There has long been important scholarship from a diverse array of researchers on this subject, but this session has a specific focus of considering how globalization shapes methodological choices. The objective will be to learn how empirical, methodological approaches compare and contrast between (and within) particular regions and nations in both the Global North and Global South (given existing historical, cultural, political and economic differences), and to what degree researchers engage in methodological borrowing. The roundtable will also focus on regulatory differences that influence the availability and importance of particular sources and kinds of information that researchers have at their disposal when conducting empirical inquiry. In his book, Wibren van der Burg develops a robust theory of law that can deal with these challenges. This theory of legal interactionism, inspired by the work of Lon Fuller and Philip Selznick, also helps us to understand apparent anomalies of modern law, such as international law, the law of the European Convention on Human Rights and horizontal interactive legislation. Its methodological pluralism and inclusive non-dogmatic concept of law will be especially helpful for interdisciplinary socio-legal research because it facilitates conversations across and within disciplines. A special focus is on the dynamic intertwinement of law and morality, especially in newly emerging fields of law dealing with bioethics and biotechnology. Scheduled presentations will examine the impact of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on persons living with disability; the protection of persons living with Albinism as promised under the Convention on Rights of Persons with Disability and-the education scheme of persons with disabilities will also be examined. Final the panel will investigate a globalized concept of legal education as a means of ensuring that the pathos of the law is achieved in the global south. The panel will be organised in a round-table format with a robust question and answer session that is expected to elicit information on the experiences from the Global North and what lessons the Global South can garner in ensuring that the pathos of the law is realised. Such laws raise important questions of transnational justice, healthcare financing, and selfhood. Adding to recent scholarship about biobanks and markets in sociology, anthropology, economics and legal scholarship, Banking on the Body: The Market in Blood, Sperm and Milk in Modern America (Harvard University Press, 2014) provides a historical perspective by tracing the origins of the first body products, human breast milk, blood, and sperm in law, medicine and society. Grounded in primary source research and focusing on the 20th century United States, the book examines the doctors, patients, and litigants who taught Americans to think about their bodies as a source of medical technologies, who bought and sold body parts, and who eventually developed the gift of life approach that dominates the law of body product exchange today. Informed by commodification scholarship and property theory, and attentive to the issues of gender, race and class that have shaped body product exchange, the book argues that the metaphor of the bank with its equation of body products and money profoundly influenced this history in unanticipated and harmful ways, contributing to current injustices in body product allocation. They no longer rely solely on the hard copy law reports to communicate the outcomes of cases. And as to their role generally they can no longer necessarily look to specialist legal reporters to explain their functions, how they work, and how their judges are appointed. In the cacophony of the modern media market they must innovate to get clear and accurate messages out. Those innovations have included setting up dedicated communications operations, the use of websites and social media such as twitter, and the use of their justices as public ambassadors, giving interviews and being filmed for documentaries about their lives on and off the bench. While no court would want to be caught spinning lines, a familiar function of executive agencies communications operations, they must now be prepared to interact with the media. Further, in addition to speaking, courts also listen, using the media to take information in which may then play some role in their work. This roundtable will examine these themes from comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, with participants from both academic and practitioner backgrounds. In 10 states, health expenditures grew by 90% or more. Since 2009, spending growth slowed to 10%. Several precipitating factors are currently being debated, including an aging prison population and legal rulings mandating prison healthcare. The case of treaties, conventions and international organizations that constitute the transnational legal field of nuclear nonproliferation is a case in point. On the one hand, the establishment of a strongly legalized regime centered around the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been hailed as an exceptional accomplishment for international law. Indeed, its creation and 18

On the other hand, some non-aligned nations like India and Pakistan have consistently criticized the regime for including many double (if not triple) standards, which, overall, only crystalized the world s inequalities of development into a global nuclear apartheid. This Author-Meets-Reader session will directly speak to the theme of the conference by focusing on the case of international law development in the field of nuclear nonproliferation. The book under scrutiny focuses on the role of Western (as well as some non-western) diplomats, statesmen, and specialists of international law in successive waves of negotiation of nuclear nonproliferation legal arrangements from the mid-1940s to the most recent era. It brings a fresh law and society perspective to a field traditionally left to international security and international relations (IR) studies. At the same time, it also provides new sociological theoretical insights on cycles of transnational law reform that can help law and society students explain processes of regime harmonization, which result in the elimination of double standards and legal inequalities. It does so by engaging in a constructive dialogue between various field theoretic traditions, thereby highlighting how the interplay of domestic and international legal processes, inter-generational and jurisdictional conflicts, forms of cultural capital and constructed ignorance, combine to influence cycles of transnational legal reform. In addition, the analysis of the nuclear nonproliferation regime presents a particularly interesting case for the study of transnational legal ordering. Past law and society scholars have analyzed how legal change in general, and regime harmonization in particular, can be affected by many factors including whether legal rules are transparent or ambiguous. Compared with other fields, nuclear nonproliferation presents a new angle, as in order to make sense of nuclear arrangements, nonproliferation exerts and policymakers often privileged another set of practices which form what the author calls opacity (rather than ambiguity or transparency). Hence, the book examines the question of how treaty harmonization can take place when legal commitments remain opaque. This theoretical insight can be of great interest to many law and society scholars who may find other cases of opaque legal arrangements in other fields of international law (trade and development, human rights and humanitarianism, etc.).
