WonderLands: Interior Design Trends for 2017 and Beyond Presented by Susan Schultz IWCE 2016 Las Vegas, NV Tuesday, January 19, 2016 Following are summaries of some of official trend themes that have been presented at major international shows over the past six months. MoOD 2015 The design and color trend theme for MoOD 2016, a fabric trade show for textile wholesalers, was Origins. It was based around the fact that change is coming at such a frantic pace that to refresh ourselves, we need to examine the source of all inspiration, wherever that may be. Science, technology, social and societal changes have a hold on us. They worry us; they make us happy, optimistic or insecure, wrote the MoOD trend team. No matter how we experience them, these are exciting times for those who want to and can comprehend the intensity of the changes. Origins includes three distinct trend directions Disruptive Luxury, Ancient History and Hack the Color. Disruptive Luxury The 21st century features a schism in the perception of luxury. While understated elegance is the byword for many, explicit showing off is a must in the new boomtowns formed by geopolitics of oil. Despite the enormous differences in the perception of luxury there are many similarities. At any point in time and any place in the world, the focus is on the customer experience to provide something unique to which others have no or very limited access. Luxury cannot exist without emotion. For that reason we need to use the technology where it can be most helpful: to create new materials and shapes, to translate artistic creations to a modern age and particularly to enhance the customer experience. Disruptive Luxury is reflected in soft, round shapes and warm harmonious colors.the palette is mostly warm, natural midtones, with an accent of clear mid-blue. Ancient History This trend is about preservation through innovation, rediscovering heritage and using it as a source of inspiration. Whether it s ancient archeological finds or 18th century art, these items stir the imagination, telling stories without words, sharing vanished colors and highlighting forgotten techniques. The best protection for the preservation of craftsmanship is innovation, is the motto of Chang Xia, a new Chinese partner for Hermés. Alice Archer, a textile designer, finds her inspiration
in 19th century paintings transforming the glimpses of antique needlework and fabrics she finds in these works into contemporary textiles. I want to evoke the atmosphere of historic and textured embroideries in my designs using modern age technology, allowing the workmanship to be fully industrialized, she explained. The core colors are rich, classic navy and a regal maroon, accented with a celestial blue and pearly grays. Hack the Color The trend approaches color as a source of inspiration. While color carries an aura of emotion and pure aesthetics, what others might see as bad or trendy colors, can, in combination become harmonious, or at the least, unusual and interesting. Exciting, jarring, surprising and unexpected color combinations are more important than a single use of color. Color combinations should guide the eyes, influence emotions and evoke an atmosphere of dissonance. These new trend colors steer clear of sweet pastels. Cobalt blue is the color this palette revolves around, with a sunny, warm orange, grass green and surprising purple thrown into the mix. Maison & Object, September 2015 In a change from the usual type of trend presentation at Maison&Objet, where a trend theme was previously interpreted by three different trend companies, at the September 2015 edition of the show the theme, Precious, was visualized on the show floor by only one, Elizabeth Leriche. The trend advisory council remains in place, but each edition will feature a single take on the theme. For Precious, Leriche explained that the trend board focused on new ways of transforming raw materials into exceptional pieces whose attraction extends beyond their material value. She notes that they divided the concept of Precious into five main themes the return of precious and semi-precious stones resituated in their mineral state; the renaissance of gold, freed from its bling connotations; reflective surfaces with optical structures that evoke sensory bursts and illusions; the alchemy of visionary designers; and creations that capture the fragility of existence. Heimtextil 2016 Well-being 4.0 is all about textile furnishings that exudes an aura of relaxation and calm. Everything will be geared towards offering a better life and greater well-being. At the same time, technology and science intertwined with textiles
play a key role. The number 4.0 echoes industry 4.0 and stands for smart, digital and customized solutions. In a nutshell, the idea is to trigger positive feelings and responses to stimuli at the touch of a button. We need to find ways of connecting what s natural with what s artificial, comments Lisa Douet, of WGSN Group, who helped Heimtextil develop the trend. In addition to respecting technology, we have to ensure that natural materials and handcrafted products have a place on the design shelf of the future too. The trend theme is divided into Protect, Energize, Nourish and Enrich Protect: Good For Us This trend predicts a clean aesthetic, or crisp, understated design. It goes hand in hand with a versatile range of wellness products and detox programs. As a valuable and rare commodity, silence takes center stage. It becomes an antidote to a world where we re constantly connected and increasingly feel the desire to switch off and do ourselves some good. The trend is all about protecting our physical, but above all our psychological needs. Energize: Digital Dreams People use technology to boost their feelings of well-being. The borders between being online and offline are becoming blurred. And the digital world is encroaching on our physical world. In this process, light is becoming a new way of creating intangible shapes and highlighting dynamic contours. The color spectrum pulsates between strong and weak contrasts. At the same time, bright and virtually fluorescent colors vibrate in comparison with darker electric-blue shades. This high-energy trend livens up the aesthetic with intensive brilliance and gloss, kaleidoscopic patterns and humorous, athletic designs. Nourish: Sensory Design Urban and natural landscapes converge and spawn a new, sustainable world. The focus is on making areas green. The color palette celebrates the beauty of greens, as well as dark browns and greys, in harmony with elements such as the soil and stone. Natural materials are coupled with pioneering design. Handcrafted products play a special part in the process by accentuating the beauty of the source. Enrich: Sensory Appeal The focus is placed on opulent and highly decorative elements which blend cultural references with the past and future. Ornamental ensembles and shimmering, classy materials are eye-catching. Superb, rich colors like plum and crimson abound with metallic gold, brass and bronze elements. A hint of the Orient is blended with iconic patterns which reinterpret classicism with splendor to perfection.
Milou Ket 2016/2017 Interior Trends Back to Nature The Nordic influence on interiors continues with its abundance of clear light, space, and simple, well-designed furnishings. The natural look is key in this down-to-earth theme, but because of the abundance of warm textures such as wood, paper, fur, shearling, hides, and cork, it never appears sterile or cold. The raw, industrial aesthetic is still going strong, with concrete, clay, copper, glass, and steel the main material focus. These will be seen in a variety of effects, from marbling to irregular and uneven surfaces to a worn and aged appearance. Designers are beginning to experiment with algae and fungi to inspire and develop new products, Ket notes. Colors: Gray, beige, off-white, white, yellow, walnut, and brown (including gold, copper, white, and off-white). The Art of Reflection If you re more of a contemporary enthusiast, then this is the theme for you. The atmosphere is friendly and soft without being too sweet or romantic. Tactility is important, so handmade knitting and crochet will be popular. Modern materials and furniture will have cool mirrored, transparent, and iridescent effects for a fresh, young look. We will start to see iridescent lamps overlapping colored glass shapes, facets, and reflections, says Ket. Products are partly covered by metallized or shiny glaze. Interiors will appear much more relaxed, especially in bedding, where linen will be the focus. The ever-popular copper and amber won t be going anywhere soon either. Colors: Skin, yellow, blue, lavender, rose, yellow-green, turquoise, and green (including pastel yellow, peach, shrimp, pink, lilac, acid yellow, and mint). Strategic Pops of Color A few seasons ago, it was all about making bold statements with bright color, but now the role of color has changed. Brights will feature in smaller quantities, mainly via accessories or a colored chair or sofa, with softer and less aggressive color for the rest. Art is an important source of inspiration, for instance in pop art, optical illusions, and the art of Sonia Delaunay and [Victor] Vasarely with their bright effects, says Ket. Colorful textiles and wallpaper will also be popular in this dynamic energy theme. If you re looking to include these, then she suggests artful geometry, and painterly effects such as blending watercolors or color gradients. Everything is light and airy, she says. Metal wire furniture, ceramics, and glass will continue their popularity, but the newness comes in cool,
transparent materials such as glass or warm, textured materials such as a felt and solid wool. Colors: Black and white, pastels, neutrals, and brights (including yellow, orange, pink, red, green, cobalt blue, peacock, and purple). Bohemian Moments The bohemian rhapsody style direction is for the free-spirited person who loves to sprinkle souvenirs from journeys past around a room. The main influences are from different corners of the world, namely North Africa (including Morocco), Turkey, the Middle East, India, South America, China, and Japan. Products with a strong regional look, such as the Scottish tweeds, mohairs, and checks, will also be popular. Ideas from young African designers will influence our interiors, as African ideas once inspired the designers of the Memphis movement, says Ket. Craftsmanship is an important feature, handmade aspects and vegetal-dyed products that are one-of-a-kind, imperfect, and unique. The authentic artisanal quality of products will be a focus with people seeking out traditionally made products in different handcrafted techniques. This includes inlaid mother-of-pearl products, hand-knotted carpets, hand weaves, and basketwork. Iindigo will be a very important color for this theme. Colors: Brick, orange, amber, mustard, indigo, light aubergine, deep red, and brown (including neutral colors such as off-white and beige). Aquatic Colors and Botanical Elements Interiors are going back to nature in the aquatic and botanical theme with the color palette and furniture design inspired by lakes, lagoons, and oceans. We take more and more nature into our homes, such as green plants, herbs, and images of animals, and even stuffed animals, says Ket. Fauna objects, creatures from the sea, shells, coral, and fish will also be a huge source of inspiration for design. We will see a lot of showcases and bell jars, predicts Ket. Also more abstract ideas such as landscapes; the sea, clouds, and the weather are taken as an example to develop new decorative products. In the future, we will see large-scale digital wallpapers of environmental landscapes covering entire walls. Colors: Blue-green, lime, green, lagoon green, jade, khaki green, citrus green, and dark olive (including pink, yellow, orange, red, green, and cobalt).
The New Luxe If you love an opulent and luxurious interior, then this is your year. Think rich materials such as velvets, satins, and silks, alongside woolen felt, concrete, and flannel. This style direction ( magical mystery tour ) is based on our rich cultural heritage, so historic influences play a role, including the old painting masters from the 17th century, says Ket. Portraits and still lifes are featured as large digital wall coverings, but also on smaller objects such as trays and paperweights. Metallic favorites such as copper and gold will remain, but this time they re featured alongside mysterious accent colors like magenta, purple, and deep red. The black-and-white combination will remain popular, but expect some optical illusions to enter the mix. Colors: Copper, red, purple, peacock, navy, magenta, anthracite gray, and black.
