1 GREAT CO MUNIC PLAINS October 29,2014 Attention: Guidance Counselor and Principal Great Plains Communications is pleased to offer the following programs of educational assistance during the school year: Great Plains Communications College Scholarship--The Great Plains Communications College Scholarship is offered to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend a Nebraska state or private college, to a Nebraska one- or two year trade or technical school, to Northwest Technical Institute of Goodland, Kansas, and to Mitchell Technical Institute of Mitchell, South Dakota. Up to ten $1,000 scholarships will be awarded statewide. Applicant must be a customer of Great Plains Communications and subsidiaries. Please note that we have made the following changes this year: 1. We have revised our application and made it available in an editable PDF format. We hope applicants will find this to be an easier way to complete their application. This isn' t an online application process; they will still need to print the application when completed and mail it in along with the additional information requested. 2. We have moved to an essay format for a portion of the application. Applicants are asked to provide a 250 word essay addressing specific statements listed on the application. 3. We have a new application deadline of February 1. Applications must be postmarked by Februarv 1 to be considered. An application and additional information is available on our web page at FRS College Scholarship Program - We are a member of the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS), which offers over $100,000 in scholarships to rural high school seniors who express an interest in returning to a rural area to pursue their careers. Please visit their web page at for information regarding the scholarships they offer. These scholarships have a deadline of March 3. We encourage your students to participate in these programs. 2 GREAT PLAINS COMMUNICATIONS COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY DUE FEBRUARY 1, Applicant must be a graduating senior and a customer of Great Plains Communications and subsidiaries. 2. Applicant must be accepted for admission at a Nebraska state or private college to pursue a Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree, to a Nebraska one- or two- year trade or technical school, to Northwest Technical Institute of Goodland, Kansas, or Mitchell Technical Institute of Mitchell, South Dakota for the fall term of the year the scholarship is awarded. 3. Applicant must have a very strong desire to return to their hometown (or other Great Plains Communications community) to pursue their career. 4. Applicant must explain career goals. 5. Applicant must complete the required application form and see that all forms are turned in by February 1, HOW TO APPLY 1. Up to ten $1, scholarships will be awarded statewide each year. 2. Winners will be selected by a qualified committee. 3. 4 ESSAY QUESTIONS GREAT PLAINS COMMUNICATIONS SCHOLARSHIP Each applicant should address the statements listed below in an essay format. The essay must be typed, double-spaced, and contain approximately 250 words. Essays will be evaluated on technical accuracy (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.) and how clearly the student responds to the following statements: 1. Describe how living in a rural community has shaped you as an individual. 2. Explain the importance of your major in today s society and how it contributes to your plans to pursue your career in your own or other rural Nebraska community. Checklist of items necessary for your application to be complete: I have included a copy of my most recent grade transcript with my application. I have included an essay addressing the requested statements. I have secured two people to write recommendations. These recommendations will be sent separately. My references are and.
