1 Retirement income in Australia The development of adequacy over time Joint research by Towers Watson and The University of Melbourne Presented by John Burnett 7 July 2015
2 Background Purpose of research Towers Watson and The University of Melbourne are conducting joint research into the adequacy of retirement incomes based on a representative sample of the Australian population providing regular measurement points. This research (which builds on our previous work) has a much wider focus than is often considered, going beyond superannuation savings and age pension support to include other retirement savings outside super as well. Research team From The University of Melbourne Professor Kevin Davis Associate Professor Roger Wilkins Dr Carsten Murawski From Towers Watson John Burnett Nick Wilkinson Data and projection method The research utilises data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey to provide retirement projections based on the methodology of the retirement planner that Towers Watson built for ASIC s MoneySmart website. Our sample comprises 5,987, 6,829 and 8,083 persons between ages 25 and 64 in 2002, 2006 and 2010 respectively. 2
