1 Access to Diverse Talent We all need to attract and develop talented people with a wide range of social backgrounds and experiences, to help us make the best creative content and stay relevant to the increasingly diverse make-up of our audiences. Having a diverse crew, production or workplace is a major driver of creativity, ideas and output. This is a compilation of some of the existing information, activity and advice from CDN members and across the industry. WEBSITES AND PLATFORMS Scene TV Scene TV is an online platform promoting diversity and challenging perceptions, for those who are already working in TV or pursuing a career in the industry. The Talent Manager The Talent Manager is not a recruitment website, but an online software service that helps Indies and Broadcasters manage their own selected networks of people. It helps the individual people and suppliers in those networks to promote their skills and availability across the industry. TV Collective With over 40,000 members, TV Collective provides access to the latest industry news, events, development, training, networking and job opportunities aimed at improving diversity.

2 The Unit List A production jobs portal and community resource that also provides employment tools and advice, open to all TV professionals. TALENT PIPELINES AND CROSS-INDUSTRY SUPPORT Arrival Education A social enterprise providing development programmes for young people from deprived backgrounds, working with some of UK s leading independent production companies across broadcast and digital media. Catch22 Catch22 works with troubled and vulnerable young people, families and offenders, helping them to steer clear of crime or substance misuse, do the best they can in education or employment, and play a full part in their family or community. Combined Mind Combined Mind is a multi-media development and content production company that harnesses the talents and ideas of their creative network. Connecting originators of good ideas with the relevant talent and skills to create opportunity, and helping them to benefit fairly from the success of their ideas. Concrete Canvas Arts A registered charity that offers innovative and proactive learning for children and young people, using production training. Cospa Cospa delivers social action projects to inspire, mobilise and benefit communities and society at large; predominately focused in areas like education and training, social enterprise, health and sport, volunteering and community-cohesion. Creative Access Creative Access provides opportunities for paid internships in the creative industries for talented young people from under-represented black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, with a view to improving their chances of securing full-time jobs and, in the longer term, increasing diversity and addressing the current imbalance in the sector.

3 Creative Skillset Creative Skillset empowers the Creative Industries to develop skills and talent through research, funding and a variety of learning opportunities. Recent initiatives include Trainee Finder, and The Next Move. Fresh Voices Fresh Voices UK presents the work of experienced BAME writers to an invited industry audience in order to demonstrate a wider perspective. Not only of Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic stories and lives, or the black experience, but the human condition. ICUC The ICUC (I Can U Can) Back2School initiative is an organisation that provides young people with the opportunity to see, hear & meet successful, influential and famous personalities. This is achieved by public figures going Back2School to share their inspirational stories. InterMedia The LGBT network for people working in media: set up by Creative Skillset and Stonewall, the community has grown to over 600 people. Events provide networking opportunities and industry speakers. InterMedia s Fair Representation group is beginning to work with the industry to highlight the importance and the effects of how LGBT people are portrayed. Latimer Creative Media An award winning, youth-oriented, social enterprise committed to effecting social change through creative media using a unique working method; co-creation. Latimer Creative Media are a branch of Latimer Group and provide a number of opportunities to diverse talent. With access to over 4,000 young people across the UK, Latimer Creative Media have a number of campaigns that develop talent: International Work, Media Training, Youth Opportunities, Industry Networking, Educational resources and Engagement initiatives. LEAP An organisation that aims to improve the social and economic well-being of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds Leonard Cheshire Disability Helping disabled people get a career in mainstream media; to broaden the positive influence that people with a disability have in deciding how their lives and circumstances are portrayed.

4 Mama Youth Project Aims to equip disadvantaged and marginalised young people with the skills and experience that will help them to secure long-term fulfilling employment using TV Production as a tool. Media Parents An organisation which helps freelance working parents and those who want to work flexibly to balance the demands of media and other commitments, and to make it easier for employers to find this highly skilled and experienced part of the media workforce. Media Trust UK s leading communications charity, working with the media industry to empower charities and communities to have a voice and be heard. Mosaic Mosaic inspires young people from deprived communities to realise their talents and potential. We link young people with inspirational role models to boost their confidence, selfefficacy and long-term employability. Mosaic provides mentoring programmes tailored to the needs of particular groups. Runnymede Trust The UK s leading independent race equality think tank. Runnymede Trust generates intelligence for a multi-ethnic Britain through research, network building, leading debate, and policy engagement. SE1 United Providing opportunities for young people to build confidence and communication skills, increase their knowledge and understanding, find and explore their true talents through new and extraordinary experiences. Shine Media Shine Media is a Social Enterprise that works with young people from culturally diverse backgrounds who aspire to work in the journalism field. Working with two age groups: year olds and year olds, who have an interest in print, online or broadcast journalism. Studio12 Studio 12 is an audio-visual project in Leeds providing free access to production studio training, accredited qualification and an Industry Panel of creative professionals working in design, music, video and media arts. Supporting people aged years old.

5 Talent Network Forum The Talent Network Forum is made up of Talent Executives & professionals across the TV industry who come together to drive initiatives and share and discuss talent and related issues. Now with 80 members, the network is tracking, developing and sharing diverse talent throughout its member production companies. Telly Talk London Telly Talk London run a series of networking events for people who would love to work or progress in the industry. Think Bigger Think Bigger specialises in training and consultancy for the media industry. Delivering the management and training for Channel 4 s Production Training Scheme, Think Bigger trained disabled presenters and reporters for Channel 4 s award-winning 2012 coverage of the Paralympic Games and also worked with the CDN and Creative Skillset on the prestigious Northern Lights scheme. They have consulted for Skillset and others on diversity in both the film and television industries. Trainee Finder The Creative Skillset Skills Investment Fund (SIF) channels industry and government investment in training and skills development to address skills gaps and shortages in the film, animation, high-end TV, games and VFX industries. Trainee Finder: Outreach and targeting BAME recruits across UK and via diversity-focussed organisations. Women in Film & TV (WFTV) WFTV (UK) is the leading membership organisation for women working in creative media in the UK, and part of an international network of over 10,000 women worldwide. DRAMA & CREATIVE ARTS 104 Films Make British feature films for a global audience. Using the world leaders in disability and disadvantaged cinema to create a tectonic shift in the representation of disabled people both in front and behind the camera. Chickenshed An inclusive theatre company that enables everyone to flourish and create entertaining and outstanding theatre that celebrates diversity and inspires positive change. Where difference can divide, at Chickenshed the difference makes the art.

6 Identity Drama School (IDS) The drama school was formed in response to the need for an establishment that reflected and catered for actors coming from a multi-cultural society. The Identity School of Acting strives to provide drama training of the highest quality, whilst also preparing actors from all backgrounds for the reality of becoming a working actor. Talawa One of the most successful Black theatre companies in the UK, it has mounted more than forty productions many of which are award winning. Taking in everything from Shakespeare to African classics, Oscar Wilde to new Black British work and Nobel-prize winning playwrights to high-voltage musicals. INDUSTRY TRAINING PROGRAMMES AND INITIATIVES BAFTA Crew Below-the-line Practitioners from outside London, with a minimum of two credits, can apply to be part of this scheme. A BAFTA panel selects the participants who gain access to a series of live and online masterclasses. The scheme not only develops the skills of participants in key departments (Camera, Art Department, Sound, Costume, Post-production [VFX and Editing], Hair and Make-up or Production Management) it also increases their professional networks. Most crew members have experience in film and TV. BAFTA Breakthrough Brits Each year, BAFTA identifies a group of practitioners who are making a creative impact for the first time. Each Breakthrough Brit is introduced to the industry through a gala event and receives industry support and mentoring throughout the year. BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum Through an open scripts submission process, three new scripts are selected and performed by actors, live on stage. An industry chair and the audience give their notes on developing the scripts. Writers are also introduced to agents, producers and other potential collaborators. BAFTA runs two sessions in London and sessions at the New York Television Festival and the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival. BBC Academy, Broadcast and Creative Skillset Expert Women Days Increasing the media skills of subject specialist contributors for TV and Radio.

7 BBC Aim High (Northern Ireland only) A unique 18 month training scheme to find and grow the future creative talent for the local media industry and to create a Digital Talent Pool of excellent candidates for the sector. The scheme is administered by N.I. Screen, in partnership with the BBC, Skillset and Independent Production Companies. It is designed to equip trainees in multiplatform skills, camera skills, radio production, TV and radio editing and on-line production as well as editorial, research knowledge and skills and creative story-telling. Trainees will work across genres, platforms, Independent companies and Broadcasters. BBC Design Trainee Scheme This 12-month scheme helps talented Designers at the start of their careers gain an introduction to the television, film and interactive design industry. BBC Digital Media Scheme A two-year Software Developer trainee scheme, providing experience in four different areas of BBC Future Media. BBC Extend Extend is a BBC-wide placement scheme which offers appropriately experienced and/or qualified disabled people a great opportunity to gain six months paid work within the BBC. BBC General Apprentice Glasgow This is a general apprenticeship offered on an annual basis in the BBC Glasgow offices. Each apprentice will have the opportunity to contribute to the BBC s Olympic coverage output on TV, radio and online or look even further ahead by producing packages and content for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This year-long programme has been established in collaboration with the John Wheatley College, Skillset Scotland with involvement from STV and other independent production companies. BBC General Apprentice Bristol This is a general apprenticeship offered in the BBC Bristol offices on an annual basis. BBC HR Graduate Scheme The HR Graduate scheme is open to graduates from any discipline with a 2:1 degree achieved in the last 3 years. The scheme lasts 12 months and trainees will be introduced to HR in various areas of the BBC. This scheme is paid and is 22k for the duration of the 12-month fixed-term contract. BBC s Journalism Trainee Scheme A year s paid work as a trainee in one of our UK newsrooms across online, radio and TV.

8 BBC Kick Off trainee sports reporter scheme The project is aimed at giving talented people from a diverse range of backgrounds an opportunity to develop their reporting skills over an 8-week period. BBC News Trainee Operators As a Technical Operator Trainee you will based within the News Group at one of our 12 regional centres across England and will spend time working in teams within TV Operations and Production. In this critical role you ll be using and caring for the technology that keeps our broadcasts running smoothly, helping to make programmes and, most importantly, you ll be part of that all important link that ensures we reach our audiences. This opportunity is paid at 15,590 for the 12 month fixed-term period of the traineeship. BBC Production Trainee Scheme The Production Trainee Scheme is the BBC s fast track traineeship. You need to be part of their PTP (Production Talent Pool). The scheme offers a 12-month contract whereby the individual will train and develop a career in the media. BBC Production Talent Pool The Production Talent Pool is one of the main entry routes into production based roles across TV, Radio and Online at the BBC. This is a great opportunity to kick-start your media career and we re looking for talented, creative and organised people who are committed to a future in media. To apply you don t necessarily need to have worked in the media or have a degree, but you will need to be able to demonstrate your passion for TV/Radio/Online. This could be through things you ve done, either at work or personally. Strong administrative skills are also essential. As a member of the PTP you will be eligible for short term, paid entry-level work on a wide range of BBC programmes and productions such as the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, EastEnders or Strictly Come Dancing. The PTP works like a temp agency, and offers of work come up when programmes need short-term assistance. BBC Radio Journalism Apprenticeship scheme The BBC Radio Journalism Apprenticeship scheme is designed to offer a structured schedule by working towards a qualification that will give you the skills you need to be a BBC Radio Assistant Producer. BBC Scotland Apprenticeship The apprenticeship programme is a 12-month paid placement providing the skills and knowledge required to obtain a Creative & Digital Media Apprenticeship Level 3 qualification.

9 BBC Stephen Lawrence Training Scheme The scheme, which launched on 17 March 2014, aims to train up to twenty-five year olds from BAME backgrounds and to develop their skills so they can compete for paid work at entry level. The trainees will be non-graduates with no formal media work experience. However, they will demonstrate their passion and interest for television by offering evidence of creativity, for example, through blogging, YouTube, or photography. The trainee programme will culminate in a BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Creative Media Production (QCF), which will include training in Maths and English. Trainees will study for six weeks at Westminster Kingsway College (covering four modules: research, the creative media sector, communication techniques and video production). In conjunction with this they will also get six weeks work experience at the BBC - on structured placements in BBC Television and at the BBC Academy. In general, the training will follow a typical television production journey, from the initial ideas stage to research, development, making the content and pitching. BBC Take it On-Radio 1/1xtra Radio 1 & 1Xtra s Take it On internship scheme offers 8 x 8 week placements across the networks. The placements provide Radio 1 & 1Xtra with audience insight at the heart of their business whilst providing young, creative talent with hands on training and experience. BBC Technology Apprenticeship A 3-year paid apprenticeship programme, designed to provide the individual with the opportunity to gain a degree in Broadcast Engineering. BBC Work Experience The BBC offers a wide range of Work Experience opportunities, which includes international News, Production and Sport. BBC Writers Academy Shadow Scheme The Shadow Schemes are an opportunity for writers to mirror the shows writing process by producing an episode form which, the writer will be assessed for a commission. BBC UX Design Trainees As a UX Design Trainee you ll have a degree in design and an outstanding portfolio to share with us. If you re selected as our trainee you will work on a 12 month fixed term contract with our senior designers getting involved in a range of exciting projects. This traineeship is paid at 24k for the duration of the 12 month period. Creative Skillset Partnership Activities Creative Skillset run women returners and entrepreneurs workshops held in London and Salford. They also offer support for WFTV mentoring scheme.

10 C4 Apprenticeship Programme The Chanel 4 apprenticeship programme is about helping bright young people to get some experience in this industry, get some qualifications, and get paid at the same time. This Programme is designed to encourage talented people, whatever their background and qualifications. Successful individuals work in one of Channel 4 s departments for 12 months learning how everything works, what everyone does, and how it all fits into the bigger picture of Channel 4. Individuals also work towards an NVQ Level 1, 2 or 3. 4talent.channel4.com/4talent/apprenticeship-programme C4 4Crew 4Crew is a small production team, comprised of 4Talent alumni looking to gain experience in the industry. The team is comprised of a producer, director, camera-person, presenter and social media reporter, and have been commissioned, and paid, to produce content across the Channel 4 business, providing them with valuable experience and exposure. They also receive training and are matched to a Channel 4 mentor. 4talent.channel4.com/4talent C4 Graduate Programme The Channel 4 Graduate Programme is an initiative that helps build careers after university for people passionate about working in the media industry, regardless of experience or background. The placements offered fall into a variety of departments such as the following: Marketing and Communications, Sales, Audience Technology and Insight and Film4. The Graduates are paid a salary of 24,000 over the 20 month duration; participants also work towards a Creative skillset MA in Creative Media Leadership. C4 Internship Programme Channel 4 offers this 12-mont internship across a range of departments, including a competitive salary and career support. C4 Investigative Journalism Programme Journalists are given the opportunity to work within a production company for 6-12 months and develop ideas for Dispatches, Channel 4 s award-winning current affairs programme. Placements are offered in production companies based in London, Manchester and Glasgow. jobs.channel4.com C4 Production Training Scheme The Channel 4 Production Training Programme is a scheme that offers passionate individuals the opportunity to work over a 12 month period with one of Channel 4 s suppliers. The positions offered include: trainee researcher, trainee co-ordinator, and trainee junior developer. Six places are available specifically for disabled applicants. Companies offering these places are located across the country for example last year placements were offered with Raise The Roof in Glasgow and Waddell Media in Belfast. 4talent.channel4.com/4talent/production-training-programme

11 C4 Scholarship Programme In 2012 Channel 4 launched its first ever Scholarship Programme, placing two successful applicants within the Audience, Technologies and Insight department and giving them the opportunity to study towards a PhD. Participants have a five year fixed term contract with Channel 4 with a competitive salary, and attend UCL (University College London) on a part time basis working towards a PhD in Statistics. 4talent.channel4.com/4talent/scholarship-programme--2 C4 Talent Days As part of its commitment to social mobility, and recognising that the creative industries as a whole remain under-representative of some social groups, in 2012 Channel 4 set out to widen the groups of young people it was reaching through its 4Talent arm. This has involved actively seeking to attract people from all educational and employment backgrounds by venturing outside of the traditional media hubs. Over the two years 4Talent open days have visited smaller UK towns and cities that aren t seen as significant production centres, which other organisations rarely visit and many of which face issues of youth unemployment - including Derry, Barnsley, Penzance and Dundee. The 4Talent Days are a series of events designed to provide insights and knowledge of the media industry, delivered by industry professionals who reveal what skills, experience and attributes are need to get you noticed. 4talent.com/4talent/4talent-days C4 Work Experience Offering up to 60 placements a year, Work Experience at Channel 4 is for anyone over 16 who has attended a 4Talent day and is passionate about building a career in the media industry. Indie Diversity Scheme The Indie Diversity Scheme was launched by PACT in Supported by Creative Access it connected independent production companies with people from under-represented groups. Companies offer a paid six-month internship, giving the hopefuls hands-on experience in areas in a variety of production areas, including social media and second screens, artistic and literary copyright, camera operation, music copyright, storytelling and scriptwriting across platforms, and the freelancing business. All seven companies who participated in the inaugural scheme are returning this year, with new independent production companies also getting on board. ITN Work Experience ITN is committed to having a culturally and ethnically diverse workforce and offers two types of placement opportunities across news and production, which can take place in ITV News, Channel 4 News, Channel 5 News, or ITN Productions. The placements are open to anyone in the UK over the age of 18.

12 ITV Apprenticeship Programme A 12-month paid programme that supports apprenticeships in Creative & Digital Media and Business & Administration. Interns gain a nationally recognised qualified as well as getting support and guidance to take their career to the next stage. ITV Insight The Insight programme is a great way for people from all backgrounds to learn more about a career at ITV and in the industry. Membership in the ITV Insight Pool means priority access to any Insight placements that become available across ITV. Placements allow for opportunities to shadow, build up networks of contacts and experience the inner workings of the TV industry, allowing for new talent to make informed decisions about their careers. ITV News Traineeship The programme aims to nurture and develop talented entry-level journalists to a very high standard. ITV News Trainee Scheme This 12-month paid programme engages and trains fresh talent to work across news gathering and programme production at ITV News. ITV Original Voices Original Voices began in 2012 during Emmerdale s 40th Anniversary celebrations as a pioneering creative initiative for writers from a Black, Asian or other Minority Ethnic background, who were living in Yorkshire and the North East. The aim was to find interesting writers who were most likely to be outside the current network of agents and producers. Rather than creating a scheme that offered some training and workshops, but didn t lead to employment, we wanted to create tangible access for great talent. We provided a training route in-house on Emmerdale, along with our own team of storyliners who plot the show, and a chance to progress to the writers team. With a successful launch, plans are underway to rerun the initiative on other programmes. ITV Work Inspiration Work Inspiration is part of a national initiative which offers young people, aged from a diverse range of backgrounds, the opportunity to gain real experience of the world of work as well as the opportunity to experience behind the scenes of some of the top UK programmes.

13 Shine Group The Hatch The Hatch is Shine s social enterprise production company established to find young creative production talent who might otherwise struggle to break into the industry, because of their backgrounds or circumstances. Recruits were trained to become a professional production unit, underpinned by Skillset s Creative and Digital Media apprenticeships, alongside a structured mentoring programme involving staff from across the Shine Group companies. Shine is recruiting for the next intake of The Hatch, open to young people (18-25 year olds) with raw, undiscovered talent who face barriers to entering the media industry. There are 5 paid six-month job opportunities available. Sky Apprenticeship Programme The apprenticeship programme offers a nationally recognised qualification and a permanent position while you re learning. Aimed at inspiring young people, supports emerging talent and helping to build skills and self-belief for future generations. jobs.sky.com/starting-out/apprenticeship-opportunities Sky Academy Skills Studios An interactive learning experience that takes schools behind the scenes at Sky. Students build life skills by using our state-of-the-art technology to make a TV news report on subjects they re studying through the curriculum, aimed at young people aged 8-18 years old. Sky Scholarships Sky offer a series of scholarship programmes across Sports, Art and TV. Sky Sports Living for Sport A schools initiative programme which uses sports stars and sports skills to help build young people s confidence and life skills. Sky Work Experience Providing a range of short-term Work Experience opportunities across a number of different departments.
