1 Master of Public Health at Hofstra University A partnership of Hofstra University s School of Health Sciences and Human Services and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine
2 About the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program Hofstra s Master of Public Health (MPH) program offers an innovative curriculum and advanced training for the next generation of public health professionals, preparing them to analyze and adapt to an increasingly complex and changing health care system. The program combines the expertise and resources of Hofstra University s School of Health Sciences and Human Services, Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and North Shore-LIJ Health System. The program s interdisciplinary approach recognizes the contributions of other disciplines, including business, economics, education, law, political science, psychology, public administration and sociology. MPH program faculty guide students in applying newly honed skills through service-learning initiatives, course assignments, multiple levels of structured fieldwork, and participation in research and community-based projects. Students learn to effectively communicate and disseminate public health research to change behavior and shape health policy. The MPH program at Hofstra University recognizes its important role in the local community, and in a broader national and international dialogue related to public health issues and problems. The 42-semester hour program emphasizes critical understanding of the determinants of disease and health in populations; research skills; and the theoretical and practical bases for interventions aimed at improving the health of populations. MPH program faculty develop and strengthen students analytical, critical thinking and oral and written communication skills; promote cross-cultural competencies; and provide information literacy and technological skills that prepare students to become successful public health researchers, practitioners and policymakers, among other related professions. About Hofstra University Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution of higher education where students choose from undergraduate and graduate offerings in liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, teacher education, engineering and applied science, health sciences and human services, honors studies, law and medicine. With a small average class size and low student-teacher ratio, the University features excellent facilities with state-of-the-art technology, extensive library resources, and valuable internship programs that match students interests and abilities with appropriate companies and organizations. The Hofstra community is driven, dynamic and energetic, helping students find and focus their strengths to prepare them for successful futures. Located on 240 acres in Nassau County, New York, the University is less than an hour from midtown Manhattan. 2
3 About the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University The Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University, which welcomed its inaugural class in July 2011, represents a unique partnership between outstanding institutions. This union enables the School of Medicine to provide unparalleled clinical training, research opportunities and academic infrastructure for students. The integrated curriculum blends humanistic medicine with sophisticated science and molds students into caring, patient-centered physicians. Learning takes place both on Hofstra s campus in Hempstead, New York, and throughout North Shore-LIJ s vast health system. The medical school, located in newly renovated facilities on Hofstra s campus, features a 108-seat capacity Medical Education Theater; dozens of small group meeting areas; a state-of-the-art Structure Lab; Health Sciences Library; and full-service cafe. Additional learning sites include the world-renowned Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and North Shore-LIJ Health System s Center for Learning and Innovation, Patient Safety Institute, and Bioskills Education Center. About the School of Health Sciences and Human Services The mission of the Hofstra University School of Health Sciences and Human Services is to educate students in the theory and practices of their specialized area of study, with a strong foundation in the natural, social and behavioral sciences. Using an interdisciplinary approach, partnered with arts and sciences, medicine, education, business, communication and law, the School of Health Sciences and Human Services offers programs that are responsive to the dynamic relationship among scientific research, policy and therapeutic practice in health care, community and educational settings. Through competency-based instruction, field experience and research training, students are educated to become effective and compassionate clinicians, evidence-based practitioners, policy makers, managers and advocates who promote health equity. Graduates are able to adapt to changing health care, community, and educational environments, and are dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of populations, locally, nationally and globally. 3
