5 E nvironm ental Science Program m e 1. Introduction This student handbook provides general information about the Environmental Science Programme under the Division of Science and Technology, BNU-HKBU United International College. Students can also find specific information about the programme structure, degree requirements, grading scheme, curriculum, etc. in this handbook. Students should read this handbook carefully and discuss any queries with their mentor, teacher, Programme Coordinator, or the Division Dean. The content of this handbook is for reference only, and is subject to change without notice. 1.1 Title Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Environmental Science 1.2 Philosophy/Rationale The environmental impact of human society, the management of natural resources, sustainability, and the decreasing biodiversity of our planet are major concerns. This is particularly true in Southern China, such as the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, which is one of the world s fastest growing economic regions. This rapid growth has led to a fast expansion of cities and urban centers into the rural areas, bringing along a tremendous amount of construction and industrial activity. This has led to environmental degradation, and ultimately affects the health of people. To ensure good environmental quality and standard of living, well thought-out environmental policies and plans for sustainable economic development are required at the central, provincial, and government levels. Professionals well-versed in the latest environmental technology and corporate management concepts are thus in great demand. We believe that a multidisciplinary approach is essential to balance the environmental quality required for healthy living with the rapid industrial growth required for economic prosperity. The course maintains a current approach, encompassing the latest scientific, theoretical, technological and political developments. The approach of formulating policies for sustainable development must be based on well-rounded scientific knowledge of the environment, as well as a deep understanding of the social, economic, political and geographical aspects of the region. Currently there is a dearth of professionals with the required scientific knowledge and managerial skills to deal with the diverse environmental problems in China, and this course trains professionals who can provide solutions to these problems through the latest advances in science and technology, together with good environmental management, to ensure environmentally sustainable development for this region

17 E nvironm ental Science Program m e 6.2 Teaching and Learning Most core (Year 1 and 2) subjects will be taught via formal lectures that are supplemented by small group tutorial classes. While basic principles and theoretical concepts are expounded in formal lectures, problem-solving exercises will be the main activity in the tutorial classes. For the more advanced (Year and 4) or topical course subjects, a more interactive style of teaching will be adopted where formal lecturing will be punctuated by ample discussion. The lecturing part is aimed at motivating a particular topic and providing pertinent information, including the basic theory, for the subsequent open discussion among students and instructor. Case studies, when available, will be used both to reinforce the theoretical concepts learnt as well as to illustrate how basic principles can be applied in solving real-life problems. This teaching method is intended to stimulate critical thinking and to foster the development of problem-solving skills. Oral or poster presentations will be used to allow students to sharpen their communicative and presentation skills. The sequence of subjects is arranged in such a way that fundamental concepts and basic principles in various supporting disciplines of environmental science are covered first. Subjects that are of more advanced, specialized or topical nature are offered in the final year. In addition, relevant laboratory exercises are designed to complement key core lecture subjects. We believe that a better grasp of the basic principles learnt in lectures can only be realized through actual laboratory verification. Field studies are also emphasized as they allow students to get a first-hand picture on the various environmental problems, as well as the successes of advanced remediation methods. For instance, in one laboratory subject, namely, Environmental Study Laboratory, an actual field study conducted on a specific local site is required for every student in addition to the conventional laboratory exercises. All students are expected to complete a research project in their final year of study. This final year project is regarded as a capstone subject in the curriculum. We believe that by working through an independent research project, under the close supervision of an academic staff, a student can apply what he/she has learnt in class and put them into real practice of solving actual environmental problems. Through this experience, he/she can gradually evolve to become an environmental professional; one who is able to integrate knowledge acquired from various disciplines to analyze a problem systematically and devise a creative and effective solution
