modeling Approach What is it? A new performance rating method from NFRC Generates accurate, project-specific performance ratings, using an approved software (CMAST) Eliminates the need for lab-testing of a product sample. 6
Component Modeling Approach Components are lab tested individually, upfront. Available on an online database Frames Spacers Glazing Users build their own configuration in the CMA Software Tool (CMAST), then hit CALCULATE to get: U-factor SHGC VT of the whole fenestration product 7 Why was CMA developed? In 1999 NFRC developed the Non-Residential Site-Built Certification Program 8 Referenced in California Title-24 Energy Code: 2001, 2005 & 2008 Challenges of the Program: Required lab testing a sample before obtaining ratings Limited the scope of size and configuration No real-time access to information In 2002 NFRC initiated Component Modeling Approach (CMA) Program To address some of the limitations of Site-Built program
Component Modeling Approach Why use CMA? 2008 Title-24, Part 6 (as of Jan 1 st 2010) approved the use of CMA for: non-residential (inc. High Rise Res) site-built fenestration Utilize accurate U, SHGC values instead of the punitive CEC Default values (Table 116 A,B or NA6) CMA makes the process simple and efficient for now, may be expanded in the future 9 Advantages of CMA Saves Time 10 Lab testing/simulation of components done in advance Faster turn-around of Label Certificate (LC) web-based Approved components do not require re-certification Approved LCs can be re-used with minor modifications Reduces Cost Eliminates lab testing of sample fenestration Increases Convenience Try out multiple options - Pre-bid report option available A single label certificate for all fenestration in a project Simplifies compliance documentation
Advantage of CMA cont. Increases Accuracy Compared to punitive CEC default values CMAST program can provide an EnergyPlus output file DOE2 output file is being developed Maximizes Envelope Energy Efficiency Compare energy performance of fenestration products Allows bidding, quoting and research on options Obtain credit for high performance fenestration products in Title-24 energy compliance 11 CMA Software Tool (CMAST) Core Functions Maintain database of approved component data Define projects Assemble components, and Calculate whole product ratings 12
CMA Software Tool (CMAST) Quick turn-around no lab testing Real-time web-based access Bidding, quoting research capability Create a CMA LC Label Certificate 13 CMA Software Tool (CMAST) Can be downloaded for a free 6-month trial Software support: cmast_support@designbuildersoftware.com Phone:
Overview Overview of Component Modeling Approach Using CMA for Title-24 Compliance Types of fenestration that can use CMA 2 ways to show compliance Illustrative example The CMA process CMA Label Certificate Acceptance requirement CMAST Overview The CMA Program Status 15 CMA in Title Title approved the use of CMA for Nonresidential projects inc. high-rise residential Site-built fenestration is fenestration designed to be field-glazedor field assembled using specific factory cut or otherwise factory formed framing and glazing units Any size total fenestration area irrespective of whether total fenestration area is < or > than 10,000sf 16
Site-built fenestration Field-fabricated fenestration Field-fabricatedis a fenestration product whose frame is made at the construction site of standard dimensional lumber or other materials that werenot previously cut, or otherwise formedwith the specific intentionof being used to fabricate a fenestration product. Site-Built is fenestration designed to be field-glazed or field assembledusing specific factory cutor otherwise factory formed framing and glazing units. Can use CMA in Title Commercial Site-Built Fenestration Three Ways to Comply with Title : 1. CEC Default Values (Tables 116-A & B) Tables 116 A & B: Worst Approach(least energy credit) 2. CEC Default Values (NA6) Calculated Thermal Performance - NA6: Barely Acceptable Approach(some energy credit) Only for <10,000sf vertical glazing area 3. NFRC Values (Site-Built or CMA) Best Approach(most energy credit) Nonresidential Compliance Manual Section 3.2 New to Title
Example A building is using a Viracon Solarscreen Low-E Insulating Glass (VE 4-2M) with metal frame for a curtain wall. Calculate window performance values: 19 U-factor SHGC VT Using CEC Default Tables (116-A, 116-B) Calculated Thermal Performance (NA6) CMA Center of glass values 20 Note: these values cannot be used for Title-24 compliance purposes
1. Using CEC Default Tables A double pane, metal frame, site-built curtain wall will get a U- factor of 0.71 from the default table Note: footnotes that adjust for Low e and airspace in 2005 have been removed in 2008 version Using CEC Default Tables A double pane, metal frame, site-built curtain wall will get a SHGC of 0.60 from the default table Updated SHGC from 0.73 to.60 to reflect that this glazing product is tinted, on
Comparing Results ViraconSolarscreenLow-E Insulating Glass (VE 4-2M) with metal frame CECDefault Tables 2 U-Factor 0.71 SHGC VT 0.72 Calculated Thermal Performance 3 Percent difference (from CEC Default Tables) CMA Percent difference (from CEC Default Tables) 1 Updated SHGC from 0.73 to.60 to reflect that this glazing product is tinted, on CEC Default value for VT is calculated separately using a formula in NA5 Envelope Tradeoff Procedure: VT = SHGC x Calculated Thermal Performance can only be used for projects with <10,000sf vertical glazing Using Calculated Thermal Performance (NA6) 24
2. Using Calculated Thermal Performance (NA6) Using Calculated Thermal Performance (NA6) U T = C 1 + (C 2 x U C ) U T = (0.872 x 0.29) U T = 0.56 SHGC T = (0.86 x SHGC C ) SHGC T = (0.86 x 0.26) SHGC T =

CMA Process DESIGN PHASE An Architect, energy consultant or a window contractor use CMAST to create a virtual model of the proposed fenestration product. A pre-bid certificate can be generated at this time for use in soliciting bids and for energy calculations by the energy consultant 35 CMA Process FIELD INSPECTION PHASE During this phase, an architect or an owners agent contacts an NFRC ACE to generate a CMA Label Certificate. Title-24 requires that the CMA Label Certificate be posted on-site for field inspection 36
37 CMA Process CMAST DEVELOPMENT An IA approves components (glazings, frames, spacers) before they are available for use in CMA Label Certificate An IA is also responsible for spot review of CMA Label Certificates generated by an ACE CMA Process ACE : Approved Calculation Entity Trained by NFRC on use of CMAST to ensure QA Conducts performance rating calculations using CMAST Generates the final CMA Label Certificate IA : Independent Certification and Inspection Agency Trained by NFRC on testing procedures of components Reviews simulation laboratory and test laboratory reports Reviews calculation reports prepared by ACE Conducts random trail audits of CMA Label Certificates 38
