7 The team visited Ed Smith School in Syracuse on Nov. 12 as part of the NABC program Stay In To Win. Cuse Brings Stay In To Win Message To Ed Smith School The Syracuse men s basketball team visited local Ed Smith School and presented a Stay In To Win program to students on Nov. 12. The presentation was developed in conjunction with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). It connects college coaches and players with middle and high school students in an attempt to motivate and encourage the students. Coach Boeheim and his squad participated in the event. After the entire team introduced itself, fi ve players spoke to the students: Graduate student Trevor Cooney spoke regarding the importance of earning degree; Freshman Tyler Lydon talked about working hard to achieve goals; Senior DaJuan Coleman referenced being part of a successful team; Graduate student Michael Gbinije spoke about making good decisions; Freshman Malachi Richardson informed the audience about being a good student and athlete. The event wrapped up with a question-andanswer period. NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee Decision Statement from Kevin Quinn, Senior Vice President for Public Affairs November 25, 2015 Today, the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee issued its decision in response to Syracuse University s appeal of the sanctions imposed on the University on March 6, The University submitted its appeal on March 20, The appeal decision resulted in the reduction of a signifi cant penalty. The Infractions Appeals Committee ruled that the University will gain back one men s basketball scholarship per year over the next four years. This will result in a total reduction of 8 scholarships over 4 years (2 per year from through ), rather than 12. In addition, even before the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee issued its decision, the University won a signifi cant victory by achieving a $1.23 million reduction in the fi nancial penalty previously imposed. In formulating its appeal, the University discovered the NCAA Committee on Infractions had incorrectly penalized it by requiring the forfeiture of monies received from the 2013 NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament. The Committee on Infractions acknowledged the error and corrected its earlier decision by reducing the fi nancial penalty. The University is pleased with these two positive outcomes resulting from our appeal. We strongly believed the original scholarship reduction penalty was too severe when compared to other infraction cases. Also, the scholarship reduction penalty directly impacts current and future student-athletes and their academic and athletic opportunities. We remain disappointed in the decision to vacate a signifi cant amount of men s basketball wins, a decision that was upheld. Although the appellate panel did not grant every one of our requests, it recognized there was merit in our appeal. We simply sought to be judged according to the same standards as other institutions, and we did our best to achieve that goal. Regardless of today s outcome, our top priority is to give our student-athletes the best possible education and teach them how to achieve their highest potential in the classroom and on the playing fi elds. We look forward to a bright future for all of our student-athletes and teams. More information about the University s response to the March 2015 NCAA report can be found at syr.edu. Further information about the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee Decision may be found at NCAA.org. NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee Decision Statement from Kevin Quinn, Senior Vice President for Public Affairs December 3, 2015 Today, the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee issued its decision in response to Head Men s Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim s appeal of the sanction imposed on him on March 6, Coach Boeheim submitted his appeal on March 20, The Appeals Committee determined that the NCAA Committee on Infractions abused its discretion by directing the suspension be served during conference play, because Coach Boeheim was not directly involved in the underlying violations of the case. The Appeals Committee determined the nine-game suspension may apply to non-conference games and be served immediately. The University is pleased the Appeals Committee recognized that the initial sanction imposed on Coach Boeheim was too harsh. Nevertheless, we supported Coach Boeheim s argument made during his hearing that any nine game suspension would be too severe based on previous cases, and his lack of involvement in the underlying conduct, which the Appeals Committee recognized. As Chancellor Syverud said in March, Coach Boeheim has been a mainstay at Syracuse University for more than one-third of our 144-year history. As we now move forward as a University, we join Coach Boeheim in his continued focus on ensuring our student-athletes receive the best possible education and achieve their highest potential in the classroom and on the court. Further information about the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee Decision may be found at NCAA.org. NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee Decision Statement from Coach James A. Boeheim December 3, 2015 Today, the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee rightfully determined that the NCAA Committee on Infractions abused its discretion in imposing a nine conference-game suspension based upon my alleged violation of the Head Coach Responsibility Bylaw. The NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee agreed that the NCAA Committee on Infractions ignored the fact that I had no involvement in any of the underlying violations in this case, and that I did not acquiesce in any of those underlying violations, in imposing its unprecedented suspension. The NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee also agreed that this case was in sharp contrast to cases where head coaches were directly involved in a number of underlying violations, including unethical conduct violations, recruiting violations, and violations of the NCAA legislation regarding extra benefi ts. At the same time, however, the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee decided to immediately impose a nine-game suspension, which is longer than any of the suspensions imposed in those cases. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed with the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee s decision, and in particular, the NCAA Infractions Appeals Committee giving us only two days to make this transition, when the appeal was argued weeks ago. However, I have full faith in the ability of Coach Hopkins, my staff, and our seniors to lead the Men s Basketball Program through this diffi cult time, and I look forward to returning to the bench on January 9 against the University of North Carolina. I am considering my options moving forward and will have no further comment regarding this matter at this time.
