3 Throughout California the refrain is the same: We Need More Highly Skilled STEM Workers! California has the 3 rd highest unemployment rate in the nation, however, it has 1.5 open jobs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields for every qualified job seeker. In a state with nearly one million STEM workers and an expected 19% growth rate in STEM jobs over the next decade, we are only producing about 21,000 STEM bachelors degrees annually. 18 COE Transfer Admissions Criteria Minimum 60 transferable semester units completed Minimum 3.5 GPA (Fall 2015 admissions) 100% completion of required courses on Assist.org prior to transferring (IGETC not accepted) Complete as many "strongly recommended" courses as possible on Assist.org (to be a stronger candidates for admission and better prepared for engineering success) Courses must be completed by the end of the spring semester of the year in which you will transfer (summer courses are not counted)

19 Engineering Admissions We utilize the same screening process for all applicants regardless of major Students must apply for the major they re interested in; transfer students may NOT change majors once admitted We are looking for evidence in an application that a student could manage taking several technical courses a semester since we re a full-time program.

24 UC Prompts for Personal Statement: 1) What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities and what you have gained from your involvement. 2) Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

25 Tips for Personal Statement How did you become interested in engineering? Why are you interested in the major to which you re applying? What excites you about studying this major? What experiences influenced your decision to pursue engineering? What experiences, such as co-curricular activities, have you had that relate to engineering? What non-engineering related activities have you participated in? What skills did you learn from these experiences that will help you in engineering (i.e. leadership, time management, teamwork etc)? What are your goals, aspirations, and plans after graduation? Tip: Write statements specific enough to appeal to Berkeley Engineering while also being broad enough to appeal to other UC s to which you re applying.

27 Transfer Applicant Issues Seen for Fall 2014 Many applicants didn t list the course numbers and/or course names of completed course work on both the UC application and MyBerkeleyApp Many applicants left the co-curricular activities section blank or only listed high school activities on the UC application, but then talked about their current involvement in their personal statements These items may give an admissions reader the impression that you are not strong with details (which is important in engineering) or that you may not have taken the application serious
