1 The Looking at the following diagrams, which one shows a casualty in the correct recovery position? A B C D E F In which order would you complete the following statements to place a casualty in the recovery Position? Write the number in the box next to the statement. Tilt the casualty s head back to ensure the airway remains open adjusting their hand under their cheek if necessary. Place the nearest arm at right angles to their body (making the stop sign). Bend the leg furthest away at the knee keeping the foot flat on the floor. By carrying out DRAB you have identified that the casualty is breathing and unconscious. Keep their hand pressed against their cheek and pull on the far leg to roll casualty onto their side. Kneel beside casualty removing their glasses and any objects from their pockets. Straighten the casulaty s legs. Keep the casualty warm by placing blankets or coats under and over the person if possible. Bring the far arm across their chest and place the back of their hand against the cheek nearest you. Adjust their upper leg so that their hip and knee are bent at right angles.
2 R e c o v e r y P o s i t i o n L i n e - u p? 1. Kneel beside the casualty removing their glasses and any objects in their pockets Straighten their legs and place their arm nearest to you out at right angles to their body with their elbow bent and arm facing. upwards Bring the far arm across their chest placing the back of their hand against the cheek nearest you and hold their hand in this position. 4. With your other hand, grasp the far leg above the knee and pull it up, keeping the foot flat on the floor. 5. Keeping their hand pressed against their cheek, pull on the far leg to roll the casualty towards you onto their side. 6. Tilt their head back to ensure the airway remains open adjusting their hand under their cheek if necessary. 7. Adjust their upper leg so that their hip and knee are bent at right angles.
3 Recovery Reminder If a casualty is unconscious and breathing normally, they should be placed in the recovery position. Knowing the correct way to place someone in the recovery position is extremely important for both your own safety and the casualties. Remembering what you have learnt during this session design a poster, leaflet or a wallet card that would help remind someone about the correct way of placing a casualty in the recovery position.
