More Stuck in American chronic poverty How I saved $50,000 on college costs With fewer Americans receiving health care coverage through their employers, government-funded programs like Medicare, Medicaid, military health care, the Children's Health Care Program (CHIPS) and coverage offered by various states have had to pick up the slack. These three students saved themselves tens of thousands of dollars -- and a lifetime of debt -- by pursuing less conventional approaches to college. More In 2010, 31% of Americans relied on the government for health insurance, up from 24.2% in Dear Mr. President... Business owners tell us the one thing they'd ask Obama to do to make hiring easier. More Many of the new government beneficiaries are children, according to Gould. Still, Census reported that 9.8% of children under age 18 are uninsured despite the government programs targeting them like CHIPS and Medicaid, which is also open to their parents. Adults without dependent children, however, are not eligible for Medicaid in most states under federal rules, said Rachel Garfield, a senior researcher on the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured. It's this group that accounts for a large portion of the increase in the uninsured. The Dunkin' Donuts diaries Dunkin' brands has gone public again. Some highlights from its complex and tasty history. More Nearly one-in-four working-age adults are uninsured, said Gould. She said it won't be until 2014, when Obama's health care plan kicks in, that more people will be able to find affordable health care coverage. Among the states, Texas had the highest percentage of uninsured; at 24.6%. Still, it was an improvement from the 26.1% who were uninsured in New Mexico had the second highest rate of uninsured people with 21.6%. Nevada was third at 21.3% and Mississippi's rate jumped to 21.1% from 17.3% in Despite being home to a high percentage of retirees, many of whom are covered by Medicare, Florida had an uninsured rate of 20.8% down from 21.7% in In Massachusetts, where former governor Mitt Romney instituted his controversial state-wide health insurance plan in 2006, only 5.6% of the population lacks coverage, the lowest rate of uninsured of any state. I thought Obamacare was supposed to FIX THIS??? OMG the humanity! dchapm34me, 29 minutes ago I think we could save money by opening socialized walk in clinics at all the fast food restaurants. The burger flippers/doctors could pick up a few extra bucks at night by taking care of patients and we could reduce overhead by splitting the building costs with the restaurant!! Wal Mart could also offer cheap and easy heart transplants, bypass surgery, and the like all in the name of reducing cost!! WOW America we must be... show more RINOVT, 31 minutes ago The big issue here is cost. No-one asks the fundamental question of why US health care is twice (or more) expensive than elsewhere. A universal single payer system that everyone contributes to could cover everybody at half the price, just like in most civilized countries. So what's the objection? Oh yes, we'd prefer to be ripped off by the private sector, who of course have our best interests in mind, than have "the gumint" run... show more

4 tpe, 21 minutes ago in reply to RINOVT Most people still receive health care from either their employer, military, or Medicare. These people are insulated from the cost and don't see any problem with our system. At the point where most Americans are no longer covered by employers and have to choose between going uninsured or paying their own premiums I believe you will see a shift in attitude toward a universal system similar to other developed countries. That's why we will never have universal health care. ipmutt, 32 minutes ago If you can not pay for insurance you don't get insurance. If you don't like it, go home. The way insurnace works is you pay more than you use. It is not a money saving product. After you pay for a long time, you have money saved a big bill comes, you have money to pay for it. If you want free medical coverage start looking in dark alleys. pianobarb, 33 minutes ago Our health ins. premiums will continue to rise till we get rid of all these "for profit" insurance companies. They are the ultimate middle man. All they care about is their bottom line... not people's health. We need a single payer system. We pay $1,400 a month for our premuims and still have that 10% or 20% plus co-pays. I would be thrilled if our monthly premiums were $ One... show more kzimm63, 34 minutes ago Not sure why the Tea Party is so big on protecting millionaires and billionaires???
