Opening Comments and Introduction of Guests (Dr. Ken Allen) Ken called the meeting to order 12:10 p.m. 2. Approval of Minutes of April 9, 2014 Meeting (Ken Allen for Rob Aguis) Ken noted that Rob has served as Secretary of this group but has not attended a meeting in quite some time, so we may want to consider appointing a replacement. Bob Clark noted that Rob is now actually a Principal in Pasco so he may have more time availability. Ken reviewed the minutes from the April 9, 2014, meeting. By acclimation, the minutes were approved as presented. 3. Approval of Financial Report (Ken Allen Marjorie Ebersbach) Ken reported that our beginning balance is $ , and with expenses, we are now at $1595. It is now time for dues for the coming year; Ken will send out invoices very shortly to the persons on record. He is hopeful to receive dues by October. The check should be made payable to TBAC/FASA Central Florida Regional Coalition. Ken reported that Marjorie has retired and her replacement is Gary Schiffrin. Ken will contact Gary and ask if he would like to also replace Marjorie as Treasurer. 4. FASA Update/Summer Conference The FASA Summer conference was held in Tampa and was excellently organized and provided members with lots of good information. Wendy added that she was very impressed with the panelists and got really good feedback from principals on quality and presentation. Next year, our goal is to work harder on PAC fundraising. Ken noted this was the largest conference held in many years. Polk County joined Hillsborough for our regional teams meeting. With regard to the regional team in which Central Florida is represented by our group, at our meeting we had to come up with some

2 Page 2 concrete objectives to work toward: increase communication from and within the Central Florida team by working on concrete methods, i.e., social meeting; work diligently with legislators to return funding to our 2007 level; make an effort to meet, greet, and communicate with local delegations. Trish Arnold is striving hard to get this moving. Our goal is now to focus as a central team to bring to a reality what we all want and that is 14,000 administrators as a total team for education in the state of Florida. 5. Central Florida Coalition Position Statement at Conference Ken was instructed to present a position statement regarding the Coalition s input into things we have discussed. He spoke with Juhan Mixon and Bob Jones and they were very supportive of the intent of the Coalition to recognize establishing representation. It is apparent that the lines of communication between our Coalition and FASA have opened considerably and our input is being sought. He suggests that we continue our relationship with FASA and when appropriate let our concerns be known. He is not recommending any action be taken Legislative Platform Input Marty expressed his concerns with the core curriculum being implemented. Concerns with evaluation process; law may be repealed for new area of growth and if it will allow funding for classrooms. The requirements are not consistent with public schools and private schools when it concerns virtual school. At our October meeting Ken would like to focus on our legislative platform which we will then share with FASA as our input to them. Ken noted that we hope to finalize our legislative platform at the October meeting. Simple message that we are requesting millage be restored to 2 mills. 7. Coalition Initiatives for 2015 Bob received a call from Bob Crawford in Broward County re., technical education bill. Some superintendents are reluctant to change the name of technical schools until information is actually received from Tallahassee. Bill Orr noted that one of the biggest advantages of changing name is benefits of technical schools vs propriety schools and the costs involved. Wendy, Connie and Darvin will provide us with updates. Peggy voiced her concerns with students being able to meet PE requirements by using a computer program. Platform statement: computer program substitution courses be courses that can logistically be completed and not courses such as PE requirement. Wendy feels that capital outlay is universal for all districts and we should request 2007 funding; also request half mill back. Juhan stated the mindset from legislators is they don t want districts to build new schools but maintain existing schools, use virtual schools more to get students out of school.

3 Page 3 8. Political Action Update Michele summarized the conference call that was held last week which is a summary of FASA s objective with supporting various candidates, including contributions. Michele cited an regarding vacancies on the FASA Board. It is a good opportunity that would fit and for us to have more input. Michele noted that we have an opening for a secondary principal for central region. Bylaws states that vacancies be nominated and receive board approval. Currently we have one AP and one principal vacancy. Board will request resumes from nominees. Nominations are due by February. Membership of that department would vote; person elected would take office July 1; goal is to have rotating positions with goal of 5 positions available each year. Bob asked how they will ensure that positions are filled throughout each region and not all from one district. Michele noted it is up to the regions. 9. Round Table and New Business Juhan noted that in dealing with other organizations in Tallahassee, it is all about power and being recognized by the numbers you have. FASA is considered one of the weakest. When we talk with Superintendents and School Board members, we tell them FASA does not want to be in charge of school districts but Superintendents and School Board members need us, so we need numbers in FASA. Three years ago we went to select superintendents and asked if the district would pay for individual members with one district agreeing. The second year, professional development day was given at no cost to the district with 12 districts agreeing to this. We have a lot of improvement to make. He has approached Seminole, and has meetings scheduled with Orange, Polk, Collier, Charlotte, Marion. Nassau, Hernando, and Flagler approached him to get these professional development days. Should Orange, Polk and Seminole join them, we will be representing more than half of administrators in the state of Florida. Getting the right board members is pivotal in getting the representation. Juhan will be meeting with MaryEllen Elia, noting that Hillsborough has been most supportive in everything we have been trying to do in the last four years. St. Johns, Alachua, Lee, Santa Rosa, Leon, Walton; those coming in Seminole, Collier, Polk. Once we get 50% that is reason to celebrate. Got a grant from Helios Foundation. If we want to be successful in public education, then we have to be together on this. We stand a very good chance of winning law suit on vouchers lawsuit to be filed on August 28. In the 100/100 campaign we are at $5000; we have 65 board members and have asked them to make a personal commitment. Michele sent out an yesterday on upcoming webinars on various subjects. Any help to advertise with administrators is appreciated. Registration is opening up soon for legislative days; registration for summer conference will be open before the holidays. Juhan noted that we have strengthened our ties with NASSP. We will be asking for representation from various groups to represent us. We are also trying to strengthen

4 Page 4 visibility in PAC with secondary principals and student councils. Local districts can negotiate and meet regularly with superintendents and that is something we cannot do. Peggy noted that the Superintendent seems to be a good fit for Pinellas and is hopeful he stays around for a long time. Bill Orr noted HASA reached out to CTA and HSEF for PAC got a lot of lip service but no money. Ken congratulated Bill on taking on the personal initiative to contact retirees to encourage them to vote. Connie noted that people ask about candidates and who they should vote for. Social media, personal phone calls, etc. are making a difference in getting people out to vote. HASA now has a Twitter account and has now become involved in the future leaders academy and once an individual is appointed, we approach them for their membership. Ernie noted that he has made phone calls to retirees and has gotten very good feedback. Jean was pleased to talk with retirees regarding voting issues; retirees were very happy to hear from her and those she left messages for called her back. Marty noted they have a board member up for re-election and talking about too much testing being done teachers also concerned. It will be interesting to see what is going to happen. Bill noted they have been interested in getting FASA membership. He would rather see $79 taken from pay raise; feels it would be more beneficial. Darvin reported that the national championship game is on January 12, at the same time as the legislative days. Seminole association is off to a good start; picked up 39 new members; the superintendent invites us to recruit members; we are very satisfied with the move we are making. We don t have Twitter but we do have a Facebook page. We will try hard to get more district participation. Bob still tries to garner more interest in our local organization. This is a big year for us on election as we are renewing our ½ cent sales tax. Orange County is blessed with great facilities. We don t go in to see the Superintendent with an agenda that this is what we want for administrators but let her know we represent more than 50% of administrators and we ask what we can do for her. She uses our board as a confidential group to meet with. As a result she gets solid feedback from our association. Wendy reported that on behalf of PAC and PASA, as soon as primaries are over please let her know if there are any local candidates you are backing. The most important race coming up is the general election with the governor s race. She encouraged everyone to think of creative ways for incentives with the most I Voted stickers; taking people to polls, etc.
