2 opinions of the National Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit or Operation UNITE. 1. Drug overdose deaths reach all- time high Nadia Kounang, CNN Despite efforts to fight the opioid epidemic, deaths from drug overdoses reached an all- time high in 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Deaths from overdoses of prescription drugs and heroin continue to be the leading cause of unintentional death for Americans, rising 14% from 2013 to conjunction with the National Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit. On the Website Become a Sponsor Become an Exhibitor Event Registration Hotel Reservations 2015 Rx Summit Contact Us Last year, 47,055 people died from drug overdoses times greater than the number killed in car crashes. Opioids are involved in 61% of all drug overdose deaths. The latest CDC data finds that deaths from natural opiates such as morphine, codeine and semisynthetic prescription pain killers like oxycodone and hydrocodone jumped 10% from 2013 to Deaths from heroin overdoses rose 26%. Stay Connected The biggest increase in deaths was from synthetic opioids, which went up 80%. According to the CDC, the increase in synthetic opioid deaths coincided with increased reports by law enforcement of illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Download CDC Report, click here. 2. CDC releases draft opioid guidelines for doctors, comment period open Lenny Bernstein, The Washington Post The government on Monday, December 14, urged primary- care physicians who prescribe opioids for pain relief to rein in their use of the drugs, proposing new guidelines 2 of 6 12/22/15 10:49 AM

3 that call for a more conservative approach than the one that has led to a crippling epidemic of addiction to the powerful narcotics. Just a few days after a new report showed a surge of drug- related overdoses in 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggested in draft recommendations that physicians tackle chronic pain with other methods, such as physical therapy and non- opioid analgesics, before turning to the powerful medications. If opioids, such as OxyContin and Percocet, are necessary, the agency recommended short- acting versions over extended release formulations, the lowest possible dose and short- term prescriptions. It also suggested that doctors ask patients to take urine tests before prescribing opioids and additional urine tests at least once a year if they continue on the drugs, to ensure that they aren't secretly taking other opioids or illegal drugs. Public comment period open until January 13, 2016 CDC's draft Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, 2016 is now available at for review and comment until January 13, Please submit all comments and feedback at Enter the docket number (CDC ). 3. New study shows as many as 80% of employers face Rx drug abuse by workers Dina Gustovsky, CNBC News The director of the Centers for Disease Control and 3 of 6 12/22/15 10:49 AM

4 Prevention, Dr. Tom Frieden, recently referred to opioid abuse - including prescription painkillers - as "a growing epidemic that is gripping our country." And increasingly, that grip includes the American workplace. A new survey, the first of its kind, conducted by the National Safety Council (NSC), along with Indiana's attorney general, concluded that 80 percent of Indiana employers have been impacted by prescription drug misuse and abuse by employees. Deborah Hersman, president and CEO of the NSC, told CNBC that these issues are not just limited to Indiana. 4. ONDCP Director wants to refocus drug policy Scott Pelley, CBS News 60 Minutes After 40 years and $1 trillion, the nation has little to show for its war on drugs. Prisons are beyond crowded and there's a new outbreak in the heroin epidemic. If it's time for a change, it would be hard to find a leader more different than Michael Botticelli. The president's new Director of National Drug Control Policy isn't a cop. He's lucky he didn't go to jail himself. And we knew that things had changed the first time we used the nickname that comes with his job, the "drug czar." Botticelli, during an interview aired December 13, said the old war on drugs is all wrong, and wants to refocus the country's drug policy. 4 of 6 12/22/15 10:49 AM
