9 Overview / Installation Service Tips TPMS SERVICE IS FOR TRAINED AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE PROFESSIONALS ONLY For items in this catalog, be sure to follow all instructions and vehicle relearn procedures included with the replacement parts and online at or In combination with electronic stability control and/or anti-lock brake systems, indirect TPMS works through the use of wheel speed sensors to indirectly monitor changes in tire pressure through the spectrum of anti-lock brake (ABS) signals, but predominantly relying on tire diameter evaluation (versus properly inflated tires, lower pressure tires have a smaller diameter and therefore rotate faster). Indirect TPMS does not contain tire pressure sensors inside the tires. Direct TPMS contains tire pressure sensors inside the tires, provides more accurate monitoring, and offers many service opportunities for the automotive technician. This catalog only covers direct TPMS replacement parts. Regardless of what type of direct TPMS sensor you use VDO OE sensors, VDO REDI- sensors, or competitive brand sensors a TPMS vehicle relearn is always required during sensor replacement as well as other sensor or tire service work. The TPMS vehicle relearn procedure is a specific set of steps established by the vehicle manufacturer to activate and confirm proper TPMS communication between the vehicle and the wheel/tire mounted sensors. Some vehicles relearn automatically when you drive, while others require a TPMS scan tool to complete the vehicle relearn. For vehicle relearn details, please visit our online cataloging resource at or Some competitive brand aftermarket sensors require an added step for sensor programming by the service technician prior to installation on a vehicle. These aftermarket sensors arrive blank or disabled and must have the proper vehicle protocol (software) loaded or configured by using a specialized sensor programming tool. VDO exclusively sells pre-programmed sensors, which includes the VDO OE TPMS sensor line and the VDO REDI- TPMS line. Because all VDO sensors already have the vehicle protocols loaded at the factory, there is never a requirement to perform sensor programming nor configuration by the service technician. All VDO sensors are designed to follow the standard OE vehicle relearn with no added steps. Be aware that there are many varieties of direct TPM Systems. Valve-type includes clamp-in sensors (threaded metal valve stem with hex nut) and snap-in sensors (rubber valve stem with sensor). Valveless sensors are typically banded (metal wheel band), but tire inner liner (glue-in) styles have recently been developed. Attempting to visually identify a TPMS-equipped vehicle by the exposed valve stem type alone can be misleading due to these sensor varieties. Valve-type sensors are mounted to the valve stem hole of the wheel. Valveless banded sensors are to be mounted 180 degrees from the valve stem hole of the wheel. Purchase a quality electronic TPMS scan tool that offers wide application coverage to help identify if a vehicle is direct TPMS-equipped, diagnose problems, and to trigger replacement sensors/perform vehicle relearns. Identify if a vehicle is or is not equipped with direct TPMS, and if the system is working properly prior to bringing the vehicle into your shop. Check the dash telltale lights and use an electronic TPMS scan tool to verify direct TPMS/verify system functionality status. If the system is not working properly, identify this to your customer before beginning service on a vehicle to avoid potentially being blamed for damage. Be sure to check the spare tire for a direct TPMS sensor. Many vehicles with direct TPMS have a sensor in full size spares. Direct TPMS sensors only need replacement if the battery fails or if the sensor is damaged. Replace the sensor seal, attachment nut, valve core, cap, and washer (service kit) during tire service. Depending on the application, these serviceable parts can vary. However, the idea remains the same replacing these parts is preventive maintenance for the TPMS sensors, and the profits help recoup those lost from standard tire valve/stem sales that typically no longer come on direct TPMS-equipped vehicles. Once a service kit part has had torque applied, do not loosen and reuse these parts. Service kit parts that have been been previously torqued must be replaced with new parts. 10 Overview / Installation Service Tips (cont'd) TPMS SERVICE IS FOR TRAINED AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE PROFESSIONALS ONLY Always use a plastic sealing valve cap. The cap acts as a secondary tire air seal, and prevents water and debris from causing internal damage to the valve stem and valve core. Aftermarket metal caps can easily corrode and seize to TPMS stems and should therefore be avoided. Do not use plain brass valve cores with TPMS sensor valves, as the valve core can easily corrode inside the valve stem leading to frozen/seized parts. It is highly recommended to only use OE-validated TPMS parts. TPMS is a mandated safety system in the USA and other parts of the world, and should not be compromised with copy-cat parts. The use of OE-validated parts helps protect your customer and your business. Use a calibrated torque tool to verify that the proper torque has been applied when installing the TPMS sensor attachment nut, valve core, and other torqued parts. The guesswork without a torque tool can lead to serious problems, including tire air loss and destroyed TPMS parts. Never continue use of corroded TPMS sensors or service kit parts. Service kit parts should be replaced at each tire service interval, and additionally require replacement at the first indication of corrosion. Never leave road salt solutions on your wheels/brakes/tpms valve stems without regularly cleaning. While some wheel cleaners are safe for aluminum (wheels, TPMS valve stems, etc.), there are also some that contain acidic detergents and should only be used with discretion, followed by thoroughly rinsing off with water. Some tire sealants and balancing compounds may interfere with the performance or reduce the longevity of TPMS sensors. Tire sealant is not meant as a permanent repair, and the tire/wheel assembly should be promptly demounted, cleaned, and professionally inspected and repaired. The TPMS sensors are to be included in this service work. If necessary, VDO TPMS sensors can be fully submerged in water for cleaning. When cleaning a TPMS sensor, be very careful to not clog or damage the tire air pressure inlet hole (typically on the hard plastic side of the sensor, and is different from the inflating hole). A cleaning instrument should never be inserted directly into the tire air pressure inlet hole for risk of damage. Nitrogen is not required, however it is perfectly acceptable for use with VDO TPMS sensors. A filtered air inflation system that removes moisture and dirt can help reduce potential corrosion to the inner wheel. TPMS is a supplemental tire safety system, and is not a replacement for regularly-scheduled tire pressure checks and maintenance. Tire pressure changes with temperature, so seasonal checks of proper inflation pressure are particularly important. Each approximate 10 degrees Fahrenheit shift will change the tire pressure by 1 PSI. Colder temperatures may therefore lead to illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure warning lamp. Always be sure to maintain the recommended tire placard pressure in a vehicle year-round. Many vehicle owners incorrectly look for the proper tire inflation pressure on the sidewall of the tire. The proper tire inflation pressure is instead found on the placard in the driver's side door jamb of the vehicle. This is the cold inflation pressure, i.e. before the car has been driven/tires are not warmed up. Changing to non-oe tires that have a different recommended inflation pressure (plus sizing is a potential example) will not change the low tire inflation warning threshold of the TPMS. If OE tires are not used, refer to the vehicle manufacturer s service guide and an authorized service professional for instructions, including the low tire pressure warning threshold reset procedure. Never reset the low tire pressure warning threshold without first verifying all safety parameters and relabeling the tire placard in the door jamb/properly noting the tire section of the owner s manual, etc. Never offer to deactivate the TPM System for a customer. Instead, help reinforce the safety, convenience, and economic value of the system to the customer. 30. Most TPMS sensors have lithium perchlorate or lithium manganese-based batteries and should be properly disposed of when the usable life has expired. Tires are the only connection a car has to the road. Their proper maintenance, including proper tire inflation pressure and regular tire rotation, therefore directly impacts all aspects of driving including handling, braking, hydroplaning avoidance, ride comfort, MPG/emissions, tire life, and overall vehicle safety. Explaining these tire facts to your customer will help build perceived value and understanding when there are necessary tire or TPMS service costs. Aside from valveless tire inner liner sensors, never use glue with TPMS sensors. Glue is not intended for installing or repairing snap-in, clamp-in, or banded sensors, and may fail in the harshness of the tire environment. For valveless tire inner liner sensors, only use the specified glue. Never use plastic zip ties with TPMS sensors. Plastic zip ties are not intended for installing or repairing sensors, and may fail in the harshness of the tire environment. Do not attempt to solder or fuse together any broken components on a TPMS sensor. When a component on a TPMS sensor is broken, there oftentimes is more damage than immediately meets the eye. Additionally, such a repair may jeopardize the proper functionality (measurement accuracy, tire air sealing, etc.) of the sensor. Never get creative with TPMS sensor swapping on vehicles. If the TPMS sensor isn t cataloged from a trusted source for your vehicle, don t use it. Do not attempt TPMS sensor battery replacement. Once you open up a TPMS sensor, the protective waterproofing, anti-static, etc. barrier is destroyed and will result in a non-functioning or highly jeopardized limited life sensor.
