13 Novell File Reporter Engine Quick Look Stores scans in the database Schedules the scans that the NFR Agents conduct Processes the scans and compiles them for inclusion in a report Runs scheduled reports Manages scan delegations to NFR Agents Sends notifications that Novell File Reporter has completed a scan or generated a report 13

17 Server Recommendations NFR Engine The following server platforms are supported: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, or 2012 R2 The following desktop platforms may be used for evaluations/pocs Sufficiently enabled 64-bit Windows 7 or Windows 8 Minimum memory in all cases: 16 GB 17

18 Field Recommendations Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 Windows 2008 will be deprecated in future versions of NFR 1 to 50 scan targets (volumes): 16 GB of RAM Greater than 50 scan targets: Consider 32 GB of RAM Use separate engine and database servers. Install agents on servers closest to the storage. Avoid proxy agent scanning if possible. 18

19 Database Considerations: MS SQL Windows Server 2008 R2*, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2 Minimum of 8 GB (16 GB is peachy) Hard drive space: 8.9 GB for the installation + 2kb per file system entry For instance, if you are supporting 50 Million files, you would require 50 Million x 2kb, or an additional 1 GB of storage Use dedicated disk (disk I/O is very important) 19

21 NFR Agent Considerations Windows Windows Server 2003 R2 or higher (32 or 64 bit) Windows workstation 7 or 8 (64 bit) Linux Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 SP2 or higher (32- or 64-bit) Novell Open Enterprise Server 11 or higher (64-bit) For both OS s a minimum of 10 Gigabytes of free disk space Scan data is stored in /var during a scan 100 MB of RAM per concurrent scan 21

22 Installation Considerations Identity Systems The first Directory configured (AD or edir) will be used for authentication to NFR Rights A user will be needed during installation that has rights to create user and group objects in the Directory There is no need to extend the schema 22

24 Installation Steps: NFR with MS SQL Define DNS entries for the NFR Engine, the Database server (if a different machine) For Engine, entry of nfr is required Install and configure MS SQL Make sure to install MS.NET 3.51 first Choose the defaults for the installation, except: Select mixed mode authentication Enable the System Administrator (SA) account Run the installation for Novell File Reporter 24

27 MS SQL Authentication Mode On the Server Properties page, Click on Security. Click on the radio button next to SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode, and click on OK to close the Server Properties page 27

28 MS SQL System Administrator Account Right-click on the sa account and go to Login Properties. Specify a complex password for the sa account. By default, the Enforce password policy is checked. (if you don t want to provide a complex password for the sa account, you can uncheck this option. However, this is not recommended.) 28

32 File Reporter Proxy Accounts You must create proxy account and a proxy rights group for use by the agent and engine. 32

33 File Reporter Admins Group The admins group is used to control who can access the NFR reporting tool and authorize scans 33

34 SSL Certificate An SSL certificate is required. You may use your own certificate server, otherwise NFR will generate one. 34

35 Completing the Configuration The setup wizard will proceed with installing the Web application (IIS) extensions. If all four items are green, then you have successfully set up NFR. 35

36 Managing edirectory If you plan to manage (report on) volumes associated with an edirectory tree, you will need to install the Novell Client on the NFR engine. Novell File Reporter currently supports managing multiple edirectory trees as well as an AD forest on the same engine. 36

37 Managing Active Directory If you plan to manage (report on) Windows shares in an Active Directory environment, the engine server must be joined to a domain in the forest. Novell File Reporter currently supports managing multiple domains in a single Active Directory forest. 37

39 Common Problems Unable to scan Agent isn t running Proxy agent not defined Make sure nfr DNS entry is created Slow scans if engine & database are on same server: Don t do this. Put the engine on another server. If using Postgres, run it on Linux. 39
