2 ARTS PSYCHOTHERAPIES TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION, BPD AND SCHIZOPHRENIA Arts Psychotherapies Practice in Mental Health Care Recent research draws attention to the need to address mental health as a neglected priority in international health and development economics and confirm that the evidence supporting interventions for the care, treatment and rehabilitation of people with mental illness is robust. This is not only a public health and human rights priority, it is also a development priority and not only in low to middle income countries, but for all us. There does exist evidence-based research that we can build upon and the ICAPT have demonstrated this by building upon existing evidence in the area of mentalization. Practice informing research, and research informing practice are an inseparable team and neither element is complete on its own. The Arts Therapies need the full range of research, from systematic reviews, to RCTs, to ethnographic qualitative research but we also need the thoughtful practitioner who carefully describes each unique patient, and evaluates the results of every clinical decision made. This training opportunity offers practitioners an opportunity to learn about mentalization but also to contribute to the growing body of 21st century research in the Arts Therapies. DR. MARGARET HILLS DE ZÁRATE 2
3 GENERAL INFORMATION ARTS PSYCHOTHERAPIES TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION, BPD AND SCHIZOPHRENIA 1ST SCOTTISH TRAINING FOR INTERPERSONAL AND MENTALIZATION BASED ARTS PSYCHOTHERAPIES Dates: Venue: Tuesday 25th February, Wednesday 26th February Thursday 27th February 9.15 am 4.30 pm on all days Gillis Centre, 100 Strathearn Road, Edinburgh, EH9 1BB Tel. No Website: Who is the training for? Art Psychotherapists, Dramatherapists & Music Therapists working in mental health settings Organisation: The event is being run by ICAPT (International Centre for Arts Psychotherapies Training in Mental Health) part of Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with Dr. Margaret Hills de Zarate, Queen Margaret University. As an NHS led initiative the trainings highlight innovative and evidence based practice in health care settings. 3
4 Mentalization Based Arts Psychotherapies Mentalization based treatment (MBT) is an innovative form of psychodynamic psychotherapy, developed and manualised by Peter Fonagy and Anthony Bateman. MBT has been designed for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), who suffer from disorganised attachment and fail to develop a mentalisation capacity within the context of an attachment relationship. The training also explores methods of using a mentalization based approach with psychotic disorders. Fonagy and Bateman suggest that mentalization is the process by which we implicitly and explicitly interpret the actions of oneself and others as meaningful on the basis of intentional mental states. Arts Psychotherapies MBT model, focuses on the re-representations (image, sound, movement, narrative) of self and other and alternative perspectives that underpin affect regulation and interpersonal dynamics. Verbal interactions in the context of arts psychotherapies practice will also be explored. A mentalization based approach supports Art Psychotherapists, Music Therapists and Dramatherapists in their work with patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, psychotic disorders or closely aligned conditions.
5 Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Arts Psychotherapists Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) is an empirically validated treatment for mild to moderate depression. It is recognised as an effective psychotherapy by the Department of Health. As a time limited treatment DIT is typically a 16 week intervention. It takes its structure from psychodynamic psychotherapy with a particular focus on attachment, interpersonal, developmental and mentalization theory. DIT addresses relationships and recurring relational patterns where mentalizing is significantly reduced and bases its theoretical premise on the connection between interpersonal relationships and psychological symptomatology. DIT uses a range of psychodynamic competenices, which the course will cover such as: Through an explorative use of arts mediums, identifying the relationship between symptomatology and current relational patterns To encourage reflexivity and mentalizating - the capacity to conceive and perceive self-other intentional states of mind Role Play of interpersonal interventions through use of Arts Psychotherapies The day integrates established principles of psychodynamic arts psychotherapies, whilst focussing on the interpersonal relationships.
