INVOCATION AND WELCOME Celebrant We gather in worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Celebrant welcomes the congregation. KYRIE ELEISON Please sit as the Choir sings the Kyrie and the altar is censed. FRANCESCO CAVALLI ( ) MESSA CONCERTATA GREEK TEXT PRAYER BOOK TEXT Lord have mercy Christ have mercy Lord have mercy Please stand. CONFESSION Deacon Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. Jesus said: This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself. Christ the Son of God has been revealed as a light to the nations. A silence for self-examination follows. Let us bring our darkness to his light, confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Celebrant Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5

GLORIA Sung by the Choir Please sit. LATIN TEXT Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. CAVALLI MESSA CONCERTATA PRAYER BOOK TEXT Glory to God in the highest and peace to God s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. COLLECT OF THE DAY Celebrant Let us pray. Eternal God, at the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son, and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: grant that all who are baptised into his name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Saviour; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. 6

FIRST READING A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 43: 1 7 But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. A short silence is observed. Reader For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. PSALM ` 29 Sung by the Choir to a chant by H. G. Ley. Bring unto the Lord, O ye mighty, bring young rams unto the Lord: ascribe unto the Lord worship and strength. Give the Lord the honour due unto his Name: worship the Lord with holy worship. It is the Lord, that commandeth the waters: it is the glorious God, that maketh the thunder. It is the Lord, that ruleth the sea; the voice of the Lord is mighty in operation: the voice of the Lord is a glorious voice. The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedar-trees: yea, the Lord breaketh the cedars of Libanus. He maketh them also to skip like a calf: Libanus also, and Sirion, like a young unicorn. The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shaketh the wilderness: yea, the Lord shaketh the wilderness of Cades. The voice of the Lord maketh the hinds to bring forth young, and discovereth the thick bushes: in his temple doth every man speak of his honour. The Lord sitteth above the water-flood: and the Lord remaineth a King for ever. The Lord shall give strength unto his people: the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. 7

SECOND READING A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 8: Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. A short silence is observed. Reader HYMN Please stand to sing. For the Word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. O Thou who camest from above, the pure celestial fire to impart, kindle a flame of sacred love on the mean altar of my heart. There let it for thy glory burn with inextinguishable blaze, and trembling to its source return in humble prayer, and fervent praise. Jesus, confirm my heart s desire to work, and speak, and think for thee; still let me guard the holy fire, and still stir up thy gift in me. Ready for all thy perfect will, my acts of faith and love repeat, till death thy endless mercies seal, and make my sacrifice complete. Words: Charles Wesley ( ) Music: HEREFORD, Samuel Sebastian Wesley ( ) [NEH 431] Descant: Martin How (b. 1931) CCL licence Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader. 8

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Cantor The heavens were opened and the Father s voice was heard: this is my beloved Son, hear him. eluia! GOSPEL READING LUKE 3: Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Luke. In the wilderness John proclaimed a baptism of repentance. As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, I baptise you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. But Herod the ruler, who had been rebuked by him because of Herodias, his brother s wife, and because of all the evil things that Herod had done, added to them all by shutting up John in prison. Now when all the people were baptised, and when Jesus also had been baptised and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. Deacon For the Gospel of the Lord, SERMON The Reverend Andrew Sempell Rector A time of reflection follows the sermon. 9

CREDO Please remain seated for the Credo. Celebrant Let us affirm the faith of the Church: Sung by the Choir CAVALLI MESSA CONCERTATA LATIN TEXT Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem caeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorem. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum. Et vitam venturi saeculi. Amen. PRAYER BOOK TEXT We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified: he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 10

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Deacon Let us pray for the world and for the Church. Please remain seated for the prayers. The intercessor reads the biddings followed by the litany. On this day we remember the heavens opening and the Spirit descending upon Jesus at his Baptism. In prayer, we ask that the same Spirit might descend upon us. We pray that the Church may inspire and lead all peoples to acknowledge Christ as the Son of God. Lord hear us, Lord, hear our prayer. We pray that nations may resolve their conflicts by seeking justice and peace through following the example of Christ. Lord hear us, Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for the whole Christian community; that as God s sons and daughters made one in baptism, we may always welcome the stranger, the vulnerable, the needy and poor. Lord hear us, Lord, hear our prayer. We pray that each of us may renew the commitment made at our own baptism, to renounce sin and promise to serve God faithfully in the world. Lord hear us, Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for those who are sick and suffering for any reason, that they may be given patience, trust and healing. Lord hear us, Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for those who have died; that they may share in the glory of eternal life through the power of your Spirit. Lord hear us, Lord, hear our prayer. The prayers conclude with the following: Deacon Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 11

GREETING OF PEACE Please stand. Celebrant Celebrant Christ has reconciled us to God in one body by the cross. We meet in his name and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We greet one another in the name of the Lord. HYMN Please remain standing. DURING WHICH A COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH S MINISTRY WILL BE RECEIVED Come down, O Love divine, seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turn to dust and ashes in its heat consuming; and let thy glorious light shine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity mine outward vesture be, and lowliness become mine inner clothing; true lowliness of heart, which takes the humbler part, and o er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing. And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling; for none can guess its grace, till he become the place wherein the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling. 13 Celebrant SURSUM CORDA Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts of bread and wine to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. GREAT THANKSGIVING The congregation is invited to remain standing until the Communion. Celebrant glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. You anointed him as Messiah, the light of the nations, and revealed him as the hope of all who thirst for righteousness and peace. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS Sung by the Choir LATIN TEXT Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Osanna in excelsis. CAVALLI MESSA CONCERTATA PRAYER BOOK TEXT Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Celebrant Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ s body and blood. 13

Deacon On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of neverending praise: The Church bell is rung and then silence is kept. LORD S PRAYER Celebrant As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: 14

The Celebrant breaks the Eucharistic Bread and says: As this broken bread was once many grains, which have been gathered together and made one bread: So may your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. AGNUS DEI Please be seated. The Choir sings, LATIN TEXT Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi: dona nobis pacem. CAVALLI MESSA CONCERTATA PRAYER BOOK TEXT Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace. Deacon Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Baptised Christians from other traditions are welcome to receive Communion. Others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. You are also advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security. There are two distribution points for Communion: one at the chancel steps, and one in the baptistry. Amen. Words: Psalm 112 Music: Claudio Monteverdi ( ) Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: that delighteth greatly in his commandments. His name shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed. Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever. Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth; he will guide his affairs with discretion: surely he shall not be moved for ever. The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance: he shall not be afraid of evil tidings. His heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord, his heart is established: he shall not be afraid until he see his desire upon his enemies. He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor: his righteousness endureth for ever: his horn will be exalted in glory. The wicked shall see it and be grieved, he shall gnash with his teeth and waste away: the desire of the wicked shall perish. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. At the end of the Communion a silence is kept. 16

FRANCESCO CAVALLI ( ) Francesco Cavalli was born at Crema in northern Italy on February 14, His father, Giovanni Batista Caletti, was a professional organist, and Francesco received his earliest musical training from his father. He had a particularly beautiful treble voice, and probably sang in the cathedral choir at Crema from an early age. The beauty of his voice and his other musical gifts brought him to the attention of Federico Cavalli, the Venetian governor of Crema from July 1614 to March He persuaded Francesco s father, not without some difficulty, to allow him to take the boy to Venice at the end of his governorship. Since the young Francesco thus came under Cavalli s protection, he subsequently adopted his surname, and entered the cappella, the choir of the Basilica of San Marco, on December 18, He was still a treble at this time and received an annual salary of 80 ducats. On February 18, 1617, he was formally presented to the Doge, Giovanni Bembo. His voice broke shortly after this, but he is not listed as a tenor in the choir until 1st February His salary remained stable during the following years, but was raised to 100 ducats on 1st January During Cavalli s early years at San Marco, the music was directed by the celebrated composer Claudio Monteverdi ( ) and Cavalli enjoyed a close association with him, although he may never formally have been his student. This association is shown by the likely supposition that Cavalli was the editor of some of Monteverdi s posthumously-published sacred works, in which works by Cavalli were also included. In addition, Cavalli s musical handwriting and some of his music appear in a manuscript of Monteverdi s final opera l Incoronazione de Poppea (1643), which was copied c While continuing to serve at San Marco, Cavalli was appointed organist at the Venetian church of SS Giovanni e Paolo on 18 May Although this position was less well paid the salary was only 30 ducats per annum it was regarded as more prestigious from a musical point of view. There must have been some conflicts in timetable between these two institutions, and Cavalli was without doubt obliged at times to resort to the common expedient of paying a substitute at one of them. He is also known to have supplemented his income by taking part, as both a singer and organist, at various church festivals throughout the city, for example at the famous Scuola di San Rocco in The records of his participation in such events indicate 20

that he had a very active career as a free-lance musician. Cavalli either resigned or was dismissed from SS Giovanni et Paolo on 4 November 1630, at a time when the plague was having a devastating impact on the city. Earlier that year, on 7 January, he had married, Maria Sozomeno, the niece of the Bishop of Pula. She was an affluent widow who owned a considerable amount of land and capital, and this very advantageous marriage allowed Cavalli an unprecedented degree of freedom artistically. A further gain was his winning of the competition for the post of second organist at San Marco on 23 January 1639, and as a result he was awarded a salary of 140 ducats per annum, with incremental increases up to a maximum of 200 ducats in In fact, Cavalli was paid at a higher rate than the first organist of the Basilica, Neri, and his playing was much more widely praised by both visitors and colleagues. One contemporary, though, complained that he was too rarely heard. Another, Ziotti, writing in 1655 praised all his talents in the following way: truly in Italy he has no equal as singer, organist and composer. These sentiments were echoed by other writers who knew him or of him. Cavalli remained at San Marco for the rest of his life, with the exception of an extended leave of absence between 1660 and 1662, which he spent in Paris, working for the young Louis XIV, his chief minister Cardinal Mazarin, and in co-operation with Jean-Baptiste Lully ( ), the most prominent dancer, instrumentalist and composer at the French court. After Cavalli s return to Venice he was appointed first organist at San Marco in 1665, and was made maestro di capella there in Cavalli s interest in the composition of opera began in 1639, when he was appointed second organist at San Marco, and it is his operas that have brought him the most lasting fame. He is regarded as the second most important composer of the genre in 17 th century Italy, and a worthy successor to Monteverdi, the virtual creator of this new and exciting form of dramatic art, which came into existence around Cavalli composed more than thirty operas, among the most famous being Xerse (on which Handel modelled his opera Serse in 1738), and Ercole amante, two works that he wrote for and produced in Paris. Cavalli died in Venice on 14 January In his will he left money for the twice-yearly performance of his own eight-part setting of the Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul. The major part of Cavalli s surviving church music was published in his Musiche sacre of This anthology begins with the Messa Concertata, an extended and multipartite setting scored for two choirs, eight soloists, and an instrumental ensemble consisting of strings, trombones, cornetts and organ. It was no doubt written for a festive occasion at San Marco s Basilica, though the precise occasion is unknown. Peter Holman in 1997 suggested that it was composed for the Solemn Mass that was sung in San Marco on 1st May 1644 to celebrate the reconciliation between the Vatican and the Duchy of Parma, whose relations had been far from amicable during the previous four years. In this dispute Venice had sided with Parma. It is known that a grand festive Mass by Cavalli was performed at the Arsenal in Venice a few years later, and 21

Raymond Leppard suggested in 1966 that this Mass may have been the work in question. Stylistically the Messa Concertata belongs to the decade of 1640s, and Cavalli here echoes Monteverdi s well-known technique of organizing large-scale structures by means of short, contrasted sections, with solo passages alternating with those for full choir, with antiphonal dialogue between the two choirs, and with frequent instrumental ritornelli adding variety to the colouring and texture of the score. Passages in a dance-like triple-time rhythm alternate freely with the basic duple metre of the music. There are telling dynamic contrasts between the more forthright and the more penitential and supplicatory sections of the various movements, while vocal decorations add to the virtuosity of the writing. Also, there are marked contrasts between those passages written in a concertato (concerto) style and those which are written in the style of 16 th century counterpoint the well-known contrasts between the prima e seconda prattica (first and second practice). The opening Kyrie is ternary (A B A) in form, while the multi-movement Gloria and Credo are naturally the longest movements, and those most full of dramatic contrasts. The connected Sanctus et Benedictus and the following Agnus Dei are both concise, though characterized by a memorable lyricism. Robert Forgács, 2019 CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI ( ) BEAUTUS VIR An anonymous contemporary wrote presciently of Claudio Monteverdi: Enjoy the music of the never-enough-praised Monteverdi, born to the world so as to rule over the emotions of others this truly great man known in far-flung parts and wherever music is known, will be sighed for in future ages at least as far as they can be consoled by his most noble compositions, which are set to last as long as they resist the ravages of time He was born at Cremona in northern Italy, studied with the composer Ingegneri, and in 1589 entered the service of the Gonzaga court at Mantua. He left Mantua in 1612, on his appointment as maestro di cappella at the Basilica of San Marco, Venice, where he remained until his death. Most of his sacred music was composed during his Venetian period. His most celebrated setting of Psalm 112 Beatus vir, qui timet Dominum, is scored for six voices and an instrumental ensemble; it was published in Monteverdi used his popular canzonetta (song) Chiome d oro (Hair of gold) as a model for this piece, and this accounts for the very appealing lyricism of the work. Also, he makes considerable use of rondo technique, for instance setting the phrase beatus vir as a rather jaunty oft-repeated refrain. The celebratory and optimistic character of this psalm setting reaches its climax in the final massive setting of the beatus vir refrain and the impressive Gloria. Robert Forgács,

THE ST JAMES FOUNDATION The St James Foundation Ltd. manages two charitable trusts that assist the Parish of St James with its music ministry and the maintenance and preservation of the Church building. The St James Foundation is independent of parish control. The St James Music Foundation The Music Foundation provides financial assistance to the Parish to enable production and performance of: a. Sacred and secular music with a particular focus on choral and pipe organ music, b. Sacred and secular dramatic works and artistic performances, and c. Sacred and secular performances of dance and movement, at or in association with the Parish of St James. The Music Foundation allows two kinds of donations; those toward current expenditure and those toward capital. Donations toward Current Activities Fund are intended for immediate use. This is the way that people support the Orchestral Masses and other projects. Donations to the capital are invested and the income distributed to the Parish. Donations to the Music Foundation are tax deductible. St James Church Building and Property Foundation The Building Foundation provides financial assistance to the Parish for: a. The restoration, preservation, maintenance, improvement, enhancement and upkeep of the church building, its fixtures, fittings and ornaments, and b. The preservation, protection, maintenance, improvement and enhancement of any property which the Trustee determines is or could be trust property of St James. The Building Foundation is principally a capital fund, the income of which is distributed to the Parish. Donations to the Building are not tax-deductible. Donations and Bequests These two foundations are vital for the ongoing ministry of the Parish. You are therefore encouraged to consider making either a donation or bequest to them. A brochure giving details of how to do this is available in the Baptistry or in the Parish Office. The Right Reverend Richard Hurford OAM Chairman 27
