3 Medication Aide A Higher Degree of Skill Development Medication Aides can provide medications in long term care facilities (Nursing Homes), assisted living centers; intermediate care facilities for the mentally handicapped, child care settings, schools, or patient homes. A Medication Aide is trained to work under the direct supervision of a caretaker or licensed health care professional. Medication Aides provide routine medication by oral, inhalation, topical and instillation routes when appropriate direction and monitoring are provided. This program is approved by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. College credit is not offered. Course Information and Prerequisites 1. It is highly recommended, not mandatory that students have completed a Nurse Aide course or minimally six months of prior work experience as a Nurse Aide before attempting to complete the Medication Aide Course. 2. The Medication Aide Class course provides 40 hours of classroom instruction related to the competencies required for medication administration. 3. Students successfully completing the course receive a Certification of completion from the Medication Aide Class and qualify to take the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Medication Aide written Examination. Note: The State Medication Aide examination is administered monthly outside the scope of this course at various locations. Design by sll 05/10-3 -

4 4. The State of Nebraska requires that a student must be 18-years-old and be able to speak and understand the English language. 5. Applicants need to be aware of the eligibility requirements for taking the State certification testing and employment. Persons with a criminal record, substance abuse problems or health problems that would interfere with safe practices may be ineligible for state testing and/or employment. Many employers may require an individual to be a Certified Nursing Assistant before allowing them to function as a Medication Aide 6. Attendance at all classroom sessions is required for completion. 5 Course Schedule: The Medication Aide Classes are held monthly. Twice a week for 4 weeks. The Additional 20 Hour Course is held monthly. Twice a week for 2 weeks. The class sessions are held 5PM-10PM. No classes held in December. Competency Assessments are held separate from class and are by appointment only. 6 Payment Information A fee of $ includes textbook. Payment plans are available and vouchers are accepted. Refund Policy All monies paid by the student applicant will be refunded if requested in writing within three (3) days after signing an Enrollment Agreement. A full refund will also be given if the applicant is not accepted by the school. Students who have not visited the campus prior to enrollment will have the opportunity to withdraw without penalty within three days following attendance at a regularly scheduled orientation or following a tour of the school facilities and inspection of equipment. If applicant cancels after three days after signing an Enrollment Agreement but before classes begin or home study materials are delivered, a full refund less $50 will be given. If the applicant cancels or withdraws after classes begin, the school shall adhere to the refund policy published in the school's catalog or in the enrollment agreement. Once books and supplies have been issued, they become the property of students and any refunds on them shall be at the discretion of the school. Course Location All class sessions are held at: Methodist Hospital 8303 West Dodge Rd., Omaha, Nebraska In a conference room on the second floor (Please see map) School Facilities The cafeteria is located on the 2 nd floor across from the conference rooms. 8 Equipment for Training Students will demonstrate a competency in passing Medications, documentation of medication pass in The administration of oral, rectal, topical and sublingual Medications. This is part of the class room experience. The student will have class labs for blood pressure, temperatures, Pulses, etc. (blood pressure cuffs and electronic wrist, electronic and tympanic temperature, stethoscopes. Nose manikin for nose sprays and drops.) Bubble packs and cassettes for medication administration. Nebulizer film-demonstration. Medication administration films. Medication-Liquid medication cup and oral syringe. Shadowing for students at approved facilities. Grading System The class consists of 3 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final and the Competency Assessment. An average of 80% is needed to pass the course. 9 Dismissals Students may be dismissed due to such reasons as no-shows or attendance problems. Readmission will be allowed for the next month. No credit granted for previous education, training or experience. Approved by Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. College credit is not offered. 10 The competencies include recognition of: 1. Maintaining Confidentiality 2. Complying with a resident s right to refuse to take medication 3. Maintaining hygiene and current accepted standards for infection control 4. Documenting accurately and completely 5. Providing medications according to the five rights 6. Having the ability to understand and follow instructions 7. Practicing safety in application of medication procedures 8. Complying with limitations and conditions under which a medication aide or medication staff may provide medications 9. Having an awareness of abuse and neglect reporting requirements 10. Complying with every resident s right to be free from physical and verbal abuse The administration of medication is a regulated activity. Medication Aides may only provide medications under circumstances when a competent individual, a caretaker, or licensed health care professional provides direction and monitoring. The Medication Aide is responsible to get the Right drug to the right recipient in the right dosage by the right route at the right time (five rights). The individual providing direction and monitoring is responsible to observe and take appropriate action regarding any desired effects, side effects, interactions, and contraindications associated with the medication.
