2 Science, Engineering, Mathematics & Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) Cleveland SEMAA (Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Aerospace Academy) at Cuyahoga Community College, Metro Campus, is a national, innovative project designed to increase participation and retention of historically underrepresented K-12 youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM. SEMAA is open to students in grades K-12 and is not limited by academic progress, school district or county. Enrollment is offered at no cost! SEMAA is conducted in three, seven-week Saturday sessions during the academic year (fall, winter and spring) and in a weeklong ½ day summer camp. K-12 students are allowed to participate once during the academic year and again during the summer session. Grade Course SEMAA Curriculum Content by Grade Title K Rocketeers Student explore dressing and traveling in space as they journey to the moon. 1 st Star Scouts Students explore the implications of microgravity and air pressure for human space travel. 2 nd Comet Busters Students explore the composition/potential effects of asteroids, comets and meteors in space. 3 rd Space Travelers Student explore eating and working in space as they enlist in astronaut training and construct a model for an International Space station. 4 th Junior Astronauts Students explore the effects of space travel on the human body, eating in space and the differential uses of simple machines. 5 th Mars Explorers Students explore the sizes, gravity factors and other physical characteristics of the planers as they construct a simulated solar system different from our own. 6 th Moon Walkers Students explore the living conditions and topographic features of Mars as they operate a remote control vehicle on a simulated Martian surface. 7 th Young Aviators Students explore the concept of flight as they design and launch a hot air balloon. 8 th Pilots Students explore the control surfaces of conventional aircraft and collect estimates of local weather conditional aircraft and collect estimates of local weather conditions as they conduct a cross-country flight in virtual reality. 9 th Space Scientists Students explore the concept of microgravity as they record and analyze acceleration environments. 10 th Researchers Students explore the concept of microgravity as they record and analyze 11 th & 12th Research Consultants & Interns candle flame properties in freefall. Students engage in authentic research as they embark on small group investigations of real world challenges/issues. Students explore mentorship and internship experiences prior to post-secondary enrollment.
