This provides the primary/secondary/tertiary behavior that is standard on most major operating systems. Also exposed explicit timeout and retries properties for use with the first-alive load-balancing algorithm, to allow users to further control the DNS behavior of the appliance. Also added the ability to explicitly sort the name server and search domain properties, and enforce that order internally with the first-alive load balancing algorithm. Previously, the list was resorted internally. DataPower has also announced the deprecation of non-standard UDP/TCP ports for the round-robin load-balancing algorithm, as well as the per-name-server max retries property in These features is removed in a subsequent release of the DataPower firmware. 381DataPowerDNSEnhancement.ppt Page 2 of 6

3 DNS Enhancements New features First-Alive Algorithm Default behavior in most operating systems Use primary server if available If primary is unavailable, use secondary If primary and secondary are unavailable, use tertiary Global Retries (applies to all name servers) Maximum # of retries on the request according to the load balancing algorithm Global Timeout (applies to all name servers) Number of seconds DP will wait before retrying the lookup 3 DNS Enhancements 2010 IBM Corporati on The new property Load Balancing Algorithm allows a user to select which behavior the appliance will perform when choosing a name server from the list. If first-alive is chosen, DataPower will attempt to use the primary (first) name server from the list to resolve the query. If the primary name server is unavailable, we will then retry the request with the secondary (second) name server. If both the primary and secondary name servers are unavailable, we will attempt to use the tertiary (third) name server from the list to resolve the query. If all of these attempts are unsuccessful, we will retry the request N number of times (each progressing through primary, secondary, tertiary) according to the value of the Retries property. DataPower utilize the Timeout property as the number of seconds to wait for a response from a name server before marking that name server as unavailable. The round-robin load balancing algorithm (default) retains the DNS behavior in previous versions of DataPower firmware, which was to randomly choose a candidate name server from the specified list and attempt to resolve the query. 381DataPowerDNSEnhancement.ppt Page 3 of 6

The retries property replaced by the global Retries property seen on slide three which enforces a consistent number of retries through the list of name servers when the first-alive load balancing algorithm is chosen. When these features are removed, the timeout and retries properties seen on slide three will be functional for both the first-alive and round-robin load balancing algorithms. 381DataPowerDNSEnhancement.ppt Page 4 of 6
