You can put aside money each month into a savings account that pays interest - when you have saved up 800 you can buy the TV If you saved 30 per month it would take 27 months to save up 800 If you saved 50 per month it would take 16 months to save up 800 If you saved 80 a month it would take you 10 months to save up 800 It won t cost you anything in interest payments You will gain interest while you save You can t have the TV now - you will need to wait until you have saved up enough money It may take you longer than you expected to save the money if, for instance, you end up spending the saved money on an unforeseen circumstance
You have seen an offer on the internet for personal loans Interest rate = 8% APR 24 monthly payments of Total amount repayable = Total interest payable = You can pay off the outstanding amount of the loan at any time but you will be charged an administration fee of 10 This is a structured loan agreement and your monthly payments are fixed The cost is spread over 2 years so the monthly payment is quite low If you save the money you can pay off the outstanding amount of the loan early and pay less interest There is no flexibility on the amount you pay monthly If you miss payments it will show up on your credit file and will affect your ability to borrow money in the future
The shop that is selling the TV can offer you a Buy Now - Pay Later deal You can take the TV away with you today and defer payment for up to 12 months If you back pay the 800 in full on or before the agreed date you will not be charged interest If you do not settle the payment within the 12 month period the remaining balance automatically transfers to a fixed payment loan: o Interest rate = 29% APR o 24 monthly payments of o Total amount repayable = 1, o Total interest charged = You don t have to part with the money for up to 12 months It is an alternative to saving the money If you pay it off in full before 12 months it won t cost you anything in interest You could earn interest on your money in a savings account in that time It is your responsibility to save the money no-one will remind you If you don t pay the 800 within 12 months it will end up costing you
You have received a letter inviting you to apply for a credit card Credit card spending limit = 1,000 Interest rate = 20% APR You pay interest on the outstanding amount each month The minimum payment you have to make each month is 3% of the outstanding balance Pay off 30 per month 30 months to pay off interest charged = 103 Pay off 50 per month 17 months to pay off interest charged = 59 Pay off 80 per month 10 months to pay off interest charged = 36 You can choose how much you pay off each month You can pay the outstanding balance off at any time without a penalty If you only pay off the minimum 3 % payment each month on the 800 it will end up costing you 250 in interest You may be tempted to keep on using the credit card for other purchases and end up with a never-ending debt
Your bank can offer you an overdraft facility on your current account You have an authorised overdraft up to 1,000 You will be charged 5 each month your account is overdrawn within your agreed overdraft limit If your account goes over the 1,000 authorised overdraft limit you will be charged 50 per month Pay off 30 per month 27 months to pay off interest charged = 133 Pay off 50 per month 16 months to pay off interest charged = 80 Pay off 80 per month 9 months to pay off interest charged = 40 You can choose how much money you set aside each month to pay off your overdraft If you can pay off your overdraft quickly the charges will be quite low An overdraft is unstructured there are no set repayments and it is your responsibility to pay the money back If you delay paying off the overdraft it could end up costing you a lot in charges If you are tempted to keep using it the overdraft could become a neverending debt
