12 a) City Tours of Lima Tour of the City of the Kings. Panoramic visit to the Huaca Pucllana in Miraflores, archaeological center that was active between the 5th and 8th centuries A.D. Proceed and enjoy a view of the Olivar of San Isidro, that stands out among the parks of the hemisphere and symbolizes the Viceregal and Republican tradition of this district, highlighted by its magnificent olive trees dating from Viceregal times, and also by Huallamarca archaeological center. Continue to the Historical Centre of Lima and see the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), Government Palace, City Hall, Cathedral, Archbishop s Palace, Santa Rosa de Lima s Sanctuary, Las Nazarenas Church and San Martin Square. You can also visit the San Francisco Monastery, a masterpiece of colonial architecture housing important colonial paintings, and their famous Catacombs. Another site to visit is China Town, a vivid expression of the blend of Peru and China manifested in architecture and food. Not far from there is the Parque de la Reserva, where the city of Lima built an immense and fantastic network of water fountains. 13 b) Callao and Palomino Islands Peru s foremost port, Callao has long enjoyed historical and commercial importance, having been founded in 1537, originally as a port of embarkation for merchandise to be shipped to Spain. Located 14 km from downtown Lima, Callao still features venerable wooden colonial mansions lined with long and elaborately carved balconies. Visitors can take in sights such as the Plaza Gálvez and Plaza Grau squares and the Iglesia Matriz church. At the end of Saenz Peña Avenue stands the Real Felipe fortress, a vast construction dating back to 1747, when it was built to defend the port from pirates such as Drake, who sacked the city in the sixteenth century. The Real Felipe also played an important role in Peru s war of independence. One can also visit Chucuito, a small fishermen s cove lined with Gothic and neo-renaissance houses, as well as typical wooden homes painted in bright colors nearby. The tour continues on through La Punta, a traditional district which forms part of Callao and which is ideal for walking and taking in the tangy sea breeze. This old quarter, once the home of Lima s aristocracy, features a superb oceanside promenade, pebble beaches and stately homes dating back to the early days of the Republic at the start of the nineteenth century, as well as others from the 1930s-50s. Out to sea lie the islands of El Camotal, San Lorenzo, El Frontón, Cavinzas and Palomino, which can be visited in tours arranged by the Callao Town Hall. Tours set out from the Plaza Grau square, near the Real Felipe. During the tour, visitors will take in islands such as El Camotal, rich in scallops and which according to history was linked to Callao until the 1746 earthquake. The boat then skirts San Lorenzo, Peru s largest island, where religious ceremonies were performed in pre-hispanic times. The island was later studied by Charles Darwin. To the north one can spot El Cabezo, an ideal beach for fishing, and the island of El Frontón, once a prison which housed the country s most dangerous criminals. The Cavinzas isles are a haven for sea birds, some of them migratory, and together with the Palomino isles form a set of islands which are a refuge for species such as sea lions. Price range: Regular service: USD USD c) Pachacamac Forty-five minutes south of Lima, off the Pan American Highway, sits the Pachacamac Pilgrimage Center. Built around 700 A.D. as a temple for the worship of the Sun God, Pachacamac, it housed an oracle that is believed to be one of the main pilgrimage centers in pre-columbian Peru. Pilgrims flocked here from far away to worship Pachacamac, who was believed to be the creator of the world and its creatures. The site includes palaces, plazas and temples that have been painstakingly restored. The on-site museum has a collection of local relics. Also, enjoy a fabulous Peruvian Paso horse show featuring a champion breed of show horse, world famous for its elegant gait and the purity of the blood line at Mamacona Ranch, whose guests will feel they step back in time to the Spanish Colony. 14 d) Ica, more adventures south of the capital A journey of about four hours takes you to the Ica Region and its perfect desert landscape with sand dunes. In this place you will find surprising activities, such as dune buggy racing and sandboarding. This region is the home of the Nazca Lines, mysterious designs that were etched onto the desert floor by an ancient civilization and can only be seen in their full splendor from an airplane. Ica is also synonymous of ecology, boasting two important natural refuges: the Paracas Natural Reserve and the Ballestas Islands. Take a trip on motorboat rides to check out the stars of Peruvian coastal wildlife, sea lions and Humboldt penguins. There are also plenty of vineyards in Ica where you can see how they make Peru s flagship spirit, Pisco, which is taking the world by storm because of its quality. 15 e) The magical beauty of Cusco The city of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, was placed on the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in There are Inca buildings waiting for you to discover them among its cobble-stoned streets, such as the Koricancha, one of the most impressive Inca buildings in Cusco: the glowing gilding of the interior walls illuminated what used to be the main temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun God. The Spanish built the church and Dominican convent on top of the original structure around 1534.The convent possesses an art gallery of valuable seventeenth and eighteenth century canvasses. In downtown Cusco you will also find Andean Baroque structures from the Colonial period, such as the Cathedral and the Company of Christ Church. In addition, you can visit the picturesque neighborhood of San Blas which is characterized by narrow, steep streets and beautiful Colonial houses, where the best artisans in the region have set up their workshops. This magical city also has an exciting nightlife with cafes, restaurants, and bars for all tastes. Just ten minutes away from the city, you will find the massive walls of the Sacsayhuamán fortress, built by the Incas out of large stones, some of which up to 120 tons. It might well have been a religious structure, but for its location and style, the Spanish and the historians believe it was a military construction. A few kilometers from there, you find the archeological sites of Qenko, Pukapukara, and Tambomachay, Inca buildings constructed completely out of stone. Once in Cusco, you can take a tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where you will find the towns of Pisac, Chinchero, and Ollantaytambo, where every Sunday, the farmers and businessmen gather to exchange their products in fairs. Artisans still make blankets and shawls in a traditional fashion; you can even watch them at their craft. Lastly, go tour the church at Andahuaylillas to check out its intricately painted walls and ceiling. From Cusco city or from Ollantaytambo, you can take the train to Machu Picchu. Another way of getting there is by following one of the Inca Trails, a spectacular network of pathways that snake their way among the snow-covered mountains, rivers, and overwhelming countryside. This is one of the best trekking routes in the world, since along its way you find remarkable archeological sites and areas rich in unique plant and animal species. The enigmatic complex of Machu Picchu is part of the Historic Sanctuary of the same name, which is also one of the few places in the Americas placed on both the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Lists by UNESCO. It is located high on top of a granite mountain and complements the exuberant nature that surrounds it, creating a one-of-a-kind place in the world. 16 f) Arequipa, the White City The city of Arequipa is called the White City because of the white volcanic stone, called Sillar, used in different buildings in the city. UNESCO even added the historic center to its World Heritage List in You can visit Mestizo-Baroque churches and Spanish Colony mansions. One of the more interesting landmarks is the Santa Catalina Convent, a Spanish city in miniature, complete with stone alleys, lovely patios, and plazas. One of the most extraordinary destinations is the Colca Canyon. It plunges to a depth of 3400 meters, nearly double that of the Grand Canyon, and condors fly over daily, a breathtaking sight for all to see. Dotting the mountains throughout the entire area are eye-catching agricultural terraces, built long before the Incas and where farmers today still cultivate quinoa, corn, barley, and wheat. Before the Spaniards arrived, the region was inhabited by the Collaguas and Cabanas. The Spanish Colonial churches in some towns, are extremely well preserved, and the locals dress in beautiful traditional outfits. 17 g) Moche Route (Northern Peru) Cao Museum The new Cao Museum, which opened in April 2009 in the northern region of Trujillo, marks the 2005 discovery of a pre-columbian tomb belonging to a Royal Lady that died at the age of 20. The tomb was discovered in a perfect state within a ceremonial complex to honor the burial of this royal member. Now visitors can marvel at the impressive conservation of this tomb and its artifacts. Huaca Rajada In 2007 and 2008 exciting discoveries of two tombs from the Moche Civilization was discovered by the prestigious archaeologist Walter Alva, who also found the Lord of Sipan, and Steve Bourget in Huaca Rajada, near the city of Chiclayo, capital of Lambayeque. The new discoveries were the remains of members of the Moche elite, buried over 1700 years ago, found in a wooden coffin and covered in flags with armor and shields of silver and copper. Royal Tombs of Sipan National Museum This museum is considered to be one of the best in Latin America, housing an impressive collection of artifacts discovered in the tomb of the great Warrior, Lord of Sipan, from the Moche Civilization. The modern architectural structure of the museum represents the shape of the adobe pyramids, under which the Lord Sipan was found. Included in the many artifacts are earrings, nose rings, necklaces and ceremonial sceptres. Archaeologist Walter Alva, director of the project was also the first to enter the tomb, one of the most important finds of the twentieth century. This museum is found in Lambayeque. Huaca of the Sun and of the Moon Located 500 meters apart from one another, Huaca del Sol and Huaca de la Luna (Temple of the Sun and Moon) are two of the most impressive Peruvian pyramids, built for ceremonial purposes by the Moche around 500 A.D. Huaca de la Luna is composed of six superimposed temples and large polychrome walls. The friezes are very prominent features of the temple and are surrounded by symbols of the Moche God of Life and Death, know as Ai-Apec. Many human sacrifices would have taken place in these temples to honor Ai-Apec. Chan Chan The ancient Chimu Kingdom ( A.D.) founded its capital by the banks of the Moche River in the region La Libertad and called it Chan Chan, which in the ancient Moche language means sun sun. 18 h) The Jungle, just around the corner Tambopata National Reserve - Madre de Dios region With its 274,690 hectares, Tambopata is one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet: it is home to an estimated 632 bird species, 1200 of butterfy species, 103 amphibian species, 180 fish species, 169 reptile species and 103 mammal species. Between May and October, rainfall decreasesand boas and caimans, primates, felines and prehistoric-looking insects fill the jungle where, in a single hectare, you can find 150 different types of trees. It is worth flying 30 minutes from Cusco, or even to navigate the Tambopata River for 6 or 9 days from Puno, and marvel at the famous collpas: places full of clay where crowds of macaws, parrots, and hawks come between 5:30 and 9:00 a.m. to eat and create a live festival of colors and sounds. There is no comparable show in the world. And this is just a sample of what can be discovered here. Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Loreto region 90 minutes away from the capital, the so-called forest of mirrors awaits you. Here the sky looks upon itself in the dark waters of the rivers. Visitors can venture into the green forest for days, sailing with surprise, as walking through a mirror: this is the largest floodplain forest of the Amazon. This is one of the most biologically rich areas on Earth, with 965 species of wild plants, 1025 vertebrates and 449 of birds that live in this forest. Closely observe the lives of white herons and tuyuyos, listen to howler monkeys singing in the distance.
