2 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY Thornlie Christian College has strict guidelines governing student access to the College Network and the Internet. Every student should be aware of the Acceptable Use Policy as shown below. Together with online monitoring of student access to websites and the dynamic blocking of inappropriate, offensive or non-educational websites, TCC ensures that the Internet is used as an effective learning resource. Acceptable Use: The College Network and Internet access is provided to students for educational purposes only. Use of Student Home drives/ Student / Edmodo accounts or any College storage is for Educational material only. Teachers and College Staff have access to student s files in their directories/accounts for academic and security reasons Students are not permitted to download material to any other directories/accounts. Usenet groups, Chat, non-college , Telnet, Bulletin Boards are not available to students without permission from the network supervisors. Publications dealing with illegal activities, pornography or extreme violence are not to be accessed or downloaded. Use of commercial activities (advertising, buying or selling) is not permitted. Use of another organisation's networks or computing services must comply with rules appropriate to that network. Any other activity which may be deemed detrimental to the College s learning environment or equipment. Education Only Access to the Internet through the College computing devices, student BYOD and Chromebooks at Thornlie Christian College is permitted for educational purposes - as prescribed by courses of study at Thornlie Christian College and is subject to these conditions: It is a condition of use that users comply with the requirements stated in this policy.

3 Failure to meet these conditions will result in loss of access to the Internet via College computing devices. Follow the Rules or Penalties Will Apply Students are bound by these rules, as conditions of the College, and further action within the College Behaviour Management Policy may be taken if deemed appropriate. It remains the right of staff at Thornlie Christian College to refuse access to any user to the Internet/College Network or to any computer within the College. Thornlie Christian College reserves the right to keep transcripts of any or all data carried through the network. Be aware that monitoring software is used to permanently record the time, date and computer number of any computer accessing inappropriate Web sites through the College network. No Offensive Material Accessing undesirable or offensive material is not permitted. This includes, but is not exclusive to: any material portraying, describing or otherwise involving pornography, obscene language or violence. using facilities provided by certain Web sites to produce and broadcast material which is slanderous to staff or students. As a guide only, this is any material that would not be considered appropriate for viewing by the general community in a public place. No Illegal Material Accessing illegal material or material describing criminal activities is not permitted. Conducting criminal acts or using the network for the organisation of criminal acts is not permitted. This includes, but is not exclusive to: computer crime, malicious damage or intent, fraud, harassment or hacking. any users involved in illegal activities will be reported to appropriate authorities. The College reserves the right to allow access, for the purposes of criminal investigation, to any network data transcripts taken. Cyber-bullying Using the College Network to defame any person is not permitted. (Generally, defamation occurs when a person publishes a statement or media that harms or damages the reputation or standing of another person within the community. A statement is published once it is known by a third person.) This includes but is not exclusive to:

4 Defamatory mobile phone messages. Defamatory messages. Defamatory web pages. Defamatory use of programmes such as Usenet groups, Chat-rooms, , Telnet, Bulletin Boards etc. Cyber-bullying will be dealt with in accordance with the College Bullying Policy. The College will use its discretion in deciding when Cyber-bullying that has occurred off-campus begins to impact on members within the College community and what the appropriate response will be. Bring Your Own Device Voluntary (BYODV) & Chromebooks Students using College required Chromebooks (Years 3-9) or taking part in the BYODV scheme (Years 10-12) are subject to the above acceptable use policy (and the BYODV Acceptable Use Policy). BYODV Years 10 to 12 The BYODV allows, with parental permission, students to bring their own device (laptop or tablet) to school so that they can work seamlessly between home and school as they engage in the learning processes prepared for them by their teachers. How does the BYODV Work? Thornlie Christian College will continue to provide laptops and desktops as usual for any student who does not participate in the BYODV Scheme (although students are strongly encouraged to do so). All work expected by teachers will still be able to be done on the devices provided by the College Students who take part in the BYODV scheme will be required to sign this BYODV Appropriate Use Agreement (Separate Form Available) and parents need to sign giving permission. The device will need to be approved and registered with IT administration and will be identified with a Registration Sticker. Students will only be able to register one device. Students will need to return a BYODV Appropriate Use Agreement to Student Services. Parents and Students will then be informed when to bring in their device for registration with the College Network. Students

5 Using BYO Devices and Chromebooks At all times teachers will determine as to whether a student s personal device (including the Chromebook) may be used in their class for each particular lesson, or part of a lesson. They will also determine how the device may be used to best help the student engage in the learning process. Limitations and Expectations The current policy for mobile phones in the secondary school will continue and so the use of the term devices in this document does not include mobile phones. The devices will not be able to have 3G/4G connectivity but must have Wi-Fi capability. This is to ensure that while at school students have to connect through the TCC Wi-Fi system so that that they are accessing the Internet through the College s Internet filtering system. The Wi-Fi system will only allow TCC registered devices to access the College Intranet/Internet. If a student doesn t bring their device on any given day or lesson, they will still have access to the College s devices as usual. Loan units will be available through the Library for part of or all of the school day. Students will be expected to charge their devices/chromebooks at home. Students may keep their device on their person or in their locker ( in the classroom in Primary) while at College but must take them home on completion of the school day. Students will not be able use their devices/chromebooks during break times except in the College Library or while under direct supervision by a teacher. Parents will be expected to monitor content resident on their child s device/chromebook ensuring that it does not breach the College s IT Acceptable Use Policy. Support for the BYODV Scheme will be provided for parents via a link on the College website. Insurance As with all student/ (parent) owned devices that are currently brought to school, appropriate insurance may be something that parents wish to acquire. The College will take reasonable care to minimise the possibility of theft or damage but ultimately will not be liable should such occur.
