1 INFORMATION FOR 2 nd TO 5 TH GRADE TEACHERS REGARDING DISTRICT-WIDE READING ASSESSMENT: August 20, 2012 SCHOLASTIC READING INVENTORY (SRI) - Testing Window: Aug. 28 th Sept. 28 th, 2012 Dear Second-Fifth Grade Teachers, Principals, and Literacy Specialists, Last year, OUSD began using the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) as a universal screener of reading comprehension in grades SRI is administered in either a paper & pencil or electronic (online) format. This year there will be three administrations of the SRI; Fall, Mid-Year, and Spring. The SRI measures a students level of reading comprehension and reports it in a Lexile score. SRI results can be used to determine our students reading progress over time, to target individual students who are in need of additional reading support, to match students to instructional and independent level text, and to provide information on the effectiveness of support and intervention programs. A student s Lexile score can be converted into a grade level equivalent that can aid parents and teachers in choosing instructional and independent reading material for students. Lexile scores will be used District-wide to measure systemic growth in reading over time. Lexile scores provide a quantitative dimension of students level of comprehension of complex text to support our transition to the Common Core Standards in ELA and a balanced approach to Literacy instruction. Paper& Pencil Format: The paper & pencil versions of the Fall SRI assessments will arrive at your school site by August 27th. Teacher booklets for administering the SRI assessment were included with your shipment. Edusoft answer sheets and teacher instruction packets will also be delivered to your school sites before the opening of the testing window. The paper & pencil version of the SRI assessment is designed to take forty to sixty minutes and should be administered to the whole class. Please refer to the SRI Teacher s Guide provided with your testing materials for more information on how to administer the assessment. Each teacher will determine if his/her students will fill out the corresponding bubble sheets or if the teacher will need to transfer the answers to the bubble sheet for students. After scanning the Edusoft answer sheets, the raw score will need to be converted to a lexile level using the conversion charts in this packet and on the ELA and RAD sections of the OUSD website. The test s level of difficulty automatically adjusts in response to students answers. Scores/lexile levels for the electronic version are available immediately upon completion of the test. Instructions for administering the electronic SRI will be ed to the principals/testing coordinators of the participating sites. Since the SRI is a comprehension screener, sites should not abandon diagnostic and progress monitoring assessments that are critical in informing instruction and planning interventions. The SRI will be used on the District level as a longitudinal measure of students reading progress from grades Site level diagnostic data should still be collected and used to inform daily instruction and intervention groupings. Contact Information: For questions with your student roster or to inquire about switching to the electronic version: Lars Jorgensen at [email protected] For questions about the paper and pencil tests, Edusoft answer sheets and reporting, or to request additional tests: [email protected]

3 FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) Q1: What is the SRI? SRI stands for Scholastic Reading Inventory. It is a research-based reading assessment that measures reading comprehension and reports it using the Lexile Framework for Reading. The SRI was introduced district wide in as a bi-annual universal screening of reading levels for all students in grades Q2: When is the SRI testing window? Starting in there will be three administrations of the SRI per year to measure initial, mid and end of year reading growth. Test Administration Testing Window Admin. 1 8/28 to 9/28 Admin. 2 1/8 to 2/15 Admin. 3 5/20 to 6/12 Q3: How is the SRI administered? The SRI is available in electronic and paper and pencil versions. Electronic version takes approximately minutes to complete. This version is computer-adaptive in that the level of difficulty automatically adjusts according to students answers. SUMMARY The SRI is administered to all students in grades 2-12 SRI is administered electronically or in a paper and pencil version SRI measures reading growth over time SRI scores can be used for placement in English and Reading Intervention Paper and pencil is available for elementary schools without adequate computer or internet access. Spanish bilingual assessments are also available. Q4: What is the Lexile Framework for Reading? The Lexile Framework for Reading is a scientific approach to reading comprehension and test measurement that measures the reader s ability and text difficulty in the same scale. The measure is reported as the reading ability or text difficulty followed by an L (e.g., 850L ). For example, a student at 100L is a beginning reader. A student at 1300L is ready for college reading. The SRI uses the developmental Lexile scale for a variety of texts (50% fiction and 50% non-fiction). Q5. How can we use SRI data? The following is a sample of how SRI can be used by a variety of stakeholders for a variety of purposes: Principals can use results to see if students are on target for making at least one years growth Grade level teams can use results to determine student intervention services Teachers can use results to inform daily instruction and provide leveled classroom libraries Parents can use results to find books that match their child s independent reading level Students can use results to choose books and set own goals for reading
4 FAQ Frequently Asked Questions Q6. How does the SRI align to Common Core State Standards? While the Scholastic Reading Inventory measures up to 1725L with reliability and accuracy, according to the Common Core State Standards, scales of text complexity should be anchored at texts that are representative of first-year college courses and workforce training programs, or about 1300L.
