1 Ruby Hammond P.O. Box 27 Hanapepe, HI (cell) EDUCATION College: Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, TN B.S. in Animal Biology, minor: Chemistry, June 2004 GPA: 3.4 out of 4.0; 145 semester hours EMPLOYMENT Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project 01/2011-present Hanapepe, HI Graduate Student/Endangered Forest Bird Field Assistant Supervisor: Lisa Crampton, Survey and monitor forest bird communities in disturbed and undisturbed habitats of the Alakai Wilderness on the Island of Kauai. Conduct VCP (Variable Circular Plot) counts, supervise mist-netting stations to target the capture of three critically endangered species: Puaiohi (Myadestes palmeri), Akikiki (Oreomystis bairdi), and Akeke e (Loxops caeruleirostris). Map territories of the Akikiki and Akeke e while searching for and monitoring nests of marked and unmarked birds. Construct maps and organize data spatially using ArcMap Assist in data analyses and manipulation and present research at both professional meetings and outreach events. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 02/ /2011 Honolulu, HI Biological Science Technician (GS-05) Supervisor: Cindy Rehkemper, Cindy_rehkemper@fws.gov, Planned and implemented endangered species research and habitat restoration efforts on the remote island of Laysan in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument). Major duties included leading crew of four in invasive species eradication and native species population monitoring, data analysis and report writing, protocol composition and updating, coordinating logistics, presenting research at professional meetings and conferences, and maintenance of camp and equipment. Goals of management efforts and population monitoring are to restore the island to a pristine and self-sustaining ecosystem.

2 Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project 11/ /2009 Makawao, HI Ornithological Research Assistant Supervisor: David Leonard, Planned, supervised, and implemented field research methods such as variable circular plot surveys, nest searching and monitoring, mist netting, and color banding to gather data on the avian populations within the native rainforest at Maui, Hawaii. Other large components of my position away from the field were coordinating field logistics, GIS (geographical information system) database management, manuscript composition, data analysis, leading on seabird surveys and banding, fundraising, and outreach. Major goals of the project are to investigate the causes of native forest bird decline and to implement management techniques for the conservation of all vulnerable forest birds on Maui. Dixie Environmental Services Company 10/2007 Magnolia, TX Seasonal Biologist Supervisor: Gary Kowalski, Led a field crew of 3 in the set-up of feeding stations for the American Burying Beetle. Cages were set up and distributed around areas of seismic activity in Oklahoma in order to bait away endangered American Burying Beetles from potentially harmful oil drilling practices. Wildlife Conservation Society 05/ /2007 Bronx, NY Field Research Associate Supervisor: Joe Liebezeit, jliebezeit@wcs.org, Led nest searching and monitoring efforts approximately 10 miles south of Teshekpuck Lake at the North Slope of Alaska. Nests were primarily found using behavioral cues of adult birds. Rope-dragging and walking through plots were methods used to flush birds from nests. Egg flotation, egg candling, and nestling age estimation were techniques used to determine nest stage, hatch date, and fledge date. Predator counts and nest conditions at termination were used to estimate percent nest depredation. Evaluations of the percentage of nest depredation were compared to an identical study in the human impacted oil fields of Prudhoe Bay. Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project 01/ /2007 Makawao, HI Research Technician Supervisor: Kirsty Swinnerton, kirsty.swinnerton@islandconservation.org, Conducted nesting and population monitoring surveys of the critically endangered Maui Parrotbill in a high-elevation rainforest as crew leader. Conducted GIS data analysis to determine home ranges of the Maui Parrotbill and the Maui Creeper using color band resight data. Set-up and maintained banding stations for the capture of all local species. Maintained a predator control grid. This research gathered information on the native forest birds to help establish conservation goals and to implement proper management efforts.

3 Wildlife Division, State of Connecticut 07/ /2006 North Franklin, CT Avian Influenza Technician Supervisor: Min Huang, Trapped, banded, and swabbed the cloacae of waterfowl and shorebirds along the Connecticut coastline that could have potentially been exposed to Avian Influenza. Trapping mechanisms included walk-in traps, floating traps, cannon nets, rocket nets, woosh nets, and mist nets. Created and edited maps using ArcGIS 3.1. Captured and aided with the banding of raptors during fall migration. Limited experience with radio tracking Canada Geese. The Nature Conservancy 02/ /2006 Fort Hood, TX Seasonal Field Biologist Supervisor: Rebecca Peak, Searched for and monitored the nests of the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler to aid in the assessment of their productivity. Ran a mist-netting station and banded several local species of birds including the Golden-cheeked Warbler. Resighted color banded Golden-cheeked Warblers in order to determine home range area. Used ArcGIS to verify resight locations. Limited experience with radio-tracking Black Rat Snakes. Environmental Science Corporation 09/ /2006 Mt. Juliet, TN Chemist Supervisor: Jim Burns, jburns@envsci.com, x2137 Supervised 3 rd shift metals laboratory. Operated instruments such as the ICP-OES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer), ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer), and Cold Vapor Atomic Analyzer to detect concentration of 27 metallic elements in waste water, ground water, and soil samples. Duties outside of the laboratory included quality control, data analysis, report writing, and supervising the sample preparation lab. Middle Tennessee State University 01/ /2004 Murfreesboro, TN Research Assistant Supervisor: Brian T. Miller, bmiller@mtsu.edu, Built and set up contraptions such as drift fencing, pitfall traps, and walk-in traps. Captured and surveyed local amphibians and reptiles in order to characterize the herpetofauna of an historical site in Middle Tennessee. The Nature Conservancy 12/ /2005 Nashville, TN Volunteer Supervisor: Heather Garland, raremyotis@bellsouth.net Gathered research of the invertebrate cave fauna throughout the state of Tennessee and compiled this information into a database. Assisted with cave gate building to protect bats from human disturbance in Tennessee and Virginia.

4 U.S. Forest Service, Department of Agriculture 05/ /2003 Albuquerque, NM Biological Science Technician (GS-04) Supervisor: Billy Leonard, Conducted avian point counts, captured and surveyed small mammals, performed census surveys of owls, and performed general vegetation surveys. This research investigated the effects of forest thinning on avian and small mammal communities. Alaska Bird Observatory 06/ /2002 Fairbanks, AK Bird Census Biologist Supervisor: Carol Erwin, Conducted avian point counts in extremely remote areas of Denali National Park. This study investigated the effects of tourism in Denali National Park on avian inhabitants. Volunteered at Creamers Field banding station. Assisted with King Salmon capture (gill net) and surveying. South Carolina DNR, Marine Resources Division 09/ /1999 Charleston, SC Data Technician Supervisor: George Riekerk, Performed literature searches, organized data into charts and graphs using Microsoft Excel, and entered data for the Ashepoo Combahee Edisto River Basin Characterization Project, providing the public with an online characterization of the flora and fauna of the area.
