3 Forword Higher education is one of the most important means of preparing human resources which are the main pillar of the advancement of all human societies. It is through higher education that each nation is able to fulfill its requirements for skilled manpower needed by the labor market and national development plans. The government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia realized the great importance of this matter at an early date, and so higher education in the Kingdom has achieved qualitative and quantitative leaps which have enable it to achieve the objectives of its ambitious development plans. During the reign of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, the number of universities in the Kingdom has increased from eight to an astonishing thirty-two institutions of higher learning distributed throughout the length and breadth of the nation, all within the short span of four years. This was accompanied by dramatic changes which came a as result of evaluation studies of the current situation of higher education in the Kingdom. 5 In its strategy for restructuring higher education in the Kingdom, the Ministry of Higher Education has relied upon two principles, namely achieving a geographical distribution of universities over all the regions of the country accompanied by an increase in the absorptive capacities of all institutions, and, secondly, the appropriateness of academic specializations to the national development plans as well as the demands of the labor market. MINISTRY OF HIGHER EDUCATION This book was compiled in order to provide those interested with the information they desire about the Kingdom's universities; its presents a guide to the academic specializations offered by each university at the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral levels for both men and women, in addition to concise information regarding the research centers, research chairs, and scholarly societies supported by each university, as well as the scholarly journals which each institution publishes. It is my hope that this volume will provide a vivid picture of higher education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia worthy of the great development which has taken place under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, the Crown rince and Second Deputy remier, and their wise government. 5 Umm Al-Qura University The University in Brief The beginnings of Umm Al-Qura University go back to the opening of the Shariah in Makkah al-mukarramah in 1949, making it the first higher educational institution in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was affiliated with the Ministry of Education. 10 Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University University Colleges The University in Brief Before the introduction of government-sponsored education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Shariah and Arabic studies were taught in most areas of the country in mosques and the homes of individual scholars. Then, in 1950, the Riyadh Academic Institute was founded, becoming the first of many such institutes to be established across the length and breadth of the Kingdom. Shortly thereafter, in 1952, the Shariah in Riyadh was opened, to be followed in 1953 by the Arabic Language in Riyadh. Academic institutes continued to be established across the Kingdom, and they were all governed by the General residency for Colleges and Academic Institutes. Finally, in 1974, the charter of Al-Imam University was approved as a higher educational and cultural institution, to include higher institutes, colleges, and academic institutes. The University has not ceased to expand since that time as new colleges have been set up. Moreover, the University is also responsible for institutes abroad for the teaching of Arabic and Islamic sciences in Mauritania, Djibouti, Indonesia, the United States of America, and Japan. In line with this policy of expansion, the University moved to its new campus at the commencement of the academic year This significant transition had a tremendous positive impact on the University as a whole, students, faculty and administrators alike. A total of 61 institutes are affiliated with Al-Imam University, distributed all across the country, in which the Islamic Shariah, the Arabic language, and social sciences are taught, side by side with foreign languages and computer science. The institutes are divided into two stages: a preparatory stage of three years duration, and a secondary stage of the same length. Al-Imam University belongs to several university organizations, including the Association of Arab Universities, the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World, of which it is a member of the executive committee, and the Association of Islamic Universities (member of the executive committee). It is also a member of a number of scholarly committees, such as the Institute for the History of Arab-Islamic Science in Frankfurt, Germany and the international scholarly committee of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies in the United Kingdom. The University supervises several academic institutions, including the International Islamic University in Islamabad, akistan, for which it serves as member of the Board of Trustees, the Islamic Thailand, and the Arabic Institute in Abadan, Nigeria. 14 Islamic University in Madinah University Colleges The University in Brief The Islamic University in Madinah is an international Islamic institution in its goals, and Saudi Arabian in its affiliation. Its aim is to spread the eternal message of Islam throughout the world through Da wah and university study, and to implant, develop and deepen the Islamic scientific spirit in the life of the individual and society. The University pursues a sober-minded methodology in the preparation, translation, publication and encouragement of academic studies in the branches of the Islamic and Arabic sciences in particular, and all other branches of human knowledge needed by the Islamic community.
