2014 STAR RATINGS REPORT Travel Insurance
August 2014 TRAVEL INSURANCE IN THIS REPORT By way of 12,387 quotes, we research and rate 209 domestic and international travel insurance products provided by 65 institutions to find which give outstanding value. Stay-at-home-hols Australians are an adventurous bunch but that doesn t mean we re constantly off gallavanting around the world. With such a vast island underneath our very feet, domestic travel is still extremely popular. According to Tourism Research Australia, domestic tourism is worth almost $70 billion (which is about 70% of total tourism expenditure), so there are plenty of us doing it and plenty of us taking out insurance for it. So what does a domestic insurance policy commonly cover you for? Luggage this may also be covered by your home and contents insurance policy, at least for some items. if you have to cancel your trip due to sudden illness or accident, say, or your employer suddenly cancelling your leave, it s a weight off your mind if you have a policy in place to make sure you don t end up out of pocket. Some other reasons for cancellation could be a natural disaster at your destination or at home, or even being called up for jury duty. Rental vehicle excess Most domestic policies will cover at least $2,500 of your rental vehicle excess (the excess is the out-of-pocket cost of you pranging your rental vehicle or having some other mishap). Rental vehicle excesses are commonly set at a level higher than the insurance coverage available, but every bit helps! Legal liability The vast majority of policies researched include coverage for legal liability. Don t take this as an excuse to break the law, though you may end up invalidating your policy! 1
What does it cost? The good news is that, on average, the cost to insure your trip around Australia is minimal certainly in comparison to the cost of your overall holiday. For a couple, the insurance for a five-day jaunt will set you back around $94 on average. A 10-day trip will be around $117 and 21 days of R&R will be just $163 on average. And the best news of all? It doesn t matter where you re going: Canberra or Cape York, Alice Springs or Adelaide, the price will be the same. The tables below detail the minimum, maximum and average cost of domestic travel insurance that CANSTAR calculated for the 2014 Travel Insurance Star Ratings. 5 days cover Minimum Maximum Average Single $23.38 $ $49.55 Couple $46.76 $ $94.23 Family $46.76 $ $ days cover Minimum Maximum Average Single $29.25 $ $61.50 Couple $58.50 $ $ Family $58.50 $ $ days cover Minimum Maximum Average Single $39.60 $ $86.15 Couple $76.43 $ $ Family $76.43 $ $ T Source: CANSTAR Travel Insurance Star Ratings Average is based on the premiums available for included insurers. All premiums have been based on a $100 excess. Whether you re going to Melbourne or the outback, the price of your insurance will be the same 2
Beware Travellers need to be aware of exclusions. If you re planning an adventure trip, you ll need to disclose that upon application and read the terms and conditions carefully! Things such as skiing, scuba diving, bungee jumping and rock climbing may not be covered. Also, don t fall into the trap of thinking that travel insurance is a substitute for health insurance. There is no medical cover within most domestic travel insurance policies. Who provides outstanding value? Not all travellers are the same and not all have the same requirements. CANSTAR look at three common traveller profiles: a single person, a couple (based on two adults who travel together) and a family consisting of two adults and their two children. In terms of eligibility, all domestic travel insurers must provide a comprehensive travel insurance policy that, at a minimum, covers luggage and personal effects, cancellation fees and loss of deposit. The insurer must also provide a 24-hour helpline and provide the ability to extend cover while travelling. While a competitive price will always be important, it s important to get the cover you need, not just the cheapest premium. To determine true value, we look for the right balance between price and product features based on 13 different categories. Further details in the methodology (page 10). This year, CANSTAR is pleased to announce that Insure and Go and Virgin Australia have both retained last year s mantle to take the 2014 Outstanding Value Domestic Travel Insurance award. For the second year in a row, Insure and Go has stormed up the charts to be a 2014 Outstanding Value Travel Insurance winner. It has cemented its position this year with a winning combination of price and features and has a five-star rating across all domestic profiles. Features of particular note include: Ability to claim online/over the phone Up to $5,000 for luggage and personal effects Up to $10,000 for cancellation and loss of deposits Up to $5,000 for unexpected travel expense/trip disruption. Domestic Travel Insurance Virgin Australia has now run up an impressive five years in a row as winner for outstanding value domestic travel insurance and has maintained a five-star rating across all domestic profiles. Truly an outstanding result. In addition to pricing, features that particularly impressed our Research team included: Ability to claim online and over the phone No excess applicable when making claims Resumption of trip cover Unlimited cancellation fees and loss of deposit Up to $50,000 unexpected travel and accommodation expenses. 3
Up, up and away In addition to hanging out at home, many Aussies also spend a fair bit of time hanging out at international airports. According to the most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures, Australian residents took almost nine million short-term overseas trip in the year to June In terms of popularity, our most common destinations are New Zealand, Indonesia and the USA. We re also partial to Thailand, the UK and China. All very different destinations with unique and fascinating cultures. One thing they do have in common, though, is the hit to your hip pocket if you fall ill or are injured and don t have travel insurance! What do international travel insurance policies commonly cover you for? Medical/emergency dental Depending on your destination, medical expenses could end up costing your house. Therefore ensuring that you have great value medical and emergency cover is vital. Typically cover will include hospital admission, emergency care and medical evacuation. Unless it is an emergency situation, we recommend that you telephone your insurer prior to any treatment to check your coverage. If tragedy strikes while you are away, repatriation covers the cost of flying your body and belongings back to Australia. Some travel insurance funds also pay a separate sum insured upon death, as well as funeral expenses. Luggage and travel documents Stolen camera or wallet or even suitcase. Replacement of luggage and travel documents are the most commonly known and most commonly claimed travel insurance benefit. Ironically, it is probably the lowest-cost type of claim. cover If you have to cancel your trip due to sudden illness or accident, or even leave cancellation, you want to ensure that you re covered. Particularly if you re heading to a luxury destination. Political unrest and acts of terrorism may also be grounds to cancel and claim, although this varies from event to event. Note that some policies do not have unlimited cancellation cover so ensure that the amount you have purchased is sufficient for the total cost of your holidays. Legal liability Again, the vast majority of policies researched include coverage for legal liability, commonly up to an amount of several million. 4
What does it cost? In the scheme of things, travel insurance is a very small component of the overall cost of your holiday. Unlike domestic travel insurance, the cost of international travel insurance will differ according to your destination. For a 10-day overseas jaunt, Aussie couples can expect to pay average travel insurance premiums of $146 for Bali, $170 for Thailand, $228 for the USA and $181 for the UK. The tables below detail the minimum, maximum and average cost of international travel insurance for a 10-day period, as calculated by CANSTAR for the 2014 Travel Insurance Star Ratings. Bali Minimum Maximum Average Single $32.61 $ $78.64 Couple $61.96 $ $ Family $65.22 $ $ Brazil Minimum Maximum Average Single $49.84 $ $ Couple $94.70 $ $ Family $99.68 $ $ China Minimum Maximum Average Single $41.92 $ $94.57 Couple $79.65 $ $ Family $83.84 $ $ France Minimum Maximum Average Single $41.92 $ $99.71 Couple $79.65 $ $ Family $83.84 $ $
Japan Minimum Maximum Average Single $49.84 $ $ Couple $94.70 $ $ Family $99.68 $ $ South Africa Minimum Maximum Average Single $41.92 $ $ Couple $79.65 $ $ Family $83.84 $ $ Thailand Minimum Maximum Average Single $41.92 $ $91.90 Couple $79.65 $ $ Family $83.84 $ $ UK Minimum Maximum Average Single $41.92 $ $96.39 Couple $79.65 $ $ Family $83.84 $ $ USA Minimum Maximum Average Single $49.84 $ $ Couple $94.70 $ $ Family $99.68 $ $
Beware Again, exclusions can be a big danger area for unwary globetrotters. No travel policy will cover you for every single thing that might go wrong while you re away, so it s important to read the policy conditions of your selected policy to be aware of any exclusions that may apply. Some common international travel insurance exclusions are: High risk countries. Check the government s Smart Traveller website for the travel advisory status of your destination. Countries and areas deemed do not travel may not be covered under your policy. Risky behaviour. Any injury or loss caused by reckless behaviour while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, except a drug prescribed to you by a medical adviser and taken in accordance with their instructions, will probably be excluded from cover. The moral? If you think it could be a dumb idea, don t do it. High-value items. Many policies will have a dollar limit claimable for each item; this dollar limit may not cover the replacement cost. Notification period. A policy may specify that an insured event needs to be notified to them within a specified timeframe (24 hours for example). It s important to be aware of the notification period under your policy and stick to it. Loss of items left unattended. It s common sense to keep an eye on your belongings. Leaving your wallet and keys wrapped in a towel on the beach while you take a quick swim, leaving belongings hidden in a shared room or losing valuables from your checked-in luggage may all be excluded from cover. Pre-existing medical conditions. Even conditions that have been undiagnosed but for which you have experienced symptoms may not be covered. It s also important to disclose the pre-existing conditions of your close relatives, if this may have an impact on your travel. and for adventure lovers Another common exclusion is hazardous pursuits. Activities such as motorbike riding, skiing, scuba diving, bungee jumping and hang-gliding may be excluded from a standard policy. However, these can often be added for an additional premium. This table lists the number of international travel insurance policies researched by CANSTAR that cover certain common hazardous pursuits as either standard (automatically included within the policy), optional (may be insured for an additional premium, upon agreement) or not covered at all. Activity Standard Optional Not included International waters Motor cycle, scooter, jet ski Non-professional sporting trip Rock climbing Snow sport Water sport Be sure to read the fine print on your policy. Some policies may cover motor cycle accidents but only if the person operating the motor cycle is appropriately licensed in Australia. If you are concerned about any activity that you are thinking of doing, contact your travel insurance provider beforehand to double check your coverage. 7
Who provides outstanding value? When it comes to international travel insurance, it s a crowded and competitive market. This year for the first time CANSTAR has awarded three insurance providers with the outstanding value international travel insurance accolade. Last year s winner, Southern Cross Travel Insurance, stood out from the crowd yet again, as did Insure and Go (which has also scooped the domestic travel insurance award) and new entrant to our ratings Travel Insurance Direct. All three providers were successful thanks to their mix of competitive premium and impressive features. Insure and Go As well as its success in the domestic travel insurance ratings, Insure and Go has also put together a winning combination of price and features in CANSTAR s international travel insurance ratings. In addition to price, some features of note include: Pregnancy cover up to 32 weeks. For many international travel insurance policies, coverage for those who are pregnant ceases at around the 20-week mark. age for up to 32 weeks is a standout feature. Insure and Go also offers unlimited medical and unlimited cancellation fees and loss of deposit. Collapse of airline. A differentiating feature of Insure and Go is the provision of some coverage for scheduled airline failure. Subject to some conditions, the policy will pay for a one-way airfare home if your original airline becomes insolvent. International Travel Insurance Southern Cross Travel Insurance In winning the 2014 outstanding value international travel insurance award, Southern Cross Travel has made it an impressive five years in a row. In terms of pricing, Southern Cross Travel is consistently in the top 10 providers surveyed across all destinations and this price is combined with some impressive features. Of note: Unlimited overseas medical cover and repatriation, plus $750 of overseas dental cover per person. With overseas medical costs potentially running into the hundreds of thousands, unlimited cover helps provide peace of mind for unlucky travellers. The ability to claim online is another great feature that can save time and the hassle of paperwork while you are still overseas. Rental vehicle excess of $5,000 as standard. Traffic bingles while overseas can be common and Southern Cross will cover the first $5,000 of rental vehicle excess, substantially higher than the average. You will still have to pay the cost of excess upfront, but Southern Cross will reimburse up to $5,000 upon your return. Travel Insurance Direct This is a first-time win for Travel Insurance Direct (TID), which is on the back of some competitive pricing across all destinations as well as a good feature offering. In terms of price, TID is also consistently in the top 10 providers surveyed across all destinations. When it comes to features, the following caught the eye of our Research team: Nil excess available. If you don t want to be out of pocket in the event of a claim, TID gives you the option to buy out or reduce your excess via an additional premium. Unlimited medical and unlimited cancellation fees and loss of deposit. While all three winners do have unlimited medical cover, unlimited cancellation cover is less common. Standard cover for diabetes. With the incidence of diabetes soaring in Australia, offering standard cover for diabetes (provided the traveller s condition is stable) can potentially benefit many travellers. CANSTAR would like to congratulate all the winners on their outstanding achievement. 8

METHODOLOGY TRAVEL INSURANCE STAR RATINGS METHODOLOGY What are the CANSTAR Travel Insurance Star Ratings? CANSTAR Travel Insurance Star Ratings involve a sophisticated rating methodology, unique to CANSTAR, that compares travel insurance products in Australia. CANSTAR star ratings provide a transparent analysis of a shortlist of travel insurance products, enabling consumers to narrow their search to products that have been independently assessed and ranked. The results are reflected in a consumer-friendly five-star concept, with five stars signifying outstanding value offered by the product. What types of products are evaluated in the CANSTAR Travel Insurance Star Ratings? CANSTAR rates a number of international and domestic travel insurance policies covering the following profile types and destinations: Who? Single Couple Family Where? Asia Australia Europe Pacific Worldwide China Bali Thailand Japan UK France New Zealand Fiji Brazil South Africa USA 10
For institutions to be eligible for the international travel insurance star ratings, the policy must be a comprehensive policy. This means it must meet certain basic feature requirements in order to be included in the ratings. The requirements are: medical and hospital cover (international only) and evacuation services (international only) Luggage and personal effects fees and loss of deposit How are the CANSTAR Travel Insurance Star Ratings calculated? Each travel insurance product reviewed for the CANSTAR Travel Insurance Star Ratings is awarded points for its comparative pricing and for the array of positive features attached to the product. Points are aggregated to achieve a Pricing score and a Features score. To arrive at the total score, CANSTAR applies a weight against the Pricing and Features scores. This weight will vary from profile to profile and will reflect the relative importance of either costs or features in determining the best product. This method can be summarised as: TOTAL SCORE = PRICING + FEATURES SCORE Pricing score 60% Average premium Based on three different periods of travel Features score 40% features Based on 13 different feature categories Policy conditions Policy inclusions Indexed Score with the best pricing or features will receive a full score Pricing score The pricing score for each profile is based on guidelines outlined below. Quotes within the profile types and destinations were used to determine the minimum average premium in each profile. This was then indexed against each policy premium and weighted by its 60% weighting to determine final pricing score. Profile types Quotes were based on the three profile types: Single, Couple and Family. These travellers were based on: 40-year-old adult/s If family, a 15-year-old child and an 11-year-old child NSW as the state of residence 11
Travel period The travel periods used to find the average premium to Japan, South Africa, China, Bali, Thailand, UK, France, USA and Brazil are as follows: Profile Period of travel Departing date Returning date Days 10 days 1 June June 2014 Weeks 21 days 1 June June 2014 Months 42 days 1 June July 2014 The travel periods used to find the average premium to Australia, Fiji and New Zealand are as follows: Profile Period of travel Departing date Returning date Days 5 days 1 June June 2014 Short holiday 10 days 1 June June 2014 Long holiday 21 days 1 June June 2014 Excesses To ensure fair comparison between providers, premiums were quoted at the standard excess amount of $100. For policies that did not have the option of $100 standard excess, premiums were adjusted based on industry-based actuarial data. Features score Features are split into different sub-categories that are allocated appropriate weights. Based on the points received, each individual policy receives a total features score. The total score is then weighted against the weights provided in the table below for their respective profile feature score. The feature score is then indexed and weighted by its 40% weighting to provide the final features score. 15 What is the CANSTAR Travel Insurance Award? In conjunction with the travel star ratings, CANSTAR has awarded two separate awards to the insurers who provide outstanding value in the following categories: These are awarded to the insurers that provide the best combination of products across the travel insurance star ratings profiles, as well as excelling in a range of travel destinations and features. The award aims to give recognition to those insurers who offer quality products with desirable features to travellers in a particular category. For institutions to be eligible for the overall awards, they must meet certain minimum requirements. The requirements are as follows: 24-hour helpline available Ability to extend cover while travelling $25 million + family overseas medical and hospital cover (international only) $5 million + family cover for repatriation and evacuation services (international only) How is the CANSTAR Travel Insurance Award calculated? The maximum total score of each country profile is taken from each insurer and is indexed against the maximum possible top score in each country profile. This produces an indexed score which is then weighted against the profile type weights provided in the methodology tree below. Each of the profile type scores is then summed to determine the final award winner in both categories. Single profiles 35% Couple profiles 35% Family profiles 30% For international travel insurance we consider 11 international destinations and Australia for domestic travel insurance Indexed Score with the best pricing or features will receive a full score 14
How are the stars awarded? The total score received for each profile ranks the products. The stars are then awarded based on the distribution of the scores according to the following guidelines. As you can see, only the products that obtain a score in the top 10% of the score distribution receive a five-star rating. The results are reflected in a consumer-friendly five-star concept, with five stars denoting an outstanding product. Does CANSTAR rate all products available in the market? We endeavour to include the majority of product providers in the market and to compare the product features most relevant to consumers in our ratings. However, this process is not always possible and it may be that not every product in the market is included in the rating nor every feature compared that is relevant to you. How often are products reviewed for star ratings purposes? All ratings are fully recalculated every 12 months, based on the latest submissions from each institution. CANSTAR also monitors changes on an ongoing basis. Does CANSTAR rate other product areas? CANSTAR researches, compares and rates the suite of banking and insurance products listed below. These star ratings use similar methodologies to guarantee quality, consistency and transparency. Results are freely available to consumers who use the star ratings as a guide to product excellence. The use of similar star ratings logos also builds consumer recognition of quality products across all categories.
