1 2015 SUMMER READING LIST

2 Academic Excellence Grounded in a Biblical Worldview Dear KDS Parents, Summer is a great time for reading, whether it s an early quiet morning on the porch, a long lazy afternoon by the pool, or a cool firefly-filled evening in the backyard. Our kids need some down time among all the activities of summer. Reading is a great way to just relax and let one s mind escape into the pages of a book. We have provided a list of recommended titles, divided by grade, to give you and your child a place to start. If your child finds an author he or she particularly likes, look for more books by that person. It is important to establish the habit of reading for your family, and here are some ideas to help you achieve this: 1. Read to your child frequently and consistently, even to those who can already read by themselves. Research shows that children who read become better readers and develop better vocabularies. 2. Let your child see you read, whether it is the newspaper, a magazine or novel. Your own example is most valuable. 3. Encourage your children to read to each other. It is particularly helpful when a younger child or a child with difficulties reads to others. 4. Take your child to the public library to obtain his or her own library card! Use that card often and participate in their summer reading program. 5. Frequent the many wonderful bookstores around St. Louis. 6. Encourage more reading and less TV, Xbox or computer time. Please feel free to or call me at school over the summer with any questions you might have. Happy Reading! Jennifer Rush Jennifer Rush KDS Librarian jrush@kirkdayschool.org Ladue Road - St. Louis, Missouri
