1 Pharm Tech Course Syllabus Coursework 101 INTRODUCTION TO PHARMACY INSTRUCTOR CONTACT INFORMATION: Instructor s Name: Office Phone: Office Hours: COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the role of the pharmacy technician in a retail, or institutional pharmacy. Students are also introduced to the concept of direct patient care, the hospital drug delivery system, unit dose packaging system, ward stocks, narcotic disposal, and community pharmacy operations. Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to interpret and evaluate hospital orders, understand the technical duties related to dispensing over-the-counter drugs in a retail pharmacy, as well as the introduction of quality assurance and protocol. Students are introduced to the profound influence that medication laws, standards, and regulations have on practice. Students are introduced to federal and state laws governing the practice of pharmacy. Students will be introduced to the skills necessary to identify unethical behaviors, possible solutions, and analyze appropriate solutions using ethical decision-making models, while noting the laws and regulations that govern the practice. COURSE PRE-REQUISITE None ACADEMIC CLOCK HOURS Total Clock Hours: 30 (20 hours lecture; 10 hours lab) LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Describe the origins of Pharmacy. Describe the four stages of development of the pharmacy profession in the twentieth century. Enumerate the functions of the pharmacist. Discuss the educational curriculum for today s pharmacy student. Explain the licensing requirements for pharmacists. Identify the duties and work environments of the pharmacy technician. Differentiate among the various kinds of pharmacies. Know the components of the prescription, including the commonly used abbreviations. Understand the rights of correct drug administration, and the immunization process. Recognize common dosage forms, and know the routes of administration. Recognize factors that influence the effects of drugs, particularly in the elderly and pediatric populations. Know the effects natural chemicals have on drug action and response. Define the term drug and distinguish between over-the-counter and legend drugs. Explain the parts of a National Drug Code Number. SI-1

2 Categorize drugs by source as natural, synthetic, synthesized, or semi-synthetic. Explain the uses of drugs as therapeutic, pharmacodynamic, diagnostic, prophylactic, and destructive agents. Define and differentiate between the terms dose form and delivery system. Enumerate and explain the properties and identify advantages and disadvantages of the major dose forms and delivery systems for drugs. Identify the function of various commonly used pharmaceutical reference texts. Define the phrase route of administration. Identify the factors that can influence the route of administration. Define the terms local use and systemic use, and explain how these uses are considered when a prescriber selects a drug for a particular patient. List the major routes of administration and the advantages and disadvantages associated with each dose form. Enumerate typical duties of pharmacy technicians with regard to dispensing of over-thecounter and prescription drugs. Explain the typical procedures for receiving and reviewing prescriptions. Explain the use of computers in the pharmacy. Discuss drug coverage for Medicaid, Medicare, and Work Comp patients. Identify procedures for inventory management, including the purchasing, receiving, and storage of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Identify procedures for the purchasing, receiving, storage, and inventory control of controlled-drug substances. Distinguish among common law, statutory law, regulatory or administrative law, ethics, and professional standards. Explain the potential for tort actions under the common law related to, negligence, and other forms of malpractice. List and describe the major effects on the pharmacy of the major pieces of statutory federal drug law in the 20th century. Discuss the role of the Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration, the United States Pharmacopeia convention, and state boards of pharmacy. 7 Pharm Tech Course Syllabus Coursework 102 Pharmacology Theory & Calculations Part I INSTRUCTOR CONTACT INFORMATION: INSTRUCTOR S NAME: Office Phone: Office Hours: COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides students with an understanding of the basic pharmacy calculations, interpret Roman and Arabic numbers and read scientific notation. It will also introduce students to the pharmacology that deals with causes, cures, and treatment of common ailments using both prescription and OTC drugs and their different mechanisms of action. Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to discuss Myasthenia Gravis, the Attention-Deficit Disorders, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Alzheimer s Disease, and generic and trade drugs that are used for treatment. While determining the correct delivery system, students will be made aware of the side effects, dosage forms, routes, and proper use of noted drugs. COURSE PRE-REQUISITE None ACADEMIC CLOCK HOURS Total Clock Hours: 30 hours ( 20 hours lecture; 10 hours lab) Describe the process for fingerprinting and the fees involved. Describe the project regarding the difference between herbal remedies and prescription drugs. PTCE preparation. Understand fractions and be able to compare them, express them as decimals, and find common denominators. Manipulate fractions by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing them. Interpret Roman and Arabic numbers and convert values between the two systems. Read scientific notation and convert large and smaller numbers to them. Determine the value of a decimal and accurately round off decimal values. Estimate drug doses in order to check accuracy of final calculations. Perform calculations while retaining accuracy and the correct number of significant figures. Understand the differences between fungi and viruses; and why the drugs used to treat them must have very different mechanisms of action. SI-7

8 Differentiate antifungals, antiviral, and antiretrovirals by their indications, therapeutic effects, side effects, dosages, and administration. Use antifungal, antiviral, and antiretroviral terminology correctly in written and oral communication. Understand brand name, generic name, classification, and indication for use of the assigned 50 drugs from the Top 200 prescription drugs of 2011 (Drugs ). Define common prefixes related to medicine and the pharmacy. Complete a drug product information form. Alert pharmacist regarding drug interactions or allergy warnings. Generate the proper prescription label and auxiliary label(s). Advise the patient or caregiver regarding the appropriate techniques for administering and disposing of Fentanyl patches. Use antibiotic and general drug terminology correctly in written and oral communication. Identify the elements of a complete prescription order. Apply calculation operations in handling prescription orders. Recognize the elements of a medication label. Apply calculation operations to information on medication labels. Know what information is required on a patient profile. Identify errors on a patient profile form. Outline smoking cessation plans and supportive therapy. Define common prefixes in preparation for the PTCE. Identify the basic units and prefixes of the metric system. Convert units within the metric system by moving the decimal place, using the ratioproportion method, and using the dimensional analysis method. Calculate drug doses using the ratio-proportion and dimensional analysis methods. Calculate doses based on weight and body surface area (BSA). Emphasis will be placed on causes, cures, and treatment of common ailments using both prescription and OTC drugs. Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to discuss pathologies of the central nervous system, respiratory, gastrointestinal and urinary systems, and generic and trade drugs that are used for treatment. While determining the correct delivery system, students will be made aware of the side effects, dosage forms, routes, and proper use of noted drugs.
