1 Overview SAS 9.4 Installation Instructions Summary University of Massachusetts Site License June 2014 (TS1M1, Rev: 940_14w19) You will be downloading a zipped SAS Software Depot, which requires a SAS Installation Data file in order to install SAS software. Before doing anything else, contact OIT Help Center, room A109 LGRC, umsw.licenses@oit.umass.edu, or to sign a site license agreement, ensure you are getting the license appropriate for you, and pay your annual fee. You will then get your SAS Installation Data file by . SAS 9.4 installation does not replace SAS 9.3 or earlier installations. After you have confirmed successful installation of 9.4, uninstall earlier releases. If you are upgrading from SAS 9.1.3, you must uninstall it BEFORE its license expires! SAS/Spectraview has been "retired", and is not included in SAS 9.4. SAS Online Tutor has been replaced with online e-learning modules. GIS Tract maps are no longer shipped. You can use the ones from release 9.1.3, or import other map sources. Glossary SAS Software Depot is a centralized repository of files which can be used to install SAS software. You will be downloading a (zipped) SAS Software Depot. If you get USB drive (by special request, at additional cost), you can install SAS directly from the USB drive without creating a Software Depot. SAS Deployment Wizard is the interface used for SAS installation. It is used to manage a SAS Software Depot, or to install SAS software whether from a Depot or directly from USB drive. SAS Foundation is a combination of SAS Base and other licensed products installed together with SAS Base. The Deployment Wizard installs all licensed components of SAS Foundation. SAS Installation Data (SID) is a file that controls your installation by specifying the products included in the license, and your license expiration. You must get your SAS Installation Data file (valid for the current academic year) from OIT before you start installation. 64-bit SAS SAS 9.4 TS1M1 is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. With a 64-bit OS you can choose either 32-bit SAS 9.3 or 64-bit SAS 9.4 (or both!). Before deciding which software to download, consider the following compatibility issues: Formats catalogs are not compatible between 32-bit and 64-bit SAS. If you were previously using 32-bit SAS, you will need to migrate your formats catalogs, if you have any, to 64-bit SAS. This is also an issue if you need to share SAS formats catalogs with someone else who uses 32-bit SAS. Reading Excel or Access data created using 32-bit Office into 64-bit SAS requires SAS PC Files Server. Any SAS code you used in the past to import Excel or Access files to 32-bit SAS will need to be modified for use with 64-bit SAS. Make sure you have a recent version of Microsoft Access database engine. PC Files Server may hang if used with old Microsoft Access Database engine! See section on PC Files Server for more information. 1

2 Before you Start Get the SAS Installation Data (SID) file appropriate your SAS software use. call , or go to the OIT Help Center, in LGRC A109. For , you must use a valid UMASS account. You will be required to sign the site license agreement. Log on to your computer with Administrator privileges. Close all programs, including Anti-Virus and Firewall programs. The System Requirements Wizard may require you to restart your computer, possibly several times. Due to the recent proliferation of internet viruses, you might want to unplug your internet connection while your Anti-Virus programs are disabled. Creating the SAS Software Depot When you get the with your SAS Installation Data (license) file, download the corresponding sas software file. Extract the entire zip file to C:\ to create your SAS Software Depot. If you re using a domain-joined machine, do not extract to C:\Users. After extraction you should have a C:\SAS94_NNwNNType folder (where NNwNN is the SAS revision number, Type is TR or Admin). This is your SAS Software Depot. Store your SID file in the sid_files folder within the SAS Software Depot. If you have to copy/paste it, use a straight text editor, such as Notepad, and save the file with.txt extension. 2

3 Installing SAS Software from the SAS Software Depot 1. Start SAS Software Installation: Navigate to the SAS Software Depot directory. Right-click setup.exe and choose Run as Administrator. After the Select Language screen, it may take 5 or more minutes to get to the Select Deployment Task screen. Please be patient. 2. Select Deployment Task screen: Select Install SAS Software. Click Next. 3. Review Required Updates: Click Next. 4. Specify SAS Home screen: C:\Program Files\SASHome is the default installation location on systems that do not have previous SAS 9.3 or SAS 9.4 installations. If you do have previous installations, the default will be C:\Program Files\SASHome2. SAS 9.4 must be installed in a new location from previous versions of SAS. 3

4 5. Select Deployment Type Select "Install SAS Foundation and Related Software". 6. Select Products to Install screen: Don t accept the default selection! SAS Foundation (not SAS Foundation Services) is the only product you must select. If you re installing 64-bit SAS and have 32-bit Office, be sure to select SAS PC Files Serverl. It is needed for reading and writing Excel and Access files. See section SAS Access Interface to PC Files for more information. All other products are optional. Leaving them selected will result in wasting a lot of hard disk space. 7. Select SAS Foundation Products: Select the products you wish to install. De-select SAS Enterprise Miner, SAS Text Analytics Common Components and SAS Text Miner, unless you really plan to use these. Click Next. 4

5 8. Specify SAS Installation Data File screen: If you stored your SID file (license) in the Software Depot's sid_files folder, the Deployment Wizard will locate it automatically. If not, browse to your saved SID file. The name of your license file (and the expiration dates displayed), will differ from the example shown below. 9. Language Support: Click Clear All, to remove all foreign languages, leaving English as the default. Click Next. 10. Select Regional Settings: Click Next 11. SAS PC Files Server System Service Option: This screen only appears if you selected SAS PC Files Server in step 6. Start Service Now and Automatically when Windows Starts option is recommended. 5

6 12. SAS PC Files Server Port: This screen only appears if you selected SAS PC Files Server in step 6. The default port, 9621, is recommended. See section SAS Access Interface to PC Files for more information on this choice. 13. Checking system: You may be prompted to restart your machine. If so, checking will continue after the restart, but there may be a long wait with nothing on screen. Please be patient. After successful check, click Next. 14. Deployment Summary screen displays the products selected for installation for final approval. Click Start to begin deployment. If your system requires updates, follow the instructions. You may need to restart the system after system updates. Deployment may take half an hour or more to complete. 15. Deployment Complete screen: There should be a green check next to each item to indicate successful software installation. 6

7 SAS/Access Interface to PC Files The Excel and Access engines of SAS/Access Interface to PC Files are used to import and export files from/to Microsoft Excel or Access. These engines require that SAS and Microsoft Office be of the same bit type. When they are not, you can use SAS PC Files Server to negotiate file exchange between 64-bit SAS and 32-bit Microsoft Office data (Excel or Access). Warning: PC Files Server sometimes hangs when importing over a network drive if you do not have a recent version of Microsoft Access Database engine. To get the latest version, go to At Download, select AccessDatabaseEngine.exe, NOT AccessDatabaseEngine_64.exe. How to tell whether your Office is 32-bit or 64-bit: If you have Office 2007 or earlier, it is 32- bit. If you have Office 2010, Open one of your Office products, such as Excel. Select Help on the left. Look under About Excel on the right. It will display the version and bits of your Office product. SAS Office Use PC Files Server? 32-bit 32-bit No 64-bit 64-bit No 64-bit 32-bit Yes If you have 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Office, you can either: install SAS 9.3, 32-bit - in this case your SAS will run as a 32-bit application, and PC file import/export will work as in previous SAS releases. install SAS 9.4, 64-bit - this will take advantage of your 64-bit operating system, but in order to exchange files between SAS and Office you must select PC Files Server in step 6 of your SAS installation. Further, you will need to modify any existing PROC IMPORT code to use the EXCELCS and ACCESSCS engines instead of the EXCEL and ACCESS engines. If you use the LIBNAME and SET statements to import Office files, you must use the PCFILE engine. (Note that PC Files Server installed is 32-bit. It needs to match the installed Office, not SAS or your operating system. ) SAS PC Files Server is a Windows service that starts automatically. If you install SAS PC Files server using the recommended default port (9621), you do not need to specify the port or server options. See for more about using SAS PC Files Server. Example 1: Import Excel file from 32-bit Office to 64-bit SAS. Note use of EXCELCS. Note use of PCFILE engine. libname in pcfiles path="drive:\path\test2.accdb"; data test2; set in.tablename; * (Access table name must be valid SAS name) ; run; libname in clear; 7

8 Post Installation SAS Institute regularly issues Hot Fixes. If you encounter a problem that you believe is a software bug, be sure to check the Hot Fix website to see whether a fix has been issued. For instructions on installing and downloading the latest Service Packs or other Hot Fixes, go to SAS Help and Documentation and HTML output from the Output Delivery System require Firefox 6 (32-bit), or Internet Explorer 9 (32-bit) using Windows 7, and Firefox 6 or Internet Explorer 10 using for Window 8. If you are new to SAS, consider registering for SAS e-learning - a set of online, self-paced lessons, designed to introduce SAS programming to new users, or more advanced techniques to those with some experience. SAS e-learning requires you to register at the e-learning website. Information needed to register for the products included with the University site license is available on request. This is for users with programming background, who are new to SAS programming. This is for experienced SAS users who want a quick introduction to what's new. Installation Qualification Tool If you have any doubt about the success of your SAS installation, you can use the Installation Qualification Tool. To start Installation Qualification, click Start Programs SAS Utilities SAS Installation Qualification Tool Recovering Disk Space After successful installation, you can delete the downloaded zip file, and regain about 22GB of disk space. Do NOT delete the extracted SAS Software Depot, which is useful if you ever need to modify your installed products. 8
