2 What is NBPTS Certification? An advanced teaching credential It complements, but does not replace, a state s teacher license It is valid for 10 years and can be renewed National Board Certification is achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do. National Board Certification is available nationwide for most prek 12 teachers. Considered the gold standard in accomplished teaching and excellence (PDE)
3 Mission The mission of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is to advance the quality of teaching and learning by: Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards Advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers

5 Research on NBPTS Reliable, valid studies have demonstrated a measurable impact on teacher performance and student learning, engagement and achievement Measurable impact on teacher retention and professional development (National Research Council) 92 percent of National Board candidates say the process has made them a better teacher

7 The Process Six months from application to completion hours of work Four (4) portfolio entries that feature teaching practice 3 are classroom-based (video recordings and examples of student work are required) 1 relates to accomplishments outside the classroom and how they impact student learning Scored by at least 12 trained teachers in the content area Six (6) constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge 30 minutes each, administered in computer-based testing centers Scored by at least 12 trained teachers in the content area Cost is $2,500 scholarships, state/federal aid are available
8 Support In PA PDE Established 4 Regional Centers for Teaching Excellence to provide support to teachers as they prepare portfolios IU 22 is served by East Stroudsburg University Support Includes: Graduate courses, workshop sessions, individual consultation by NBCTs Equipment needed to prepare portfolios Transmittal of paperwork to PDE for payment of 50% of the fee Payment of two retakes for any educator who is not successful Opportunity to earn up to 180 Act 48 hours and advancement toward Level II certification in a comparable area
