2 CRCA 2012 TRADE SHOW & SEMINARS SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES - LISTED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER Gary Auman, Director, Dunlevey, Mahan & Furry 110 N. Main St., Suite 1000, Dayton, OH ~ [email protected] Gary concentrates his practice on occupational safety and health law, workers compensation defense. With over 35 years of experience, Gary is a noted authority and staunch management advocate in workers compensation and occupational safety and health law. He regularly writes on occupational safety and health law for a number of trade publications. In addition, he is a frequent speaker on occupational safety and health topics at seminars and conferences throughout the United States. Gary represents both small and large companies and is general counsel to several national and regional trade associations. Gary is a member of the American, Ohio State, and Dayton Bar Associations as well as the Board of Directors of the Dayton/Miami Valley Safety Council, and the Dayton chapter of A Special Wish Foundation, the United Way of Dayton. He is past chair of the Workers Compensation Committee of the Dayton Bar Association and past chair of the Board of Trustees of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Dayton/Miami Valley Safety Council. Gary serves on the Workers Compensation Committee of the Defense Research Institute. Gary volunteers his time with the National Safety Council. Gary serves as a Board member of A Special Wish Foundation. He chaired the 2005 fundraising campaign for the United Way of Greater Dayton area and is currently immediate past-chair of the United Way Board. Gary is a past recipient of the Robert M. Hisnay Memorial Award from the Ohio Self-Insurers Association for volunteering his time to the association and its members. He has also been recognized by a number of associations, including the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, for volunteering his time and chairing several committees and the Board. He was volunteer of the year in In 2002, Gary was honored by the National Safety Council when he received its Distinguished Service to Safety Award. This is the highest individual honor that can be bestowed by the National Safety Council. Gary received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Louisville. He received his law degree, graduating summa cum laude, from The Ohio State University College of Law. Gary served in the United States Air Force from Andre Desjarlais, Building Envelopes Group Leader, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), P.O. Box, 2008, MS-6070, Oak Ridge, TN ~ [email protected] Andre is the Program Manager, Building Envelopes Program (BEP) at ORNL. Prior to joining the Buildings Technology Center in 1991, he was the manager of the Thermophysics Laboratory at Holometrix, Inc., where he conducted research on the thermophysical properties of materials and systems with an emphasis on reflective insulation systems and fenestration products. Andre s areas of research include in-situ testing protocols, the development of standardized means of determining the long-term thermal performance of closed cell plastic foams, and the impacts of moisture in low-slope roof systems. Christiansen Roofing Co., Inc. in Milwaukee in 1984 as an estimator and project manager. In 1986, he joined Wiss, Janney & Elstner Associates, Inc., Northbrook, IL, as a project engineer specializing in the investigation, design and repair of roofing and waterproofing systems. Mark joined NRCA in 1993 and is responsible for the association s Technical Services section. His responsibilities include response to inquiries for technical information and assistance, serving as NRCA s technical liaison with outside organizations, and developing and maintaining the association s documents, including The NRCA Roofing Manual. He is the staff liaison to NRCA s Technical Operations Committee and Manual Update Committee. He is also a contributing editor for Professional Roofing magazine. Mark is a member of ASTM and is active in the following ASTM committees: D-8 Roofing and Waterproofing, C-16 Thermal Insulation, E-5 Fire Standards and E-6 Performance of Buildings. He is also a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE), the International Code Council (ICC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA.) Mark and his wife have two children and reside in Naperville, IL.
3 Rodney Petrick, President, Ridgeworth Roofing Co., Inc., 9720 S. Industrial Dr., Bridgeview, IL ~ [email protected] Rod served as 2007 and 2008 Chicago Roofing Contractors Association President. He has been involved with the CRCA as Chairman of the Industry Affairs and Technical Operations Committee as well as Chairman of the Trade Show Committee. He has also worked closely with the Roofing Industry Alliance to negotiate with the City of Chicago to amend the Roofing Reflectivity ordinance required in the new building code. He was awarded the Clyde Scott Award at the 2011 CRCA Annual Awards Dinner in December. Outside of CRCA, Rod is also past president of the Midwest Roofing Contractor Association. He also was a MRCA Director from 1998 to 2000, a Technical and Research Committee Member since 2001 as well as other various committees. He was appointed to the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation Roofing Industry Advisory Board in Stephen Phillips, Senior Partner, Hendrick, Salzman & Flatt, 230 Peachtree St. NW, Ste 2500, Atlanta, GA ~ [email protected] Mr. Phillips s practice focuses upon legal issues pertaining to the construction industry and particularly the commercial roofing industry. He has gained national recognition concerning legal issues affecting the roofing industry. For over 30 years, he has been representing parties in commercial roofing matters. For the past 25 years, he has served as general counsel to the National Roofing Contractors Association and was one of the founders and also serves as counsel to the National Roofing Legal Resource Center, based in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Phillips has written and spoken extensively regarding construction law topics and construction litigation, particularly regarding the commercial roofing industry. He is the principal author of the warranty section of the Commercial Low-Slope Roofing Materials Guide and the Residential Steep-Slope Roofing Materials Guide, published by the National Roofing Contractors Association and the OSHA Citation Defense Manual published by the National Roofing Legal Resource Center. He is the author of "Liabilities of Parties Engaged in Re-roofing Construction Projects, published as part of the Proceedings of the Low-Slope Re-roofing Workshop, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the co-author of "Roofing Systems," published by the American Bar Association, Forum Committee on the Construction Industry, for a program on Construction Technology for Lawyers. He has published articles on numerous construction topics such as insurance coverage applicable to construction disputes, measuring damages when there is defective construction, construction contracts, liquidated damages, mold claims, proprietary specifications, bid mistakes, anti-indemnity statutes, building code violations, bidder responsibility and bid responsiveness and the Spearin doctrine. Mr. Phillips has presented papers and lectured on construction topics to a wide range of groups, including symposium sponsored by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Georgia Tech Research Institute, the Clemson University Continuing Engineering Education Program, the University of Illinois' Office of Extension Conferences, the American Institute of Architects, the American Bar Association's Forum on the Construction Industry and numerous construction contractor groups. He has served as chairman and member of the Board of Regents and faculty of The Roofing Industry Educational Institute (RIEI), a non-profit educational organization. He has served as a lecturer for the Georgia Tech Research Institute's asbestos courses covering legal requirements and liabilities associated with asbestos-related construction work and the RIEI course on Roofing and Asbestos. Mr. Phillips is a member of the American Arbitration Association's Commercial Panel to hear construction disputes under the Construction Industry Arbitration Rules and has served as a construction arbitrator. In 1995, Mr. Phillips was elected by his peers as a fellow in the American College of Construction Lawyers. He has been designated as a Georgia Super Lawyer in the field of construction law and construction litigation each year since 2004 and has been recognized and listed in such publications as Best Lawyers in America, The International Who s Who of Construction Lawyers, and Chambers USA America s Leading Lawyers for Business. In 2003, Mr. Phillips was awarded the J. A. Piper Award by the National Roofing Contractors Association in recognition of devoted and constant outstanding service to the roofing industry. He also received the Boone Noblitt Award from the Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Georgia for outstanding service. Prior to entering private law practice, Mr. Phillips worked as a Congressional staff member in Washington, D.C. and was the author of several Congressional studies dealing with environmental issues as an analyst in environmental policy for the Congressional Research Service. He has an undergraduate degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. where he was the editor-in-chief of the University newspaper. He earned a law degree in 1976 from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where he served on the Law Review. He is a member of the Forum Committee on the Construction Industry and the
4 Section on Litigation of the American Bar Association. He has served on the Board of the Georgia Legal Services Program and is admitted to the State Bar of Georgia, the District of Columbia Bar, the United States Court of Federal Claims and the Atlanta Bar Association. Steven R. Thorsell, AIA, CSI, ICC Evaluation Service, LLC 4051 W. Flossmoor Rd., Country Club Hills, IL ~ [email protected] Steven is currently the Program Coordinator of ICC-ES Environmental Programs for ICC Evaluation Service, Inc., a subsidiary corporation of the International Code Council (ICC). Over the past 19 years at ICC, Thorsell has been involved with research and evaluation of alternative and innovative construction materials and methods for their compliance with code requirements. In his current position he is involved in the evaluation of environmental attributes of construction products and materials. Thorsell is a graduate of Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago where he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree and is a State of Illinois Licensed Architect. Prior to his current position he was as a practicing architect, specification writer and code enforcement official. Professional memberships include the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), ASTM International, and the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC), where he has served on the NIBS BETEC Board of Direction since He was a member of the Cool Roof Rating Council and the Green Building Initiative s Green Globes ANSI standard development committees and is a past-president of the Northern Illinois Chapter of CSI. Adler, Vice President, Adler Roofing and Sheet Metal, Inc. 779 Joyce Rd., Joliet, IL 60436, ~ [email protected] Mike is a third generation roofing contractor and serves as his firm s Safety Director. He has been involved with CRCA s Health and Safety Committee for at least 10 years and serves as Chairman. He graduated from Northern Illinois University, with a degree in Business Management. Frank J. Marino, Vice President of Safety Check, Inc McKanna Rd., Minooka, IL ~ [email protected] Frank is Vice President and co-owner of Safety Check, Inc. He received his BS from Illinois State University where he majored in Occupational Safety. He received his MBA from the University of Phoenix Chicago. He is an authorized OSHA 10 and 30 Hour Instructor and an authorized Industrial Powered Truck Instructor. At Safety Check, Frank assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of safety and health programs customized to clients needs; supervising subcontractor safety; providing consultation in areas of OSHA, EPA, MSHA and DOT compliance; performing accident investigations; and evaluating safety supplies for specific construction trades. Some of the projects that Frank has developed and managed the safety & health program include: Meson Detector Building Renovation Fermi National Accelerator Lab, United States Department of Energy, Chicago Pump House Renovation City of Chicago, BP Trader Building BP/Bovis Global Alliance, Walter Payton Field House Chicago Bears and the Chicago City Hall Garden Roof Project. Frank has participated in the DOT Federal Motor Carrier Training Program and the course for Electrical Safety for Construction. Frank has achieved the status of Qualified Person in Fall Protection, Scaffolding, and Excavation. Frank earned the professional designation of Certified Safety Professional (CSP) from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals by successfully passing the certification exam. He is also a Certified Asbestos Removal Supervisor. Frank is a current member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and is an expert on roofing standards and work practices. He currently provides expert testimony in litigation for various attorney firms in the Chicagoland area in the discipline of construction safety and work practices. Safety Check, Inc. participates and works closely with partnerships between different unions and OSHA. Frank has extensive knowledge of the OSHA standards and how each relates to specific industries and is a member of the CRCA Health & Safety committee and works closely with the CRCA/OSHA Alliance.
